Not a soccer expert by any means, but the refs seem to influence games in this sport way, way more than other sports. The importance of one goal is so much greater than in other sports making comparisons to other sports just doesn't cut it IMO.

That being said there have been so many amazing games. The drama in these games is top notch, so much fun to watch. Will be bummed when it is over.

Probably won't be watching much soccer on TV, if any really, until the next cup. But this has been a great couple weeks.

Yeah that wasn't a flop though, just a bad call. My point is Americans are always talking about the flopping and here it may have decided a World Cup game. It was obviously close and a foul could have been called, but the perceived dive and then the call in the 93rd minute are a tough pill to swallow.

I had no rooting interest, the result of the game meant nothing to me.

Robben (who I hate) made sure the ref called the foul, but Marquez stepped on his foot and kept him from going past. Stone cold penalty. The flailing arms just helped convince the ref of what had already happened.

I have no problem with there being a penalty there (flopping aside) my concern is why it leads to a penalty kick. Id think a corner kick or something would be more appropriate for a non shooting foul. I get that those are just the rules though.

Yeah not like in baseball where the umpire's judgement NEVER influences the game.

There is obviously influence in every sport but, due to the low scoring nature of soccer each individual call is SO much more influential in soccer.

A bad foul call in basketball that gives a team 2 free points in a game where there are going to be 200 total points scored is a lot different than a bad call in soccer that gives or takes away a goal in a game where 1-3 total goals may be scored. A bad PK call in soccer would be like a ref calling a bad foul in basketball that lets the player shoot a free throw worth 40 points.

It's just the nature of the game so there's not much that can be done about it. It's nice that they're taking some steps like the GPS in the ball (why American football doesn't do this is beyond me) but it's interesting that soccer is one of the last sports to adopt instant replay, especially for something like offsides that has led to several hugely important bad calls in this World Cup alone.

Taking some action against flopping (penalizing players after the fact for obvious flops) would be helpful too, but I doubt that will ever happen as most true soccer fans seem to semi-embrace it and rush to its defense at every turn despite claiming that they dislike it ahead of time.

He got clipped in the box by a defender that stuck his leg in and missed the ball.It's a soft penalty because the contact was minimal and Robben likely wasn't going to go down from it.

Robben had been clipped a few times and there was the missed call in the first half so in the grand scheme of the game I think it was the right call. It's certainly debatable though.

I don't think you'd find many soccer fans who wouldn't support video review and punishment for divers. No one likes it.
