I feel vindicated by the article about that Brazil game. Made me feel a lot better to see what I felt articulated perfectly. I felt that Brazil was first to set the tone of cynical aggression - and was first to then set the tone of cynical flopping.

Fact someone else saw all of this, was able to point out how the flow is cumulative and leads to a progression of events makes me feel hopeful.

What doesn't make me feel hopeful are those that cannot even entertain or see that all of this so blatantly happened - and excuse it.

As the journalist so aptly pointed out, the ref's inability to police and enforce a modicum of justice contributed not only to an ugly match lacking in fair play, but quite possibly in serious injury.

I won't speak for others, but THAT is the problem I personally had with the sport - not the sport itself.

And the fact you so stubbornly glaze all of this over, well. That informs how I value your opinion.

Yet the article says nothing to validate your silly diving claims or insulting injured players. Get over yourself.

Watching this Holland CR game makes think of US qualifying games that are played away from the US in the first round of WC qualifying. The US is clearly the better team and yet the games are always way too close for comfort.

I still get upset thinking just how close the US came to not even making it out of the first round of qualifying.

The more I over-analyze this, the more brilliant a move it becomes. Confidence is a non-trivial factor in taking and stopping penalties. By bringing him on especially for the kicks, LVG is boosting Krul's confidence more than any pep talk would. Van Gaal also transfers some of the pressure squarely onto is own shoulders. If Krul failed, the manager would the lion's share of the blame, not the goalkeeper (unless one of the NED takers skied their shot over the bar.

Watching this Holland CR game makes think of US qualifying games that are played away from the US in the first round of WC qualifying. The US is clearly the better team and yet the games are always way too close for comfort.

I still get upset thinking just how close the US came to not even making it out of the first round of qualifying.

I just worry about the next qualifying cycle - Costa Rica may not have long-term staying power, but they should be good for the next few years. 3 "locks" for 3.5 spots does not leave a lot of wiggle room.
