Your friends are uneducated in this matter. Del Rio would be an unbelievably terrific hire.Talked to some USC friends of mine today: they are NOT enthusiastic about Jack Del Rio. They think he sucked with the Jaguars.
Yeah, but he left once already...it was a mess. There are not many coaches who return to teams, so we're dealing with a very unique situation here. Riley did not like coaching in the NFL. I don't think he'd like USC. Where he is at is where he is comfortable. He did better there than the guys who have replaced him....Talked to some USC friends of mine today: they are NOT enthusiastic about Jack Del Rio. They think he sucked with the Jaguars.
And he's a good guy who is perfect to mold young men, which is exactly what that program needs. He did better there than the guys who have replaced him....Talked to some USC friends of mine today: they are NOT enthusiastic about Jack Del Rio. They think he sucked with the Jaguars.
Not all....that's where Kiffin's massive mismanagement comes in. He loaded up on JUCO signees prior to 2012, so he was sacrificing the long term for 1 shot. Remember Silas Redd? There's another spot gone, which many pointed out when he transferred. All this for the bush stuff?I've read it will be 2019 by the time USC has a full roster again.
Not really.Question for Gump and any other Alabama fans: The Los Angeles Times this morning compared Kiffin's tenure at USC to Mike Shula at Alabama- a caretaker coach during sanction years, fooling people with a 10-2 record one year, then ripped apart by impatient fans because he just can't win with all the restrictions imposed. Is this an accurate analogy?
I've compared them many times on this board....I think that comparison was the straw that broke the camels back in a debate I was having with Joe...he couldn't take it anymore after I said that Kiffin had to prove himself some just to get to Shula's level.Question for Gump and any other Alabama fans: The Los Angeles Times this morning compared Kiffin's tenure at USC to Mike Shula at Alabama- a caretaker coach during sanction years, fooling people with a 10-2 record one year, then ripped apart by impatient fans because he just can't win with all the restrictions imposed. September is the new November when it comes to coach firings.Dickie Dunn said:Pasqualoni canned at UConn, which is off to an 0-4 start including a loss to Towson.
Sort of. Garrett was AD, but he had been neutered by the department by that point. Southern Cal had a hiring committee for the FB job and Haden was on it. Haden wasn't the one that offered Kiffin the job, but he was definitely part of the group that told Garrett to hire him.Mike Garrett hired Kiffin.Kiffy also made decisions that delayed the sanctions and effects so he could have 1 successful season. He was all in for a quick win, probably hoping to get a new contract because of it.And I've posted many times that Kiffins recruiting seems to be smoke and mirrors, and that he wasnt building a successful foundation.this goes back to my earlier comments about when to take jobs. No matter how good the job is, timing in college football is extremely important. I heard them say they only had 56 scholarship players last night. That's a massive reduction vs other schools and I think they have one more year of sanctions before they can start building back up. No matter how fast or well you build, you won't have experienced depth for quite a while and that's critical.Kiffin is a ####### dooshbag and he was also an idiot for taking the job when he did. USC is just not set up for success just yet. I wouldn't want the USC job now. The next guy is also likely to get fired. And it can be a career killer to get fired from a big job like that. A lot of that list are young up and comers who may never get another big chance if they fail at this one. Money and arrogance make the world go round though so I'm sure they'll have no shortage of candidates. The top half seems pretty realistic. Whoever takes it will be in for a rough 2 year start....thanks to Kiffy. Which makes me think the bottom half wouldn't take it.Jack Del Rio- he wants the job badly.Pat FitzgeraldWho are the USC candidates?
James Franklin
Greg Roman (offensive coordinator, 49ers)
Tim DeRuyter (Fresno State)
Here are some names I also hear, but which I doubt are serious:
Bobby Petrino
Jeff Fisher
Mike Reilly
Steve Sarkesian
Chris Petersen
Jeff Fisher
Haden deserves criticism for hiring him to get thru this tough time and letting him make the decisions he did.
I'm not sure about that. They are willing to pay $6M+ for the head coach. Unlike Kiffin, any coach they hire this year is not going to be blind to the sanctions. It's going to be a huge topic of conversation for any coach coming in. That coach is going to want assurances that he has time to rebuild the roster in terms of numbers.this goes back to my earlier comments about when to take jobs. I don't think that's accurate. The 2014 class is the last reduced class. Even if they had no players on the current roster, they'd have the full 85, assuming they sign full classes and have no attrition, by 2018.I've read it will be 2019 by the time USC has a full roster again.
I agree completely. Plus, he's already turned them down once (and then they ended up with Carroll).General Malaise said:I would be absolutely blown away - SHOCKED! - if Riley took that job. This is all very true, and I agree that he won't go there, but Riley's already been a coach at Southern Cal, so he knows what it's like there. He was their OC/QB coach for four years in the mid 90s.General Malaise said:Yeah, but he left once already...it was a mess. You missed the post where I expanded some....but '11 was the load up class of 32...which will be cycling out. The 2010 class of 20 will be leaving. So essentially they are just replacing kids this year, then will have to load up just to replace all the losses next year.I don't think that's accurate. The 2014 class is the last reduced class. Even if they had no players on the current roster, they'd have the full 85, assuming they sign full classes and have no attrition, by 2018.I've read it will be 2019 by the time USC has a full roster again.
But, yeah, the reductions will be felt at least through 2017, in terms of depth.

So that means after the 2015 signing class, they are still where they are now. So then gaining 10 per year (25 max minus 15 limit under sanctions)....gets them full in 3 years following that.
That's the math I saw...of course you need a degree in nuclear engineering to understand recruiting...so I claim none it.
I seriously doubt USC drops $6m on their next coach. People throw wild numbers out but Kiffin was only making $2.4m. The very top coaches make $5m and have won national titles.I'm not sure about that. They are willing to pay $6M+ for the head coach. Unlike Kiffin, any coach they hire this year is not going to be blind to the sanctions. It's going to be a huge topic of conversation for any coach coming in. This is the last year of the scholarship reductions. However, because Kiffin didn't sign the full allotment of 15 last year, they can give 19 out this year, provided they find 4 early entrees.
They aren't going to be good for the next year or two, but do they have elite talent at most of the skill positions, and with good coaching and a little luck with injuries, they could be a 3-5 loss team for the next two years. They don't have any depth, though.
Pat Haden isn't an idiot and recognizes situation. If they look well-coached, the next coach is going to get a longer leash than normal to get them turned around.
He'd definitely be on the list of guys I'd call right off the bat to see if they were happy but I don't really think there is much shot there. He already makes a lot of money and I think his aspirations are the NFL. Rebuilding a program isn't going to make that happen faster.I would call Sumlin. See if he would be interested.
I didn't say they will, but that's the number I've heard from a few people. They are willing to pay that much to get the right guy. They aren't going to pay $6M to just anyone they hire. Again, I'm not saying they will end up paying that much, but they will try to throw a bunch of money at an elite guy to get him to come.I seriously doubt USC drops $6m on their next coach. Haden isn't an idiot. He isn't going to go throw money at an unproven guy and pay him more than Saban, Miles, Meyer. And he's not going to get into a bidding war with UA or LSU or OSU. I think fans love to throw out names but most just aren't that realistic even for the best jobs. USC is no different from ND or Bama or Texas or Michigan or Florida or Ohio State. It's a major. But each time those opened recently they haven't poached from another big school. Other than Saban, none were even stretch pulls where there was any chance for a money fight and he just wanted out of the NFL.
Unless they find someone that is just unhappy (Bret Beliema part deux), it's most likely going to be a midmajor or a guy with USC ties that will come in at a hometown discount.
Yeah, I wouldn't say you are a jackass but in 2011 Michigan, Miami and Florida all had openings. In 2012 Ohio State, Penn State, UCLA and Texas A&M all did. It happens more often than you'd think. Last year was "mild" with only Wisconsin, Arkansas, and Tennessee.I didn't say they will, but that's the number I've heard from a few people. They are willing to pay that much to get the right guy. They aren't going to pay $6M to just anyone they hire. Again, I'm not saying they will end up paying that much, but they will try to throw a bunch of money at an elite guy to get him to come.
And, with the Texas job probably opening up (and possibly Nebraska), unless they hire a coach before the end of the season, Southern Cal will have competition for a coach, which could drive salaries up. When is the last time that 2 of the top 2-5 coaching jobs were open at the same time (I haven't looked it up, so I really hope it wasn't recently and I look like a jackass here)?
And, I think your Kiffin point is actually in my favor. He wasn't exactly coveted, yet Southern Cal made him the highest paid coach in the Pac-12. I don't know if it's accurate, but in addition to Kiffin, his dad was making well over $1M a year and Ed Ogeron, their DL coach, is making $1M per year.

Gruden would be awesome for the comedic value. Dude wouldn't have the patience for HS/college kids. No chance that would work. I can't see Sark wanting to come back, nor being asked to come back. If I'm a Trojan fan, I'm dying for Sumlin, but that's not happening. As others said, he's NFL bound, not rebuilding bound. Next would be Chris Peterson. He has had a ton of chances to leave BSU, but hasn't, but maybe now the time is right since BSU has already peaked? Kirby Smart would be a sexy hire too as long as he's coupled w/ a strong OC.
In the end, while I don't think they will, I hope for more fail down @ SC![]()
I was in South Bend Saturday. Great game. OU did exactly what it needed to do getting out of the gate fast. And every time ND started to get something going OU was able to take the momentum back. The OU fan presence was also incredible. Red all around the stadium.
The campus is great. Got to visit the Golden Dome, Touchdown Jesus, the Grotto and the Basilica. Got to see the Irish Guard getting hazed. The Notre Dame fans were great too. They couldn't believe how many OU fans showed up.
One of the best game days I've experienced.![]()
