I had read this, but I'm struggling to see the benefit of anyone going over there without ND as the opponent.

Croke Park (pronounced "crow") to host Penn State - Central Florida

The hook here is that both HCs are Irish. Penn State is giving up a home game - and a boat load of seats (from 108k to 69k). But, this is something that BOB has wanted since we've been bowl banned.

Because of the ban? I just don't get the economics behind it. That's all. Is there a substantial PSU following in Ireland? Genuine question, I don't know.

In this case, it's not about the money. Since PSU can't go bowling or play for the B1G title, BOB wants something for the guys to work toward/look forward to. Yeah, it sucks for this year's juniors/seniors, but they've bowled before. This is about this year's sophmores who will never have a chance. They would be the only ones who won't get a chance otherwise. Having a game in Ireland takes the place of a bowl.

Considering where PSU's been bowling the last couple of years, Ireland > Dallas, TX.

Johnny Football kicked out of the Manning Passing Academy.

I understand why people defended him when he started getting criticism this offseason, but at this point I think it's obvious that the young man isn't doing a great job handling his success.

So he went home 'sick' after missing meetings....which he is supposed to be a mentor in....and was then spotted out that night in College Station.

"In fairness, there is the possibility that Manziel was legitimately sick. The immune system can be weakened by heavy drinking." - Seth Payne

Peter King thought enough about this to make it his lead story in MMQB after a 4-week vacation from writing this weekly column. Apparently this kid really blew it by blowing off the Mannings in the manner he blew them off. Said the comparisons to Russell Wilson or Drew Brees are ludicrous as those two are Eagle Scouts. Said a better comparison might be Ryan Leaf. Ouch.

"We're trying to figure out why the athletic director of Notre Dame is equal to all of the conference commissioners and no one had a good answer except that's the way it's always been done," Spurrier said.

"All 14 of our head coaches thought that Notre Dame should join the ACC to play football like all the rest of us," he said. "Notre Damers can get mad at me and us coaches for saying that … but from the rest of us that are in conferences we say, 'Why aren't they in a conference?' It's hard to figure out why."

It now appears as the though the selection committee will consist of one athletic director from each of the five power conferences, former coaches and players and possibly former media members.

Wonder how many people end up on the committee. I'm very encouraged by the final comments:

While current polls won’t be used in the process, there is concern among some in the working CFP group that failing to release a weekly ranking will allow the Associated Press and coaches polls – two polls that had defined the game for decades – to direct the narrative and therefore minimize the CFP poll.

But I'm not sure how it would minimize the committee. It doesn't matter how frequently they release a poll compared to the others. What they say goes. I think most would be fine with letting the CFP poll coming out beginning - mid October and going weekly from there.

For the most part those teams won't be in the Top 4 anyway. Once it gets expanded to 8 or 16, then that debate starts.

With a four team playoff they sent the message that the non-BCS schools meant little to them.

it was all about money anyway. The small schools don't generate the money except when they are considered to be crashing the party (America loves an underdog). If they got a say, and it became normal for smaller schools to participate, then they really generate little income. CBS isn't paying $1b annually because they get good ratings for the Creighton/Cincinnatti first round matchup no matter how good the game is. But when a WSU or Butler makes a shocking trip to the final four, they generate a ton of interest. Its rarity is part of what makes it exciting.

I agree Manziel will be fine...but the team could underperform.

can't decide if they are going to be the 70's Oakland Athletics or what. I have a lot of respect for Sumlin but he seems to be allowing them to get way too far off the leash. Sometimes that can work but sometimes it leads to factions and if things go south, they really go south.

We're playing them the first game of the year and I don't expect anything other than total destruction. We just don't have the athletes to compete. But I'm not sure they can live up to the hype this year because it's pretty unbelievable. Manziel may be the most over exposed athlete in history at this point. I enjoy watching him play, but if I never see another story about him, I'd be pretty happy.

Well, the scenario I thought of is some team like Houston going through the regular season undefeated even though their SOS is nothing to write home about. There could be pressure (applied through polls) to include them in the NCC.

But at least part of the reason they have all the titles is because at the end of the year their best teams have more wins than most others. I just have a simple proposal: if you beat a team in a lower division, or an FBS team ranked at least 50 teams below yours, that victory shouldn't count toward BCS. It should be treated as a bye.

New Mexico St. is an FBS school and it's a lot more palatable to have them on the schedule when you also play Nevada and @Nebraska in the other two OOC games.

It wouldn't fit on UCLA's schedule. The Pac-12 plays 9 regular season conference games compared to the SEC's 8.

Florida wouldn't do it anyway. They don't leave the state unless the SEC forces them to.

Maybe you'd rather switch the whole thing then?

There are a couple problems with this. UCLA doesn't play FCS teams. Florida doesn't leave Florida.

But, other than that, sure. UCLA's schedule is very difficult this year. It would be nice to have a bye at the end of November prior to a big game.

Well, as usual the SEC teams have their annual chicken#### non-conference schedule of lower division opponents. Let's see who's on tap this year:

Alabama: Georgia State, Chattanooga

Florida: Toledo, Georgia Southern

LSU: Furman (LSU decided this year it was so shameful to play these lower division teams that they only scheduled one- instead, they face powerhouses like Kent State and UAB.)

What on earth has Miami done in the last few years to garner that sort of treatment? FSU? Okay...but Miami? They ain't what they used to be...

Well they were tied for the division in the ####ty ACC. But I'd put money on them beating a team like Nevada easily.

I'd say the Colin Kapernick era Wolf Pack would have beaten any iteration of the Randy Shannon Hurricanes, but as far as this year, I'd say you're probably correct.
