I think most people assumed it'd eventually get to this. With five power conferences and only 4 teams making it, at least one conference was always going to be left out.
The trick becomes how do you do this? My initial guess would be that they take the conference champs, highest ranking nonP5 team (if ranked above a conference champ) and two/three at-large teams.
The biggest complaint I have is expanding things really starts to open the door for questions about teams that possibly shouldn't have playoff complaints. Right now people talk about MSU, Baylor, TCU, and Ohio State on the bubble. In that scenario, you're talking more about Ole Miss, Georgia, and UCLA. I, personally, prefer the former. If you lose at all, you run the risk of not getting in.
I'd be curious to others' thoughts on a six team playoff? Imagine P5 conference champs and one at-large. Give the top two seeds a bye during the conference title weekend. Play 3-6, 4-5 at the higher ranked site that weekend and have the final four play as they do with the current playoff configuration.
