*Official 2016 Philadelphia Eagles* - The year of Change (1 Viewer)

I also have to take back my slight to the "intelligent fans"--Doug stated he has called plays for the 2nd half of every game since their Pittsburgh game
The following from PFT makes no sense when you're down 2 scores late.

Doug Pederson hasn’t coached a game for the Eagles yet, but he still faced questions about play calling in his first press conference since being hired as the team’s head coach.

Pederson said that he would call the offensive plays for the Eagles next season and said that he gained experience doing it during the second halves of games with the Chiefs dating back to a November win over the Steelers. That includes last Saturday’s loss to the Patriots, which saw the Chiefs take more than five minutes off the clock before scoring a touchdown that cut the New England lead to 27-20.

That clock management, particularly the minute-plus that burned away after the Chiefs got to the 1-yard-line, has come under criticism and Pederson said Tuesday that the team wanted to keep Tom Brady and the New England offense off the field by way of explanation. They succeeded at doing that, although the result wound up being a bad one all the same.

I can say one thing for sure...Chip smashes him in an interview lol

They started this search during the season "just in case"--Chip getting that power REALLY pissed off Lurie

So you want to keep the other team's QB off the field even though you're down another score?!? I think he's covering for Reid but dude you have to come up with a better response. He better tighten up his act because this media is going to roast him if he doesn't. Those clowns probably left there licking their chops.

It makes no sense to use that as an explanation. Wouldn't it be better to score the first TD as early as possible regardless of whether you want to give the ball back to Brady? Even if there is 3-4 minutes left (instead of 1), there is nothing that prevents them from still kicking the onsides kick. Only if they miss, they will actually have some time in the rare instance that they do stop Brady.

Like the attacking style, Fletcher Cox is gonna be an animal.
We need to get him locked up before this season starts. Guy is gonna get 10 sacks and command an enormous contract after that.

The second Schwartz signed I think that locking him up may have been impossible. He's already looking at close to 100 million IMO

Money talks though. I'm sure if we throw a big contract at him he'll take it. We may have no shot to sign him after this season if he wants to leave. Maybe we can franchise Sam this year and Cox next year :P

Well that settles that finally.
I must have missed it, or maybe it wasn't on, but people on Twitter said he spoke for around 10 minutes and they seemed shocked at how humble he came off. He didn't get into detail about Gamble but mentioned something like he has to be better at working with people.

Hope the rest of our coaches echo what Schwartz said today:

"Our job as coaches is to put everyone in position that they can be best used. You have to be humble enough from a professional standpoint that you can accept that. The last thing you want to do as a coach is force-feed a scheme on a set of players."

Jim Schwartz on what he aims to do, and on Eagles' personnel:

"If you can generate rush without blitzing, it really gives you an advantage as a playcaller. Theres nothing worse, as a defensive playcaller, than knowing you have to blitz to get pressure on the quarterback Ive never labeled myself a Wide 9 guy Theres 32 teams in the league that line up in a Wide 9 at some time or another. Id say if you want to label a defensive style or front there, it would be attack. Its not a read-and-react system. Its not a lateral, line of scrimmage we want to attack, we want to knock back, we want to put pressure on the quarterback, we want to create negative plays.

"I like this group (for that). Again, thats very attractive. Fletcher Cox. I know hes a free agent, but Cedric Thornton. Vinny Curry, (also a) free agent. Connor Barwin. Those are guys that can do that. Brandon Graham, I had him at the Senior Bowl, man; he was my MVP. I think we helped him get drafted (13th overall) in the first round. He might owe me a little bit of that signing bonus. I think he had three or four sacks in that game."

Ugh.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports the Rams have asked the Eagles permission to interview Pat Shurmur for their opening at offensive coordinator.

EDT: Wonder if we can trade Bradford to St. Louis for Foles + a 1st Rounder?

Kidding of course... but hopefully he doesn't follow him back there if we don't franchise him.

I'm beginning to begrudgingly accept the idea that Sam isn't coming back. Since he's going to have to learn a new system anyway, he can probably find a more appealing situation. Besides, this front office seems set on re-living the Andy Reid days. With Pederson now in the fold, I figure they will look to draft a QB in the first round. Then sign a veteran "bridge QB", much like Pederson was so many years ago. Chase Daniel? Whatever. Not like they were going to be Super Bowl contenders next year anyway.

Maybe they can pull off a tag-and-trade and get a decent pick in return.

I don't know. i am not anti-Sam, but i think it makes a ton of sense to lock up a guy like Cox long-term, and use some good money to add some talent to the OL (you got Lane Johnson, and really that is possibly it. Hopefully Kelce and Peters can bounce back, but still makes a lot of sense to spend some free agent money on a veteran OL or 2. A legit guard would be nice). Bringing back Sam without adding a few pieces to that OL is kind of waiting for an issue to come up again. I would be ok taking a step back to take a few steps forward in 2 years. Give the defense a year to learn the new defense and Shwartz system and hopefully have the defense be the strength of the team next year.

I mean Pederson just spent 3 years with Alex Smith so i don't think he feels that a top QB is the most important piece. Get some OL to block for Murray, Mathews and Sproles and bring in a game manager for this upcoming year. I don't know, but i like the idea of that. if Sam is out looking for big money, and looking at his agent it certainly seems that way, i think the worst decision would be to put long term money into him.

If Sam leaves, that is a nice compensatory pick too, right?

Anyway, i came on because i liked this little tidbit i saw today on rotoworld:

Bob Bicknell came over from the Eagles to fill the same WRs coach role on 49ers.

How the heck do you lead the league in drops, and you get picked up again. Maybe Chip is either too loyal for his own good, or just pretty bad at picking asst. coaches

I just don't think he has the connections since he's relatively new to the NFL and his style is so unique it alienates a decent amount of the traditional coaches. When he first came here I think something like 3/4 of his coaches were first or second year coaches.

Someone mentioned tag and trade. I would think they could at least get back their investment of a 2 under that scenario.

I could see this as the play. Tag him, see if you like a QB that's there in the 1st and if you get him you try to work a deal for Sam.

I like Sam but can also picture how frustrating it will be if we pay him big money and he goes back to his fragile self.

Probably the best we could hope for. If it was Denver's 2nd, I'd be OK with that.
Osweiler and their 2? Sign Daniel, draft Wentz. Let Osweiler and Daniel battle for the start. Throw Bradford $ at OL. Fantasy I know but I wouldn't mind something like it at all. I don't trust Bradford's ability to stay healthy.

I'd like to see them get Wentz in the draft. Want a young QB to build around.
What's his story, besides real small school? Must be impressive as you don't see many come out of South Dakota State I think it is? Did see a mock with him going to Cowboys.

I haven't but the Dallas staff will be coaching him at the Senior Bowl FWIW. Goff is the one getting all the love now but Wentz has a decent shot at being the first QB taken IMO

$20 million is cheap to see if Bradford continues to improve. Franchise him, draft Oline and let Schwartz fire up the D. We could win 11 or 12. If Bradford works sign him, if not get your guy next year. There's always a QB out there that can manage a QB friendly wco.

Looks like a pretty crazy story, not just small school but looks like he only played his last 2 years and stats don't blow you away? Apparently only 1 year of QB in HS and has really developed in college? Kind of scary though I think.

Assume they franchise Bradford, what do you think of the possibility of him simply holding out until he gets a trade or new deal? Honestly, what is his incentive to play under the franchise tag? I'm sure his camp is considering, maybe even threatening, to do so.

His incentive to play is his second half of 2015. And the fact that his reputation is that of being too brittle. If he's confident that he can put together a 16 game season with a 95 QB rating, he's looking at $100 million dollars.

Eagles will hire former Browns OC John DeFilippo as QB coach
FWIW this guy actually got some interviews for HC jobs.
hmm, interesting choice. Guy must be ecstatic to get out of Cle and having to work with that QB mess. i do wonder what that means for Bradford. i would suggest it isn't good
@MikeGarafolo DeFilippo interviewed for Niners HC, was in mix for Rams OC. Carson Palmer said he'll be a HC someday. Big hire for Pederson.

yeah, considering who Pederson has brought in so far, it must say a lot that the guy was liked and people want to work with him

Well first things first. He comes out of NORTH Dakota State. Winners of the last 5 FCS championships. I'm an alumni so just need to make that known. :)

Wentz Is from Bismarck ND and started last year and this year. He had a wrist injury that made him miss 8 games this year. In that time the Bison never lost so there was no hurry to bring him back. He started the championship game and looked good. I was able to see that game and others in person. I've also talked with him a couple times and he is just a great kid.

He has great size, ran a pro offense and graduated with a 4.0. No doubt he played lesser competition in college and I'm a little surprised to hear he might be the first QB taken. With that being said he might turn out to be the best of this years draft class at QB. I'm bias but would love to see the Eagles get him at their draft position.
