Official 2016 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (1 Viewer)

I just wanted to point out:  They aren't "Bumblebee" jerseys.  They are "Cheeseburglar" jerseys(too bad Ol' Big, Fat Joel Steed wasn't around to wear 'em).

And they are awesome just because so many people think they are hideous. :)

I hope so, those were fun jerseys -

I think the other option is the  '66-67 Golden Triangle "Batman Jerseys"

These were the Steelers uniforms when I began going to Steelers games.  I would love to see them back.

If not I think the white-on-white unis of the early 70s would be good:http://www.steelersdepot.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/steelers-all-white-color-rush-uniforms-777x437.jpg

Some bad news on Ladarius Green:

Headaches, not ankle injury, sidelining Ladarius Green

LATROBE, Pennsylvania -- The Steelers made just one splashy -- and much-needed -- free agent signing this past offseason, tight end Ladarius Green. They have yet to see him in their offense, though, and a member of the organization, informed of the player's health, said it has nothing to do with the tight end's surgically-repaired ankle -- but is instead an issue with recurring headaches.

Green signed a four-year, $20-million contract in March, which included a $4.75 million signing bonus, but he has yet to practice one play.

His ankle surgery in January ostensibly kept him out of spring practices and minicamp and he's spent the entirety of training camp on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has maintained that Green's sustained absence from the field is not entirely unexpected, and he reiterated that Wednesday, as he readied his team for its preseason opener Friday against the Lions.

"He's progressing, but we really thought it would be touch-and-go up to this point," Tomlin said. "The (ankle) surgery was not a routine cleanup, so we knew it would be a significant amount of time."

Green's agent, Adisa Bakara, however, immediately said, "His ankle is fine," when reached Wednesday night. Bakara would not comment on what is ultimately keeping Green sidelined, and his client has reportedly been seen running sprints at St. Vincent's College, while his teammates practice.

Green, then a member of the Chargers, complained of headaches after suffering two concussions in two weeks last September, according to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune. Those were his second and third concussions in less than one calendar year. Green sat out one game last season due to a concussion, while ankle issues sidelined him for two others. A concussion also caused Green to miss one game during the 2014 season.

Green was expected to help alleviate the hole left at tight end after the retirement of Heath Miller. It was Miller who was Ben Roethlisberger's security blanket, one of his most dependable targets -- and blockers -- for 11 seasons. Miller missed only eight games in those 11 years, and retired as the Steelers' tight end with the most all-time receiving yards, receptions and touchdowns.

If he is still suffering from symptoms from a concussion he sustained in September that is a real concern.
All these cryptic tweets from Bouchette floated out recently the past few days lead me to wonder if Steelers front office and team are seriously concerned about Green's longterm viability this season and future seasons.

Good thing is Jesse James has looked good in TC so far...

Here's another take from Pro Football Talk, so take it with a grain of salt - but there are some really damning quotes from the "unnamed source" - I'm officially very concerned.

Ladarius Green’s recurring headaches raise questions about his future, contract

The NFL Media report, attributed to an unnamed member of the Steelers, regarding the recurring headaches suffered by tight end Ladarius Green raises questions about the player’s future, and regarding his contract.

First, rumors of Green dealing with lingering headaches have been circulating since training camp opened. The person who first mentioned the ongoing headaches to PFT suggested that Green is considering retirement. If the headaches don’t resolve, retirement remains an option.

Second, earlier today the same source told PFT that there’s new speculation that the Steelers may eventually cut Green.

Third, the Steelers could end up recovering (or at least trying to recover) Green’s $4.75 million signing bonus. If he retires, Green definitely owes the money. Even if he’s cut, however, there’s a chance the Steelers could make the same argument the Patriots advanced three years ago regarding defensive end Jonathan Fanene.

in 2013, the Patriots signed Fanene, gave him a $3.85 million signing bonus, and later cut him due to a knee injury that, as the team argued, came from a condition he had failed to disclose. If Green didn’t tell the Steelers he was still experiencing headaches at the time he was signed (and if he was indeed experiencing headaches), the Steelers could try to recover the $4.75 million.

In Fanene’s case, the grievance was settled, allowing the player to keep the $2.5 million he had received while also allowing the team to keep the $1.35 million balance.

Green was the Steelers biggest off-season move and I was really excited to see what he could do.  With the suspension of Bryant, likely suspension of Bell for 4 weeks, Golson's injury and now this, it is turning out to be another off-season nightmare for the Steelers.

Green not ever playing sucks but need not be looked at as total loss. With Eli Rogers emerging in slot, Wheaton can lineup as second  outside wide out. Coates or DHB can run deep routes that Green would have run as TE in motion. Bell and Rogers can do underneath plays. Antonio can pretty much run the entire route tree. James will have to try and do his best Miller impersonation as dual threat blocker/receiver.

The thing that really sucks about Green is that had the Steelers known they would have went in a different direction.  Maybe they would have drafted so tight end, maybe they would have signed another tight end or they could have used the cash to sign a FA to help in the secondary or lock up DeCastro.

if he retires they should get a big junk of his signing bonus back no?

Totally agree with your excellent point about getting screwed out of drafting a tight end.  I would have been thrilled if they could have drafted Higbee.  Who knows....maybe Green can overcome whatever ails him. If not, I think the Steelers can recoup most of the signing bonus.

1st half takeaways :

Landry Jones has looked better than his numbers. Made a few really nice throws and no egregious mistakes. Just what I want to see from him.

Daryl Richardson hype is not hype. Guy looks REALLY fast/sudden. I want him on the 53.

Eli Rogers has made a few plays. Hype seems real there too. I think he has a future with this team.

Jordan Berry has been terrific. FWIW.

Villanueva has been awful. Ryan Harris may win the LT job.

James Harrison is a GD marvel.

Shamarko Thomas showing well. Good sign there.

I like what I've seen from Ricardo Matthews thus far.

Too many missed tackles and 3rd down conversions allowed. Last year all over again.

I said last year at this time that I liked Doran Grant and they cut him. Has a pick 6 tonight and a fumble recovery that was ruled out of bounds but I think he had it. He's a little limited athletically but has good awareness. Maybe a conversion to safety in the cards.

Throw the ball to Sammie Coates FFS.

I think William Gay is the most underappreciated player on the team.

How about Hargrave?

It is the first game so not time to hit the panick button but terrible tackling, fumbles, and many drops are the sign of poor fundamentals.  Luckily they are with guys who shouldn't be starting.  Although you would hope that Sammie Coates would have improved.

Secondary looked a bit better but I need to see them against better receivers

If  Villanueva doesn't improve then Ben's health is going to be an issue

Steelers sign three FAs:

The Pittsburgh Steelers reinforced after their first wave of preseason injuries.

They placed safety Ross Ventrone (hamstring) on the injured-reserve list and waived  offensive tackle Brian Mihalik (knee) and defensive tackle Roy Philon (ankle) with injury designations.

Pittsburgh signed defensive back Julian Whigham, offensive tackle Wade Hansen and defensive tackle Khaynin Mosley-Smith. Hansen and Mosley-Smith were tryout players at the Steelers' rookie minicamp in May. Mosley-Smith played for Pitt from 2011-15 and came to the Panthers as a standout out of nearby Woodland Hills and Milford Academy (N.Y.).

At the time Whigham was with the Buffalo Bills, who released him on June 9.

My optimism is slowly vanishing for this upcoming season.  I try to remain ever-hopeful that no matter what befalls the Steelers they'll still do great.  Bryant goes down, well that's why we got Coates! No problem.  Bell might be suspended 4 games, well, he also might not? Green has concussion symptoms months later and might retire, Come on!

If we have Ben, Brown, and Pouncey, and Bell for at least 12 games, we'll have a shot.  But we should have had a much, much, much better shot.

Big Ben, Antonio Brown,  Le’Veon Bell and DeAngelo Williams won't play on Thursday against the Eagles.

While I agree wholeheartedly it really shows what a farce these preseason games have become.  They need to reduce these down to 2 games...

I hope Pouncey, Shazier, Heyward, Tuitt, Decastro, Gilbert, Gay, and Harrison only play one drive. The others need practice and we can't afford to lose any of these guys.

The games are extremely valuable for evaluating young players, cutting to two would be a terrible idea.

Aside from injuries that occur during camp or pre-season games very few of the 53 man roster spots are determined by the games themselves.

The vast majority of those decisions are already made before the kickoff of the first pre-season game.   Even the practice squad is determined by more by camp performance than pre-season games.

If there were 2 pre-season games you would still see starters sit most of the games which would leave plenty of time for evaluation.  I would also bet that more teams would have joint practices and scrimmages if there were 2 pre-season games.

I think teams would get by nicely with only 2 pre-season games.

Christ, Landry Jones is so frustrating. Makes a few nice plays and is moving the team.... Then throws another pick in the end zone. To be fair, 1 of those 3 INTs was a fluke and not really his fault but the other two were balls he shouldn't have thrown. He's got to cycle through his reads and make better decisions.

4 picks in one half!

#### Landry Jones.

There has to be a free agent QB out there somewhere that is better than Landry.

What's Rex Grossman doing these days?

The problem is that anyone they sign now is going to be woefully unprepared to run the offense if Ben were to get hurt anytime soon.

As ugly as this has been, 2 of those INTs were ill-advised throws on which the defender made a good play. One of them was a fluke and is largely on Cobi Hamilton for batting the ball off the defender's helmet and up into the air. That last one, he got absolutely blasted as he threw and it's not as if he sat around in the pocket. Edge protection was abysmal.

On the plus side, Eli Rogers has looked good again. Defense isn't exactly facing the Brady Patriots but a lot of 3 and outs, sure tackling, not allowing a lot of 3rd down conversions.

Landry Jones should be on his hands and knees thanking god that he was drafted to a team with such brittle/abused quarterbacks.  I mean this guy isn't CFL qualified

You can't even judge these back up wide receivers because the only pass he can throw is a short slant.  I guess we can test to their yards after receptions because that is pretty much it
