Official 2016 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (1 Viewer)

I'll reserve judgment to see how the rest of the draft falls.

Would have taken less than Seattle got to move down to Denver's spot.

Same thing every year with you guys. Steelers take someone not as expected, IB flips out, few days down the line they realize they're an athletic freak that Colbert and Co. wanted all along, everyone is happy again.

Yeah, not feeling so great about this.  Especially since Denver traded up.  When the NFL.com guys said Burns I was like, they're smoking something because he's not worth a 1st round pick.  Whelp.

Really hope I look back in 4 years and was like, how could I not have seen how good he'd be!  But I'm not optimistic.

Welcome to the Steelers Artie, hope you become a star.

No flipping out here.  Just disappointment.

I just don't think we get to a second contract with a first round CB if they prove to be worth their draft spot.  If they aren't worth their draft spot, we can resign them, but why?

IB is "flipping out"?  Clearly you weren't around during the "The Steelers don't draft offensive lineman before round 5" years.

It's 4 years. That's a window and probably the last window Ben has. I understand the BPA mindset but they truely have no reliable CB's right now. I'm sure they went crazy scouting all these CB's and know what they are looking at. Remember when everyone cried about them not going out of their way for Justin Gilbert?

I think people are mostly upset because we think that we could have taken the Seahawks deal, 31st pick and a 3rd rounder and STILL GOTTEN BURNED.  And yes, the Steelers got Burned is his new catch phrase.

While I get what you're saying, and share the trepidation, we haven't seen them take a 1st round CB that played up to his first round billing since Rod.  They paid him(once, but not twice).

So they MAY pay him if he hits.

Our need for a DT is just as big if not bigger than CB.

Like I said, lets see how the rest of the draft fills out.

Only reason I'm not totally hopping mad about Billings is that the DL class IS very deep.

Going to hate seeing him elsewhere though.  Think Billings is going to be a star.

The problem is if in 3 years, he's worth his draft position, we won't resign him.
C'mon mang.  You've been pissed for 10 years that we havent gone first round CB.

Now we do .   Y U STILL MAD

edit:   Maybe it is rep!   was it OL you were mad about for years?    Hmm.

The importance of the DT has been phased out some due to changing offenses and the shift to Butler instead of Lebeau. I'm far less concerned about the DL especially with our DE's.

Well, sure.  If he's a Hall of Famer, I'll certainly reconsider.

I think there was 0 chance they could have traded down and still gotten Burns. No doubt in my mind that KC would have taken him. That's why they traded out of their pick. So if they trade down, and KC takes Burns, who do the Steelers take? Billings? Meh, plenty of DL depth available in the second. What CB would be there in the 2nd? Cyrus Jones? If they're lucky.

It was OL, not CB.

Still, while underwhelmed, I'm willing to wait to see the rest of the draft.

Colbert has had his misses (Ziggy Hood, Jarvis Jones) but even those guys contributed. I'm not sure I can remember the last time a 1st rounder has just bombed.

If you don't consider Troy Williamson a bust, it would have to be Jamain Stephens.

That's a pretty long run of 1st round adequacy.  He was back in...'96?

Ok, I've had my chance to complain, now I'm all in.

Artie Burns, new top corner in the NFL (after a year to learn)!  He's fast, can bait QBs into INTs, and is a fighter.  He might get some flags, and play with sloppy hands, but he also only allowed 2 TDs in the last 2 years and a passer rating of 40, so there's lots of positives to look at.

In Colbert and Tomlin we trust! (Except Dri Archer, that was dumb)

So, now, who do we want tomorrow?  DT/NT and Safety?  WR and DE?  O-line just because?

My ideal of who's left... Nkemdiche and Justin Simmons.

He's about to become a millionaire overnight -- so top NFL prospect Artie Burns decided to celebrate early ... by dropping $41k on some sick jewelry, TMZ Sportshas learned.

The former University of Miami star is projected to go in the 1st or 2nd round ... and earlier this week, he swung over to Joe Avianne's at Avianne and Co. in NYC to ice up.

"Artie came through and picked up a 2-tone Rolex ($19k), a diamond cross ($3k) and a diamond tennis chain ($19k)," Avianne tells us.

So what's Artie's next purchase? Hopefully a safe.

Well there goes that... Thanks a lot Cardinals!

Ok, new ideal - Myles Jack and Simmons!

(Just trying to help Jack get drafted)

Our DEs would be even better if they had a legit guy on the inside/someone who could still bring pressure when they're rotated out.   Last year Hayward//Tuitt played a copious amount of snaps and by the time the playoff loss at Denver rolled around they were completely toast.

The importance of a "lard belly" nose guard has been phased out.  That isn't what Billings is.

Don't mean to burst a bubble, but apparently that's all BULL.  The jeweller just sent that out as a publicity stunt, apparently he went earlier in Feb and bought 1 used watch for ~$5000.  Still a lot, but he's got siblings and a child to care for, and seems level headed, he's not blowing cash he hasn't made yet.

Upside : Burns is one of 3 or 4 CBs in this draft with the upside of a Pro Bowl #1 lock down corner.

Downside : Like Apple, he's a penalty waiting to happen. Super raw, needs a lot of coaching. Just as likely to be out of the league in 4 years as he is to be a good starting boundary corner.

Some people have already labeled Jarvis Jones a bust, sooooo......

And for the record, as I stated earlier, I really like Burns' potential.  Just was figuring he'd be a 2.

I agree totally with Finkle. Billings would be a terrific nose in the odd front base but could also log some snaps at the 5 tech and would be really good as a penetrating tackle in the nickel package. I think he's terribly underrated and some team is going to get a real steal.

I said Jones was a miss, sooooooo....

Colbert just said Burns was a "no brainer and the best bump and run corner in the draft". If that's the way the team feels, what is there to whine about. Seems clear they may not have even valued other corners higher then this guy. Can't always go with what Mike Mayock and Mel Kiper say. They don't coach and they don't scheme. The Steelers football philosophy has never been cookie cutter and they've always viewed certain players higher then other teams in the league because they can more correctly contribute to the unit rather then individually.

Heavily underrated.  He is not just "Casey Hampton 2.0"  and I'm not sure how that whole meme got birthed to be honest.

Guy just totally shoves around the interior pocket, vs run and pass.  Interior pressure is probably the most misunderstood and underrated "commodity", by many, many fans anyway, in modern football.  If you can shove the C and or G back into the QBs kitchen the amount of good things that can happen go up exponentially.

They must really like Burns because they had the offer from Denver too for an extra 3rd round pick, but they didn't want to risk Burns being taken by KC.  The prevailing thought is that's why KC traded down.  They wanted Burns with their pick and after he was gone they felt they could get better value at the top of the 2nd.

Order of people who are left who would be awesome for the Steelers in the 2nd round:

  1. Myles Jack
  2. Jarran Reed
  3. Andrew Billings
  4. Noah Spence
  5. Reggie Ragland
  6. Vonn Bell
  7. Chris Jones
  8. Kevin Dodd
  9. Sterling Shepard
  10. Emmanuel Ogbah
  11. Jonathan Bullard
  12. Cody Whitehair
  13. A'Shawn Robinson
  14. Michael Thomas
  15. Su'a Cravens
  16. Mackensie Alexander (Yes, we already got a CB, but the value! Think of the value! and the fact that we don't have a good CB track record)
  17. Austin Johnson
  18. Hunter Henry?
  19. Tyler Boyd
  20. Deion Jones
  21. Kyler Fackrell
  22. Kamalei Correa
  23. Josh Perry
  24. Darian Thompson
  25. Shilique Calhoun
  26. Jeremy Cash
  27. Roberto Aguayo (jk)
Assuming that some OTs and QBs go, we should be set up well for value in the 2nd and possibly the 3rd also.  Hope we don't reach for need in the 2nd, which it appears we might have done a little in the 1st.

We can no longer say that 1997 was the last time the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted a cornerback in the first round as the team selected Miami product Artie Burns 25th overall Thursday night.

Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert talked about the team’s newest player immediately after the selection was made.

“We’re proud an exited to draft a cornerback out of the University of Miami, Artie Burns,” said Colbert. “Solid young man, went through a little bit of tragedy this year with his mother passing during the season. he fought his way through that, came out the other side and put together a solid year where he ended up amassing six interceptions and putting himself among the top corners in this draft class.”

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin also added his thoughts on Burns.

“Natural bump corner and that appears to be something that’s a very natural element in his game,” said Tomlin. “He’s good at the ball, he’s good at the ball down the field.”

Tomlin later added that he considers Burns a “good piece of clay to work with.”

Burns, who measured in at the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine at 5117, 193-pounds recorded 96 total tackles and 7 interceptions in the 37 games that he played in at Miami. The former high school track star also ran the 40 yard-dash in 4.46 seconds.

While the Steelers apparently didn’t bring Burns to Pittsburgh for a pre-draft visit, Colbert and Tomlin were both present for his rainy pro day. Burns will be hard-pressed to crack the Steelers starting lineup by the start of the 2016 regular season. He should, however, be able to help out on special teams immediately.

Burns is an outside cornerback and figures to battle Ross Cockrell for playing time throughout his rookie season.

“He needs work,” said Colbert. “He’ll need work on his off coverage. He’ll need work on his zone coverage, but he’s a third-year junior. He’s only played three years, only started two. So there’s a ton of upside with him.”
