Assuming that some OTs and QBs go, we should be set up well for value in the 2nd and possibly the 3rd also.  Hope we don't reach for need in the 2nd, which it appears we might have done a little in the 1st.

There's a chance (a very small one) that he lasts until our pick.  Who knows, maybe they trade their 4th to move up and grab him (I highly doubt we trade up though).

Ideally I hope we get either Billings, Vonn Bell, Dodd, Reed or Spence.  Sadly, I doubt any of these 5 make it past the middle of round 2.

Do we pull the trigger on Mack if he's still there at 58?

 
Head scratching pick to me. Why are they taking someone in the 1st rd who even by they're own comments pretty much saying won't help secondary right away. So we are still in the same boat defensively as when the draft started, just don't get it.

 
I dunno.  Burns may not start but it isn't like he has a bunch of stars playing in front of him.   He obviously has the talent, and is definitely a high character guy, it is just a matter of how quickly he picks up the defense and earns the trust of the coaching staff.

Right now it's Gay, Cockrell, Golson, and Grant ahead of Burns.  Gay is our best starter.  Golson is an unproven slot CB (or outside CB if you believe Tomlin about his potential, 5' 9" but plays tall).  Grant isn't guaranteed to make the roster and could switch to S.  Cockrell is who Burns has to compete with for playing time, BUT, we have lots of DBs on the field in most of our packages.  We could end up with 4 CBs and 2 Safeties on the field, so even as CB4 Burns could see time on the field day 1.

 
Let's assume for a minute that the Steelers go Safety and DT on day 2, in either order.

Day 3 we're left with 1 4th, 1 comp-6th, and 2 7ths.  Should we stay put in round 4, or try and trade back to get a 5th and 6th?  Most late picks are crap shoots and we still would have needs at OLB, DE, WR, RB, QB, O-line depth.  Needless to say we have no shot of taking care of all that, but we have a better shot if we have another pick.

If a team like the Bears want to move up to grab a QB who is falling (Cardale?), and they offer 150 and 185 for 123, I think we should take it.

And that's what frightens me.  He's got talent, but he tends to grab and hold when receivers create separation on him.  That's going to happen all the time in the NFL until he realizes he cannot coast on athletic ability and needs to learn technique.  If he's on the field early, a lot of people are going to want to toss him on the scrap heap and will be screaming bust after he gets flagged for 2 deep PI calls against the Ravens and we lose 14-13.  That's not fair.  He needs time to develop, which is why I find it a somewhat odd pick for a team that has a SB window open now and needs immediate help in the defensive backfield.  A guy like Vonn Bell could play week 1 (or 3 or 4) and help.  Burns, IMO, cannot.

 
Not sure if everyone's started checking out new mock drafts, but apparently the Steelers are a team that reaches on players now.  A lot of the mock drafts have us taking guys with 6-7 round grades in the 2nd or 3rd round (other than Jeremy Cash who a lot of people are mocking to the Steelers in the 2nd). 

Saw Hunter Sharp, WR, mocked to us in the 3rd.  What?  A WR with a 7th round grade who was suspended this year?  Awesome.  Apparently after 1 pick that might be a reach of ~10 spots, we are now a team that doesn't even approach BPA anymore.

So because some internet hacks mock it that way, it will most certainly happen that way  :thumbup:

 
Frankly, I put little to no credence into the position rankings or mock drafts.  They're good for a yuk or two, but ultimately it's system compatibility and team needs that dictate the value of a player TO THAT TEAM.  If the Steelers think Burns is a great fit for their system, I don't have a big problem with them taking him in the 1st, even if he carries a "second round grade."  He wasn't going to be there at 58.  However, if the Cowboys were really offering 2.4 and 3.4 for 1.25 and the Steelers got that call and passed, I just think that was foolish.  Just one guy's opinion and Colbert and Tomlin get paid to do this, I don't.  They seem to think that :

a) Burns wasn't going to be available to them at pick #35.

b) They needed to go corner with their first pick due to the relative scarcity of available players in the defensive backfield as opposed to in the front 7, based both on positional depth in this class and the players that had been taken 1-24.

c) Burns was the last CB (or maybe DB, period) they had on their board that carried a late 1st/early 2nd round grade and losing him would strain their draft plan.

Personally, I would have loved to have 35, 58, 67, and 89 in a draft that many think goes 80-100 players deep with quality future starters, but they must have thought that with Joseph, Neal, Jackson, Apple, Hargreaves, and Ramsey off the board that Burns was the last premier DB left and didn't want to come out of this draft without a major talent infusion back there.

 
I find this to be an absolute "potential" pick. Huge upside and not nearly ready. What he does well is mostly is from god given talent and unique to him.

My buddys watching the draft with me all said that he looks like a WR (aka Sean Smith-esque). And with Colbert saying this year will essentially be his senior season of college (he only played 2 year at college) we probably wont see much at all year one.  Typical around here. A big swing at the plate. Im good with that, but my optimism is tempered. If he "gets it" and can play and learn the technical side we are golden. But there is plenty of doubt if that can be molded.

I hear what you are saying but there is doubt for pretty much every pick.  You never really know how good these guys are until you get them in practice and then on the field.

For the record Burns is very very young.  I looked at the Sparq scores (which for some reason doesnt include him) and he was younger then every other draft CB.

Also noticed that he had the longest arms (very apparent on the film) outside of Jalen Ramsey who is 1.5 inches taller as the #5 overall pick.

 
Ive researched the draft this year less than ever, and was unimpressed with the Burns pick last night. However after reading more my only complaint is that I dont think he will really play many snaps/start until next year at the earliest. The majority of the NFL.com guys mocked him either to us or at least in the 1st round, and apparently KC wanted him and traded out of the 1st when he was no longer available, so IMO he really wasn't much of a reach. Definitely seems like a good guy based on the articles Ive read here and elsewhere. Hoping for the best with him and excited to see what we do tonight.

 
I'm guessing DL and Offensive Weapon (WR or RB).... or safety.  Ok, I have no freakin clue.

Why/How do the Seahawks and Packers move up to pick before us in round 2?

rd 1 went

24  CIN

25  PIT

26  SEA

27  GB

Now rd 2 is

24  CIN

25 SEA

26  GB

27  PIT

And none of those appear to be because of trades.

It's how the draft works.  Same reason the Browns and Titans swapped in round 2 and the Browns went first.

If teams are tied for record, the first round is based on tie breakers.  After that, they rotate.  So, it went PIT, SEA, GB.  Then SEA, GB, PIT.  Then GB, PIT, SEA.  And so on.  So most teams have a similar record to someone else, those that don't keep their position.  For example, Denver is always last and Carolina second to last (not including complementary picks).  

Does this make sense?

Colbert said there were at least a couple more corners they thought had starting skills and it was really good draft for them.

So far only 1 more CB has gone in the next 21 selections (thru Lions in 2nd).

Another CB, possibly.

I think there is a chance the Bengals take Boyd if he is there. I will be really missed if Billings falls all the way and the Bengals take him.

Colts traded up to jump Pittsburgh to take Green. Must have thought he was our guy. Wonder if that means Bell is the guy, but I want Billings. 

 
The fact that Billings continues to fall shows that some people had way too high a value on him.

 
I question this pick as well. Again, both might be good picks in 2-3 years but I think both guys could hurt as much as help this season.
