OFFICIAL 2017 Kansas City Royals Thread (1 Viewer)

Win or lose, this will be an important season in KC.  Hosmer, Moustakas, Cain and Escobar will all be free agents and they can't afford all of them.  Dayton Moore's decision to extend their window by extending Gordon and bringing in Kennedy and Soria isn't looking great now.   They're stuck with some major commitments through 2019 that will limit their flexibility if they decide to blow it up.  The alternative is to continue spending $130M on a pretty mediocre ballclub.

Actually, they don't really look that bad financially after this year. They could blow it up starting in 2018 if they want. Their major commitments in 2018 are:

Gordon: $ 20M

Kennedy: $16M

Duffy: $14M

Hammel: $9M

Soria: $9M

Wood: $6.5M

Moss: $7.25M

Perez: $8.7M

So 90M for these guys. You also have Soler adding 4M, Butera at 2.3M, and 2M still for Infante.

After 2018 these drop off either because of expiring contracts, mutual options, or club options:

Butera

Soria

Wood

Moss

So the thing Moore HAS done (besides deliver a trophy) is set up his contracts to be able to have some flexibility. In my opinion.

That's all true ChiefD but the finances could change significantly if they bring back a couple of their free agents.  The free agent compensation rules under the new CBA won't help as much in the rebuilding process.  I'm not sure any of the four free agents are obvious qualifying offer candidates.
