missed the game, how was it, anything we can take from it other than pounding a mac team?
Not really.

They looked good and deep - but CMU wasn't very good.

We will know a lot more Saturday night.
Disagree.

There's nothing of substance because we had them out manned across the board, but what I really look for in games like these is how we came out. We were crisp, prepared, mentally dialed in, domi9nating the lines...everything you'd want in a power facing an inferior opponent. Offense looked MUCH smoother than any other time these guys have been in charge. These guys never really knew how to run a Denard offense and it showed, they know how to manage a pro style attack and that's exactly what Gardner did yesterday.

I don't think we'll totally dominate Notre Dame, but I expect us to win by > 1 score. We should have no problem putting up 30 and unless the ball takes some strange bounces I find it hard to imagine ND can score much more than 20.

The defense stood out to me. I still can't believe how they have progressed in three short years. Morris looked good too. He was very composed and made good decisions. Green's going to be a beast. I really want to see what this defense can do and I think we'll get to see that this weekend. They seemed to be in base packages most of the day against CMU.

The game was amazing Saturday, far and away the best atmosphere and best game production I have seen of any sport at any level. It's no surprise that there are reports that there were recruits at the game that have supposedly moved Michigan into their top spot. There isn't another college football team in the country that can put on what Michigan did Saturday.

I know Hand was there....what a huge get it'd be to land both him and Peppers in the same class.

I can't imagine an 18 year old not being totally blown away. From the five fighter jets doing fly by after fly by, crossing each other over the stadium before the game to the near SB level Beyonce laser show at half, the crowd, the amazing series of videos they showed during the game, the Harmon ceremony, the tribute to and presentation of the hoops team (with 2 NBA players). It was mind blowing.

USF Blog from a guy who hit the USF/MSU game and then the ND/UM game

http://www.voodoofive.com/2013/9/6/4702024/live-from-michigan-state-we-are-there

We left Lansing and headed to Ann Arbor for Notre Dame-Michigan. This was the non-USF portion of the trip so I'll try and keep the gushing to a minimum, but that game was a life-altering experience for a college football fan. The city itself was basically shut down. We went to the legendary golf course tailgate across the street from the Big House about 90 minutes before kickoff, and people told us they were in line at 8am to be ready when the gates opened at noon. I've been to a lot of college towns and watched a lot of college football, but I have never seen or felt anything like I did in Ann Arbor last night.

The crowd on 3rd downs and scoring plays made some of the loudest and most passionate sounds I've ever heard. We were in the 94th row, and every person sitting around us was glued to every single play. This was as much a religious experience for them as it was a football game.

Also the game presentation was literally flawless. The band played at exactly the right moments, the perfect music always played at the perfect time. The drum line was great. The intro videos were great. They honored their Final Four volleyball and men's basketball teams at the first two media timeouts, and as the crowd went bananas the band played "Hail To The Victors" while the camera went along the line of the team showing them singing along.

They even made Seven Nation Army awesome, and I didn't know that was possible anymore.

As a program and a fan base, they get it on every single level. It was an athletic department that knows what it's doing, right down to the ushers being gentlemanly and polite when I got too close to the walkway railing to take pictures from midfield. Everyone had been trained to sing the same song the same way. The students have an app on their phones where they can check in at Olympic sports and earn points to get better football tickets. The inside of my collector's soda cup had a quote from Bo Schembechler. They had thought of everything, and had an answer for it all.

The other thing the former athletics employee in me noticed: They are not the Wolverines, they are Michigan Football. Besides the apparel stores being named The Den, there was literally not a single reference to Wolverines in the entire stadium, but the Block M was everywhere. They have branded themselves perfectly. It was incredibly well done, and that was before the Beyonce-themed halftime show by the Michigan band where the lights got dimmed and Bey Bey herself was on the big screen introing the set.

It was also another reminder in how far USF has to go. We'll get there someday and hopefully in my lifetime, but the gap is just so massive. And as readers of this blog can attest, we think it wouldn't hurt for us to take a few lessons from the big boys every once in a while. Sort of like dressing for the job you want, not the job you have.

Oh, and they honored Dolphins owner Steven Ross for his $200 million gift to the Ross School of Business and Michigan Athletics with a full soccer-style tifo in the student section and some "Hail To The Victors." That doesn't hurt either.

I am moving to another position in my company....licensed business...I've been heavily involved in MLB and NFL...now will be college only.

We have exclusively with 20 schools to date...Texas, UNC, UF, UGA, and Michigan!

GO BIG BLUE!!!! My future depends on it.

The atmosphere in the Ceaser's Palace sports book in Vegas was incredible. So many people with money on the game. ND driving at the end ready to blow the point spread and the double bounce interception in the end zone. It was awesome.

Big Letdown game....cant have that
Agreed....still young and learning, but that was terrible.
Still dont run the ball as well as we should with all these 9* OL recruits.

Also, the skill positions are dreadful. Gallon is a nice player, and the TE's are elite. But the rest of the WR corps is terrible and Fitz Toussiant is average at best.
Still a very young team...no question. Don't have the talent to cover up for Gardner when he's off.

The cliche "letdown game" almost always gathers steam from young players thinking they are better than they really are based on winning a "big game" the previous week.

Well...that happened :oldunsure:

I officially have a negative opinion of Borges. The play calling in the OTs was brutal...completely passive and doing the "minimum". I really hope Hoke and company have plans to get an offensive line for Green at some point. I don't care if you are a 30 star RB, you can't do much if the defensive line is having a circle jerk in the backfield before the handoff even occurs. Brutal.

Anyone know Lewan's official issue?? Is it concussion? Losing him doesn't help the wobbly Oline.

For a 4OT "thriller" it looked like neither team wanted to win, UM caring slightly less. And having to endure Matt Millen & his boy "Tessy" as announcers made it even worse if that was humanly possible.

After the second OT miss, my gut told me they weren't going to win.

We came out guns a blazing vs. Central and Notre Dame. I was excited about this team. Those were the only times I really saw us play aggressive when we weren't already facing a double digit deficit. That's coaching. I understand getting complacent vs. Akron, I don't understand how we don't respond coming out of halftime. I understand UConn coming out with a fire lit under them, I don't understand why we just went through the motions until we were like '####!' there's only 20 minutes left! I thought the bye came at the perfect time, we would come out vs. Minnesota like we did in the first two games, put them to sleep, then carry that momentum over into the rest of the month. When we came out flat again I immediately looked at the Penn State game and saw a loss coming. The final was not indicative of the Minnesota game, we were just going through the motions then the Gophers bottomed out at the end. No explanation for overtime, but the rest of that game fits the narrative of the season after the first two games - come out flat, fight back once in a hole, then get complacent with a lead.

Until that's corrected we can lose any game from here on out. Really no reason to believe it will at this point since it hasn't yet. We'll see if they respond now that they have a L. Frustrating if it took a L to do it, should never come to that.

Problem is, I think there's only one O-Line commitment for 2014 at the moment?? They need all hands on deck.
Talent isnt the problem. How many more 4 and 5 star O line commits can you have....they clearly arent being coached up

Funk is gonna get canned.
SOMETHING's off....They can't run block and Devin has to be better with his decisions. A lot better! I will say that he came back strong after his mistakes in the first half. That's the first time I've seen him really battle back and perform. The other games he's just kinda managed his issues and gotten out alive. This last week, I felt like he was really able to put it behind him and turn the corner.

That image is from the first overtime. Into that defense, Borges thought it was a good idea to run over tackle to the boundary side. Guess how many yards Fitz got?

It's long been my theory that one of the Big 10's main problems has to do with coaching and this is a microcosm. Solid incoming classes & a bunch of players drafted into the the NFL, it must be something along those lines.

Right....Apologists keep saying "Borges doesn't have the pieces he needs" etc. I don't buy it. He didn't know how to use Robinson at all and I'm wondering if he knows how to use the weapons he has now. I don't think Fitz is a stud by any stretch, but he's serviceable and can get the job done. The OLine has been brutal. I get that they are still trying to get some depth there, but man....they shouldn't be THAT bad.

I don't think that's it, I think the problem is he doesn't trust Gardner, rightfully so.

Gardner was awesome at the end of last year and beginning of this year, then Borges began changing the play calls and putting Gardner in uncomfortable positions. The picks followed/were the result. Put the kid in positions to succeed and he does. Regardless, if he doesn't trust him...move on. No sense in trying to fit a round peg in a square hole. If Gardner hadn't earned his trust towards the end of last year and beginning of this, he's not going to earn it.

I think Gardner just hasn't gotten it back since that God awful play vs. ND. That play got in his head. Maybe the coaches didn't help him get over it, maybe he just has the yips, I don't know, I'm not in that locker room. I just know he's not been the same QB since that play. This really showed in the first OT play calling, instead of putting the ball in Gardner's hands Borges and Hoke decided to put it on Gibbons' foot.

That was very telling.

Borges believes he has the best kicker in the B1G. Gibbons might be, but if he is, it's not setting a very high bar. I despise the "play for the minimum needed" approach 100% of the time. Borges admitted that's what they were doing. I'm not sure it was more than that. Hopefully they learned from taking that approach and don't do it again.
