***Official 2022 World Cup Thread***

I'm up. Need to walk the dog, pound some caffeine, and feed the kids. Then Dad needs to explain that video games aren't using the big TV from 10-12:30 today. That should be fine, right?

Hopefully better for you than for me. Birthday party for the kids of one of my wife’s friends starts at 10am. Tried doing the “oh, that’s the start time of the World Cup game” to hint to see if my wife would let me off the hook to stay at home to watch the game while she took our son alone to the party.

That did not go so well for me. So, I’ll apparently be checking my phone while at a party with about 20 screaming 6 year olds.

Oh, eff that.

This rings true even if there wasn't a World Cup going on.

The recuperative power of CP's jewels and Ferreira are the obvious headlines here. Zimm back in as well.

Also, this NEVER happens -- the US has now had it's full first-choice lineup available for four straight games. Maybe Sargent's a miss today, but that's splitting hairs with what we've seen in prior WCs or even the last two years of qualifying. Having this happen during the actual World Cup -- no injuries, no yellow card suspensions -- is just incredible good fortune.

This is why I don't like the "free roll" and "mission accomplished" talk.

If the goal of this team ultimately in 2026 is to be a legit competitor then we should go for that now. 2 years of qualifying and we rarely had more than 2 or 3 of our core available at the same time. Now, finally, for once, we have ALL of them healthy.

Putting everything on 2026, one tournament, is crazy to me. So much can happen. Pulisic can pick up a high ankle sprain a week before the tournament. McKennie can tear his ACL in February 2026. The chances that we're missing MULTIPLE guys from our core are probably higher than not. But right now we've got them all, so let's freaking go for it.

No one's expecting them to tank or anything. Of course they're going to go for it. And a 1-2% chance of taking it down isn't zero.

But this isn't their time yet. At home, with all these guys in their peak -- plus four years to fill some of the holes -- is where the big expectations are.

OFFICIAL US lineup!!! LFG!!!!!

------Pulisic Ferreira Weah
-McKennie Adams Musah
Robinson Ream Zimmerman Dest
--------------Turner
I still don’t get why Weah up too with Gio on the wing isn’t possible, but apart from that, I’d rather see Jesus out there than Haji

That is where I am too. Lets hope it is Gio instead of Haji because it is very unlikely Jesus has 90 in him.

I set up a very simple pick 'em bracket:

Here's the Link --> https://bracketchallenge.world?pool=Yanks+Rule+Limeys+Drool:R29Hb1Npcklhbg==

Password is: SuboptimalClearance

Name of the Pool is "Yanks Rule Limeys Drool"

I can't tell whether any personal info is shown, but my son, friends and co-workers are all invited so I'm trusting you all not to dox anyone.

FOUND IT

I'm not last!
I'm in 4th!

And yeah...zero memory of filling that one out.
I think that if you got the 2 teams correct to make it out of group you should get points. It shouldn't be counted against you as they qualified to make the knockouts. :kicksrock:

Weah has been brilliant out there and Reyna doesn't stretch a defense the same way. Plus, four games with a completely intact core and IMO the team has a chance to start to 'gel' in a way national teams don't usually get.
I get why you maybe can’t do it now, but all three center forward options are a clear step down talent wise. Just feels tactically rigid. Would have been nice for GGG to have this in his bag for facing teams with more firepower.

McKennie, Adams, Ream, Dest, Acosta all on yellows. Hopefully none of them pick one up and miss the quarters if we move on....

I think the point of that is more that Pulisic just turned 24. He'll be 27 during 2026's WC. He's the "old man" of the core group. The next 3 1/2 years will see a ton of development among the core group of guys on this team. The expectation is that "individually" they'll be miles better than they are now.

Also, I view 2026 not as our "one chance" to win a WC, but as the official start of the "soccer era" in the US. When kids get to watch a fun, talented group of US players play at home, with the system now in place to support soccer development.... I think it'll be the explosion point of soccer in this nation.

I could have sworn FIFA changed things last WC so that no player would ever have to be yellow card suspended for the finals but with them resetting after the round of 16, anyone who gets yellow in quarters and semis has to sit the final.

It always feels like FIFA leaves it ahead of/between the knockout rounds to announce card clearing. That it isn't actually KNOWN until they announce it. But maybe that is just my image of FIFA
