*** Official 2024-25 NHL, Playoff talk... Nothing better *** (3 Viewers)

In the last three weeks...
beat Winnepeg, Edmonton, New Jersey, Winneprg again and Tampa Bay tonight. All the lines a re jelling and playing so much better recently.

Shots against have gone down from 33/game to 27/game in that time.

MIght be Trouba coming in. He's played well. Might be Fowler leaving. He's not that good on D anymore.

LaCombe now has 8 goals. He's playing so well
why do they hate breath mintyukov?

They don't. They love him. Helleson has played so well. They now have 7 solid d men and they sit one of him, helleson or zellweger each game. It looks like they each sit two, then play 4.
The ducks d is light years better than last few years. Dumalin is also playing great, and I can see them trading him for a 2nd soon.

We have a flight and hotel reservations for their game against Utah in January. Haven't bought game tickets yet and now we're debating even going. It's one thing if they were playing hard and losing but I can't see spending all this money to watch them go through the paces and fold at the end.
Decent stretch of games for the Rangers, so we're heading to Utah tomorrow! Got some great seats.

Wow, pretty massive trade made mid-season here.

and a smaller, insignificant move snuck in late last night as well

And Markstrom out 6-8 weeks pretty big blow for the Devils.

and A thing of beauty is a joy forever

not happy as a Colorado fan
 Avalanche said they made their best contract extension offer to Rantanen and he rejected it. They wanted him to take close to what MacKinnon makes ($12.6 mill) and he was looking for close to what Draisaitl makes ($14 mill). Rantanen's a UFA at the end of the season, so he was getting traded now or before the trade deadline. Either way his days in Colorado were coming to an end.

I saw 4 to 6 weeks on Markstrom (and 2 weeks of that is the 4 Nations thing which he now won't be playing in) - honestly from the look of the original hit it looked MUCH worse I think Allen will be able to carry the load. Very interesting that Poulter got the call-up to back him up rather than Daws. Very very few back to backs left for us so don't know how much he will play.

Random side note: Thursday and Friday were the first two days all the season that the Devils had a game in hand on anyone else in the league all season (The Sharks).

Utah lost a trademark battle so won't be called the Yeti.

Fans attending the next four home games get to vote on the remaining three options
Utah H.C.
Mammoth
Wasatch ("created to honor the idea of a mythical snow creature with a Utah-centric approach inspired by the Wasatch Mountain range")

They better vote Mammoth. "H.C." is too soccer and Wasatch is just dumb.

Too bad - thought that was a great name.

Easy for me to say, but also seems a bit short-sighted by the cooler company. Instant marketing for them.
Makes sense though. I often confuse overpriced coolers with professional hockey franchises.
For the longest time, I thought the Penguins' home arena The Igloo was actually a giant storage cooler.

Username checks out.

Looks like Wasatch got the boot, replaced with Outlaws
I was hoping we could Boaty McBoatface this one in, or keep the Utah Hockey Club (which for some reason, seems to be loathed), but unfortunately, only attendees at the next 4 home games get to vote. I'm not sure why the Utah Hockey Clubs hates their TV audience, but such is life.

Another NHL trade. This one is interesting. Need time to digest
Well, Rangers want to become tougher to play against. You have to give up something to get something and if Chytil can remain healthy, Canucks did well in the trade. I always thought Miller was a very good player, but I heard some things about him that leads me to believe you may not want him on your team. We shall see, Rangers have been underwhelming of late, still throw Lindgren out there, and now have Edstrom out the rest of the season which means my least favorite player (Vesey) will get ice time 🤢

4-nations starting up this week. Cursory glance, Canada is loaded top to bottom, rate them a 95/100. USA is fairly loaded top to bottom, but has some holes, rate them 90/100. Sweden is very good at the top end, but will need bottom end to do yeoman's work out there to get results. 86/100. Finland has a great top 6, but after that, will need a miracle to win this thing. 79/100.

Canada PP1
McDavid - MacKinnon - Crosby-Reinhart - Makar

Pretty sure that's good.

Not a lot of excitement over this 4-nations thing. I'll probably watch the Canada games but I'ma pretty diehard hockey fan. Bummer for USA to not have Q. Hughes. Arguably the best D-man this year. He carries Vancouver most nights .

Game one was pretty good. Took this PP unit about 12 seconds to score a beauty, and Sweden caught on quickly and didn't take another penalty the rest of the game.
I was surprised by the hitting that went on. I mean, this had the tenacity of a regular season game, maybe not a playoff game, but was a good watch.

Will watch tonight's USA/Finland game.

It certainly is no all-star game. This was intense. The crown was into it at the Bell Centre which really added to the excitement. 3-on-3 for 10 minutes is the way to go. Crosby played like a 25 year old. What a stud!

Canada/USA on Saturday is going to be fun!

Crosby's helper on the first goal last night was pretty. I didn't know he was only 37 or so. Watched him play Utah and though he isn't what he was, he's still way, way more than an above-average player. He's just not as fast as he once was. At least that's what it looked to me.

But that assist on the first goal last night? Should count as two assists, if you ask me. Heh.

Back when Minnesota got awarded a team, I wanted the mascot to be the IceHoles after our rich ice fishing tradition. We'd all be IceHole fans and the center ice logo could have been epic. It didn't get on the ballot despite my relentless campaigning.

U.S.A. leads 5-1 and running away with it. Looks like they are dominating in the neutral zone and on transition this period.

The hate for the USA is strong in Canada tonight against Finland judging by the anthems lol
An unfortunate thing that's been happening recently due to the political climate. 😕

Very unfortunate. Most people in the States that love hockey have nothing but positive feelings towards Canada. There are a lot of things that go into the politics of our country, but in general, people that are heavily involved in soccer and hockey aren't really responsible for the politics of the day in the U.S.

eta* edited to make it less political.

eta2* It would be a shame if that were reciprocated. I hope the good people of Boston are less provincial than to do so.

💯 i certainly wish fans could separate the two. Most do.

Power play here. Would love to see as many guys on the sheet as possible. Whet everybody's appetite before the huge game Saturday.

Yep. See my second edit. I hope the boos aren't returned likewise. Nothing but love. Any official or cultural animosity between the two countries is foolish and counterproductive. If only everybody agreed with me.

Boo the player respect the anthem? I don't know. I wouldn't boo at all for anyone. Well, maybe Brad Marchand, but that won't happen in Boston. Heh.

I loved early on when Panthers’ teammates Matthew Tkachuk and Niko Mikkola (or “Mikko Makela” as Ray Ferraro mistakenly said about his own old teammate) went at it.

Country first, mang

Auston Matthews would have saved the Phoenix/AZ franchise if he went there, I think. Too bad the lottery didn't fall that way for the fans in Arizona. But he deserves to be in one of the hockey capitals of the world.

This Saturday will have two great games. I'll not be watching either unfortunately, but I mean Finland playing for their proverbially tournament life there against a hated rival. And neither US or Canada can afford to drop points there or else risk not advancing. I think the US is going to find it very tough finding open ice and will need to grind grind grind. I think they played their hand too soon there showing the Tkahcuk's together vs Finland. Should have consider saving that one. US really shortened up the bench too, I'm not sure I heard Nelson, Larkin, or JT Millers name called but a handful of times. And Trochek only out there on faceoff's. But man, that Hughes/Guentzel/Matthews line was flying around the ice, that's a nice line.

We should probably change the subject. :)

They did some great things with this little tournament.

The scoring system 3-2-1. (y)

The 3-on-3 OT for 10 minutes. (y)

NO games Friday Feb 14 (y)

Double header Saturday (y)(y)

Double Header Monday (which is a holiday in most of Canada/Presidents Day) (y)(y)

Well done!

Sovereignty of your home country is something most people are extremely passionate about, and rightly so. I don't blame them.

Yes I mean it’s kinda crazy to be blaming Canadians. I’d be booing the anthem too.

Booing the anthem of any country anywhere is a non-starter. It shows a complete lack of respect for visitors on your soil. Anthems didn't even get booed during the Cold War. Perhaps you guys might reflect and think about why politics is the way it is right now if you're in support of this.

I'm not writing as a U.S.A. booster nor current political outlook supporter. Far from it. But you don't, on an international stage, boo people's anthems. We never did in my day even when the U.S.S.R. was paramount in hockey.

Anyway, back to hockey. I don't think the Americans showed their pairings too early. This isn't soccer and as they were saying last night, this tournament ends before it begins. Every game is huge now because of the tie. It forces some weird scenarios.

National Anthems guy was great.

Sid Crosby with a great looking Auston Matthews mustache.

Super great having multiple Tkachucks representing team USA.
