"He spent a very drunken afternoon": the spectator who threw potato chips at Pogacar taken into custody

INFO LE PARISIEN. The young man who threw potato chips at Pogacar and Vingegaard was arrested by the gendarmes and placed in police custody for aggravated violence. After a night in the drunk tank, he will be questioned this Sunday.

It was a great afternoon for the Tour de France, with lots of festivities, meeting new people and cycling enthusiasts, until that stupid gesture."

Alexis, in his thirties and originally from Brittany, was located very close to the arch indicating the finish two kilometers into this Saturday's stage, which ended in Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d'Adet (Hautes-Pyrénnées).

Except that his day of festivities with his two buddies was slightly tarnished by the gesture of the spectator opposite him on the other side of the road. This other young man, born in 1992, with whom he had made friends in the afternoon, deliberately threw potato chips in the faces of Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates) and Jonas Vingegaard (Visma Lease a bike), as they passed in front of him. He was taken into police custody for aggravated assault and will be heard this Sunday.

He was unable to be taken into custody the day before, pending his sobering-up.

The image was captured by the television cameras following the two champions and quickly made the rounds on social networks, outraging many Internet users.

The CPA, the riders' union, announced via its president, Adam Hamsem, that it would take legal action against the author of this gesture. At the finish, Vingegaard, the two-time title-holder, said he couldn't "understand those who go to a bike race to throw potato chips".

Arrested by a policeman who saw the scene

This lack of understanding is also shared by Alexis, who realized after the riders had passed that he had immortalized the moment in a series of photos. Before seeing the outrage on social networks.

"He was with a bunch of very nice friends, cycling fans like us. We got to know each other well, talked about everything, cycling, Brittany and played shuffleboard," says the young man. But it was a very drunken afternoon".

According to Alexis, a nearby gendarme who saw the scene intervened immediately after the gesture against the Visma leader. Bob on his head, shirtless, and flying the flag for Brittany, he only saw these two riders at most.

Pogačar did 6.85 ᵉW/Kg for 27:50 min. For sea level normalised, it is 7.16 ᵉW/Kg. It is possibly the UAE superstar’s greatest climbing performance of all time and maybe the best in the 21st century.

I think the 6.9 is a little bunky. Both Jorgenson and Jonas were probably going 6.6 to 6.8 when they were on the front which means he was probably 6.3-6.6ish for at least half of the climb. I do think he was 6.9 after leaving Jonas, but a 6.6-6.7 average is different than 6.9. It also looked like Tadej was riding a power number once free of Jonas until the last 500m or so.

Tadej also made not of how much effort the team put in getting him food and cooling him off which I guess means they’re learning. The two Alps stages should be very hot stages, so I hope Jumbo try again. If not, I hope next year they keep both is bubble wrap until the Tour.

That was supersonic…of course he had the best lead out possible, but he smashed Patani’s time there.

What’s crazy is Jonas rode the 2nd fastest ever, also beating Patani.

Pogačar set a new climbing record on Plateau de Beille, beating Marco Pantani’s 1998 effort by 3 minutes and 44 seconds. Pogačar did not have the perfect conditions as it was a headwind, but his performance was the greatest in cycling history. Pantani had a 6.96-kilogramaluminium bike but had higher CdA and rolling resistance than Pogačar, but on an 8% climb aerodynamics, whilst important, are not the most crucial thing. It is watts that are the most important like Pogačar said earlier this Tour, and the UAE superstar had perhaps the strongest legs any cyclist has ever had.

Pogačar did 6.98 ᵉW/Kg for 39:50 min, which is by far the greatest climbing performance ever, taking into account conditions and the stage difficulty. Sea normalised power for this historic effort is 7.27 ᵉW/Kg. Pogačar’s adjusted altitude score was 696, which means this performance was equivalent to pushing 6.96 ᵉW/Kg for 60 minutes at sea level. Jonas Vingegaard, despite losing 68 seconds did the second-greatest climbing performance of all time. The Dane did 6.85 ᵉW/Kg for 40:58 min. His altitude score was the second highest in history with 685. Until today, Marco Pantani’s Alpe d’Huez in 1997 was the best in history. Remco Evenepoel lost 2:51 min on a climb to Pogačar, but his performance still was the 23rd best of all-time as he pushed 6.53 ᵉW/Kg for 42:41, which for sea level normalised is 6.81 ᵉW/Kg. Evenepoel’s performance still is the third best in the 21st century. Pogačar’s Stage 14 effort on Pla d’Adet is the fourth best.

Yates said he was going 480 watts following Jorgenson. I wouldn't be surprised if the 6.96 is low (that's a 460 watt average for 66 kg).

It also sounded like (from both Yates and a little bit of Tadej's interviews), that Jumbo almost had them (i.e. Almieda can't do 480 which is why he pulled off at the bottom and probably rode 460 up). I hope they try again on stage 20. Should be a much hotter day (Tadej said they were very vigilant about cooling and feeding him), so maybe they can get numbers down early and make it a race.

Jonas said post race that he rode one of the best stages of his life and lost a minute. Said he honestly can’t be disappointed, Tadej was just better.

Remco had a historically great day but for his first TdF he’s more focused on beating Almeida (for podium) & Rodriguez (for the White jersey.) Landa has been a massive asset for him but have to give him credit. He’s clearly the best of the rest.

Pogačar might have a bad day and lose the TdF - we’ve seen it in past Tours - but it’s difficult to see another way for Vingegaard to overcome the deficit and win it.

Pretty awesome time to be a cycling fan.

I believe they were riding into a head wind. Jorgenson didn't have a power meter so he probably rode too hot and blew early.

I don’t know, felt like Mateo did what he was there to do - push the climb hard enough to isolate the big 3 from the pretenders. Ended up with 6 in the group - Tadej, Jonas, & Remco, with Adam Yates, Jorgensen and Labda alongside. Top 3 + the top climber for each one. That was perfect.

From there it was up to Vingegaard v Pogačar.

Mateo was awesome. He weighs 65 kg, Yates is 58 kg. If we believe Yates when he says he was at 480 watts, that's 8.28 w/kg. That also means Meteo was at 8.28 x 65 = 538 watts. If you take into account wind you are somewhere between 550 and 600 watts. Mateo isn't 20% better than Yates. I think the plan was to whittle down the riders, but to do it over a longer period of time.

On this day in TdF history…

On July the 16th 1978 the Belgian rider Michel Pollentier won what should have been one of the most iconic stages of his impressive cycling career. Donned in the polka dot jersey as leader in the KOM-classification he won the queens stage of that year's Tour de France on top of the Alpe d'Huez .

But, at the anti-doping control after the stage medical examiner Alain Calvez found a very nervous Pollentier. "That's why I searched Pollentier, and at that moment I found a tube, which I pulled on. I also found a rubber 'pear' under his armpit that he could use to squeeze urine into the bottle through the tube."

Pollentier was disqualified and the stage was 'won' by Hennie Kuiper. From then on Michiel Pollentier had a new nickname: 'Peerke Pollentier'.

Later teammate Freddy Maertens told that it was not a 'pear' under his arm, but a rectally inserted condom...
