chipping and irons are so bad.

However.... Limekiln, hole 9, blue course, pretty even level the whole way, par 5

325 yard drive with 3 non friend witnesses :flex:

It was last hole of the day and I was driving it well so I said I'm either gonna lose the ball or hit my longest drive ever.

All I did was shift a little more weight back on my take away.

Played horribly but was probably my proudest golf moment.

God I wish I could fix my chipping and pitching.
Lean a little on your left side and keep your weight there - no weight shift ...try that

Believe me binky ive tried everything

I should distinguish...

Chipping is fine.

Pitching and any shot less than 75 yards is off the toe and a soft pop up ton the right. Drastically right...the entire way.

I've tried everything...over cooking my grip, closing the face.

I'm so lost. Is it possible it's the club? The 56 degree used to be my baby but it's become a complete mental block

Bender I can fix your chip easy.

Ball back

Weight little forward

Use an 8 or 9 iron

Don't use wrists

Eta nevermind

Ya sorry. My chipping is average. I use the putt with loft method and will hit a 5 wood up to a sand wedge to "putt" and it works awesome .

sounds like you're taking the clubhead back inside, getting to the top and moving it outside the original path and coming down steeply. i call it "looping."

try taking half-swings with same club - hands no higher than your hips - and concentrate on keeping the same plane back and through. also think about "sweeping" the ball at contact, instead of pinching or compressing. when you start making consistent contact, increase your the length of the swing.

Good idea quint, thanks.

I'm assuming too much wrist action, probably hinging them way too much like it's a 7 iron and not straightening them out in time.

So side bar.

I'm hitting my driver higher than normal and losing some yards. I thought maybe it was just age.

I'm teeing it up proper height. Half ball above club.

Maybe have ball too far back and not sweeping enough?

I'm pretty solid and consistent with it but have lost some yardage

I'm really only guessing it's going off the toe based on how right it goes.
So you aren't feeling the club trying to twist? If not, then it just sounds like the toe is open, not necessarily that the ball is going off the toe. Hard to say without seeing it though. Next time these things happen, just set your phone down to shoot a couple shots and post it. There's a good chance you'll even see what the issue is.

agree w/ Apple Jack - maybe stand a tiny bit closer to the ball.

also, when you mentioned a "soft pop up to the right" that makes me thing you're coming at the ball from a really steep (or perhaps steeper than normal) angle, so when you make contact it's going off the toe and you're losing distance. a "flatter" angle at contact, i.e. sweeping, might alleviate that.

i know that when i get steep, especially when trying to compress the ball and often when i'm swinging harder than i should, that's the result i get.

YMMV

a coupe Qs:

are you hitting the ball in the center of the clubface?

are you extending your arms through the contact zone?

are you getting good hip rotation?

are you sure you are aligned right? Many people have closed stances, especially with short irons. If your ball is starting way right and staying there (not slicing or hooking) then it's not your club face, it's typically alignment. My guess is that you subconsciously know you are aligned right, so you try to close the clubface down left, hence you are hitting it on the toe. My suggestion is to try opening your stance a bit (or at least ensure you are really squarely) for the shorter shots.

Tried opening my stand extremely wide today Smails. Same thing I thought but that made no difference :)

It's just infuriating when out there (maybe that's why I'm driving the ball so far this season...out of anger)

So I can hit my irons with moderate consistency, at least for me, but woods/driver are absolutely awful. And I mean bad as in holy #### where did my ball go, usually dead right, or yelling four at some poor ******* whose life is about to end.

Isnt your swing supposed to be the same for both clubs? Yes, I'm a novice.

not really.Woods take a way is slow and low. So in theory the turn and weight transfer is the same but your plane will be different as you are not hitting down on the ball with woods

82 today at Eagle Creek here in Orlando (par 73), a day after shooting a horrendous round in a 2 man scramble. One minor adjustment to swing and it all came back into focus. First chance to take the new Taylormade Mini-driver out, too: absolutely love this club! 250yds straight every time and pretty easy off the deck as well. So much easier to control than regular driver was, and can put some muscle behind it without worrying about slice or fade

I play right handed because my dad bought me right handed clubs.

Now that I suck as bad as ever I'm thinking I give the game a shot as a lefty. Can't be much worse.

Today's lesson: Don't play golf when hung over.

Went to the casino last night and drank far too much. Didn't feel that great today but wanted to play since I'll be out of town for the next month and unable to play. 3-putted the first 4 holes. :lmao:

Mostly held it together but had some a few bad holes. Only managed two pars with six GIR. The others were 3-putt bogeys.

On the positive side, I think I hit my irons better today because I didn't feel that great. My swing was a bit slower, just trying to make good contact and my distance wasn't affected at all.

If I can't get out this week, I won't play again until the last weekend in August. :(

I was hung over today. There is a fine line

hmmmm. hard to say, since you have a good grasp on the swing and game by what i've seen you post. maybe adjusting the degree on the Driver (if possible) would make a difference in gaining yardage and lower ball flight?

Spent a solid two hours chipping today at the practice green. After about a half hour of being all over the place, I had some tremendous improvement. I realized I needed to really focus on keeping my arms tight with my chest as I took the easy stroke. Doing so kept my arms moving together and prevented my wrists from breaking. Not only was I knocking them at the pin, but my bad hits would still get a decent roll and leave me with a makeable putt, where before the screw ups would go flying across and through the green.

I appreciate all the tips. Now comes the hard part in transferring it to the course.
Chipping was the best part of my game on Saturday

Was up and down on the rest of my game and we quit after 15 due to it getting late/slow play in front of us, was +19 after 15. Even if I finished bogey/bogey/double it would have been my best round of the season by 4 strokes which I attribute to the chipping improvement. Of course there was an easy par 3 coming up...but happy overall.

Shot my best round today. I've consistently been a 13 to 15 handicap over the past two years. I've never broken 80 before today. My best round had been 82. Shot a 75 today. The probability of that happening is ridiculously small.

Have to attribute it to School of Golf from this past week. I've struggled with hitting my irons straight for all five years that I've played. Took a GIANT leap forward after watching this week's episode. The activity they demonstrated was to put a ball in your right hand (right handed golfer), not a club. Make a backswing motion to the top, and then throw the ball in your right hand directly at the spot where the ball is sitting waiting to be hit. Holy crap. What a difference. I nutted just about every iron shot today with this motion. I've been great off the tee for some time, but just not accurate with the irons. Hoping this can be the start of a big step forward.

Allah Akbar, Praise Jesus, and all that good stuff.

There's not many other things that feel this good when you're a golf addict.

EDIT: Wanted to add the link to the tip that worked so well for me.

Release in the golf swing

So I get invited to play at a nice CC yesterday. One guy is a good friend of mine and I just met the other two, My friend is a 5-6 and I was told the other two were low single digit handicappers. I am a 14-15. All these guys are long hitters..so on the first tee I am a little nervous as I watch the first 3 guys rip long drives with draw. I can hit the ball far but lose accuracy when I over swing. I get up there thinking since the first fairway is somewhat wide without trouble I was going to try and crush one. With about a 110 MPH swing I take a mighty cut and totally whiff and almost fall down. :bag: I can`t remember the last time I whiffed. So I regroup and proceed to hit a 150 yard worm burner that squirted along the right rough.

My buddy is doubled over with laughter..I could tell the other guys wanted to laugh but were holding it in. There was another group standing just off the tee that were going off behind us laughing their asses off. Very humiliating start to say the least. Ended up with an 88. 45-43

Played Hartefeld National a week ago. That course was one of the nicest courses I've ever played. The tees were like putting greens. I felt bad hitting shots off of them. It was a very tough course to play if you've never played it before, though. I shot a 97, but a lot of my "good" shots turned out to be bad shots because I was aiming at the wrong place. Fun course, though.

I played Bella Vista last week, too, and that course is in amazing shape. Shot an 86. I love that course. One weird thing that happened was I play from the white tees. Came up to a par 4 and a ranger was at the tee. I hit my tee shot and it was right down the middle. I'm not a long hitter, never really have been. As I walk off the tee the ranger says, "If you're hitting like that, you shouldn't be playing from the whites." I laughed until I realized he seemed genuinely upset that I hit from the whites. We drove up to my ball, about 130 out and I hit it onto the green. The ranger had followed me up to my ball and when I hit the green he yelled to me, "That's why you shouldn't be playing from those tees! :hot: " He then sped away upset.

I was like  I have no clue why he was so upset.

You would think they would be ecstatic if everyone played from the red tees. Why would the marshal want players to play slower from the longer tees? It was so weird I was at a loss for words.

Maybe he meant you should be playing one back? The tees go Fazio, Black and then White. Maybe he meant you should have been playing the black tees and took it as a compliment.

I imploded yesterday.

Last 3 rounds nothing higher than an 80.

Yesterday was a not fun 89. Everything was horrible

He did mean to play one back. That's what I'm saying. And I did take it as a compliment at first, until I realized he was actually bothered and upset that I was playing the white tees instead of the black tees. Like I said, it was crazy because at first I thought he was joking. So when I laughed at what I thought was him joking around, it bothered him even more. Enough that he followed me to my next shot and gave me more crap because I was able to put it on the green it 2. I just didn't get why he was taking it as such a personal attack against him that I would be playing from the white tees.

Maybe he thought it would lead to you finishing holes quicker and putting unnecessary pressure on the guys in front of you? Spitballing here.

unless you were hitting balls into the group in front of you, and i'm sure you wern't, then i can't imagine why that guy was so upset about from what tee you were on. the whole Tee It Forward campaign is basically trying to get golfers to play from the correct tees, and the pro/marshall should be enforcing and encouraging this at the local level.

i would guess a large majority of weekend golfers are playing the wrong set of tees. and while i do understand wanting to be challenged on the course, 20+ handicappers probably shouldn't be playing from the tips. i know i'd rather be hitting 8i or 9i into Par 4s, rather than 5i or hybrid.

Went to the range with lefty 7 and 5 irons this weekend.. not bad. I may be on to something here.

What's also weird is that rangers should be promoting "play it forward" because it creates faster pace of play. So weird.

Have you considered playing cross-handed? Works for Josh Broadaway of the web.com tour.

I confess, I ####### love gimmicky team tournaments. Played in a five iron only scramble tourney on Saturday. Everyone on my team had a much lower handicap than I do yet I played out of my mind and was easily the best player there. Had two chip ins, hit several greens in regulation on my own, and putted better from inside ten feet than I do with my regular putter. I played a practice nine Friday and shot a 45 and think that I would have shot <90 if I had just been playing on my own with a five iron. These goofy tournaments just totally ease any negative swing shots or any mental demons corresponding to the holes that I would normally have (i.e. thinking to myself "you've gone OB right your last two rounds on this hole... you better hit it straight" then inevitably making a poor swing).

I played a guy who beat me with my 3 iron :bag: Full disclosure, he played on some mini tours when he was younger, but still. Talk about getting :own3d: He never let's me forget about that
