I think it is shiddy that Samuel L. Jackson's Lifetime Achievement Award wasn't aired.
too menacing...

Anyone seen Licorice Pizza or Nightmare Alley?  Two other films on my to watch list.
saw Nightmare Alley. liked it well enough, and i'm a big fan of the original. Tyrone Power was masterful & perfectly cast in that and Cooper had nowhere near the brilliance to him. fine otherwise

guess i didnt miss much...

Tomorrow Will Smith apologizes to Chris Rock, explains the thing briefly with his wife to provide people the slightest bit of his mindset, say he lost his mind, he has zero excuse, he snapped, apologize to Rock again.

The he should rent a yacht go to Bora Bora for about a month.

Oh God, are we going to be subject to the defiance tour or the apology tour?

I would say I can't believe I just witnessed that, but that's been coming to someone for a long time in these celebrities' minds.

That's part of the reason I'm done with Hollywood. Can't take a joke. Sheesh.

I think it'll be more a 'I'm sorry but this and but that' not really an apology tour.

So fawners can say 'he apologized!' when he didn't

I don’t think he apologizes to Rock and I don’t think he expects it. I love Chris Rock and his comedy but I wouldn’t be surprised if Will told him to lay off of her (from previous comments) and he purposely was poking the bear and had more lined up based on how he reacted. I think Will thought if he did nothing the next joke was about him doing nothing when she was banging someone else. And on the night he was expected to finally win, he just flipped out.

Reminds me of the Chapelle Show ‘When Keeping It Real Goes Wrong’ skits. Defends his wife but ruins the biggest night of his life. But I don’t think he regrets slapping him and I think Chris knew he deserved it.

Complicated.

The best decision would be for Will Smith to get his family and just walk out. Force the Academy to scramble to have someone do his acceptance speech for him.

There's a very old video of Woody Harrelson going beserk at an airport. He's shouting, "If you take pictures, take them of me, not my kids" Which I think is pretty understandable if that's the actual context behind it.

My take on this is Will Smith's mentality is "I'm the big superstar in the whole family, I'm the target, come after me, not my wife"

I don't agree with Will Smith, but I'm not always rational when it comes to my godson. Sometimes I wouldn't consider myself rational if something bad happens to one of my employees.

I suspect there may be a very thin line about jokes about things you can control and can't control. Mel Gibson was a target for Ricky Gervais, but no one forced him to drink and get caught saying a lot of Anti-Semetic stuff. What's happening to Jada Pinkett Smith might be beyond her actual control.

Comedians are given a pass most of the time for saying things right at the edge. The target was a black woman and mother, basically informally understood to be bisexual in that industry. In the age of identity politics.

I'd call it complicated. Still think Will Smith should have just left. Got up and walked out.

What's ironic is Chris Rock produced a documentary about black women and their hair. I remember he narrated it. I saw it. He was featured on Oprah for it, IIRC.

No excuse for what Smith did. It almost seemed like he was acting it looked so out-of-place and stupid.

Oh, you're right about this. You should see the complicated reactions on Twitter from the black politicians. They've had to delete their Tweets, but alas! -- fools -- someone was taking screenshots.

Read this tonight..

When Rock hosted the 2016 Oscars, he mocked Will and Jada, who had boycotted the event. “Jada got mad, she said she’s not coming. Doesn’t she have a TV show? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties — I wasn’t invited!” Rock added: “You get mad that Will was this good and didn’t get nominated” [for his role in "Concussion"]. “It’s also not fair that Will was paid $20 million to do 'Wild Wild West.'” So, yeah, I guess there’s some history there.

If Will Smith had done that to Dave Chappelle, Chappelle would be into his third uninterrupted hour of Jada jokes

:lmao:

The stupid thing is that we all know that battering a man on live tv during the most important awards show in the industry should end Smith’s career, but that it won’t.

Went to bed before the Will Smith stuff but after watching it now, that punch was definitely fake. Look at how Rock’s head is moving before he’s even “hit”. It was staged.

He's bracing to get smacked and flinching... you'd do the same thing

I saw it live. Thought it was staged at the time and still think that.  To me it looked the Rock was bracing for it and seriously what man slaps another guy in the face?   If you're that pissed you're going to be using your fist.

To me, a slap is a "gentleman's punch" in this context.

They're in tuxedos at a prestigious event... If Will went closed fist, this would be a lot worse, IMO.  Slap was definitely the best option.

Not to mention it's a bit more degrading to be have the taste slapped out of your mouth by another man, than to be punched by another man.

Will Smith has been very deliberate in crafting his image throughout his career. This is way outside of that image. He absolutely does not play the villain. If this was staged, there’s no way there wouldn’t be a reveal a day or 2 later. So if there is no reveal, then there’s no way it’s staged.

And I just can’t see him upstaging himself getting an Oscar. Biggest night of his professional career and he agrees to totally diminish it by faking an attack on Rock? No way.

IMO the reveal won't come for a while, just like the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction".

Smith went from laughing at the joke, to enraged and then back to laughing in a few minutes.  If his emotions turn that quickly he may have mental issues.

Exactly. And it was real, Rock would have had a different reaction. I think he would have been genuinely pissed instead of laughing it off.

Fake but it got the desired affect. People are talking about the Oscars where before no one knew it cared that they were even on.

Seeing the replay of it, it wasn’t a very good looking slap from Will, like he didn’t know how to deliver one.

Years ago, I loved Will Smith as he described how much he regretted the failure of his first marriage.  He 'hinted' it was because he wasn't faithful.   Then with tears in his eyes, he said he was determined that his 'new marriage' (To Jadda) would last.

Almost immediately, I heard he was sleeping around.  A few years later it was leaked they had/have an open marriage.

Lost respect for him.  I still watched his movies even though I didn't care for him.

People willing let entertainers into their lives each day.  Many people will not let someone in who behaves as he did last night.

I will continue to watch because I have watched his films after losing respect for him as a man a long time ago.  When you don't care for an entertainer, you judge there work differently because you are not 'charmed' by them.

Will Smith lost a lot last night, more than people realize.

If it was fake, Rock was the best actor in the building. He was completely off his game after the slap.

Near zero chance it was staged.
This.

Honestly Will's actions/look once he sat back down are what sealed it for me. This is legit.

I dunno. He upstaged and diminished himself anyway.

If real, it should have started with Chris Rock showing some discretion. And Smith could have proven his point with a finger in the chest.

I lean toward "staged".

Regardless, it's just more Hollywood bizzareness.

I didn't know about Jada's indiscretions (I think I just saw with one of the kid's friends or something? )   I wonder if that was what Rock was mulling over saying when he said something like "I could...."

Anyway, if it didn't come 100% from Rock that it's cool, he's not doing anything, etc..   I still don't get get how Smith was allowed to just chill there in the audience for the rest of the show... like I said last night - I guess because that was one that was expected and he seemed to be a shoo-in for?   Hollywood didn't want to go on without that moment?

That is the most disturbing part IMHO.  He should have been removed.  No one should be able to do what he did and then receive an award.

Think about how famous you have to be to walk onto the stage at the Oscars, slap the presenter in the face, sit back down, curse loudly at him twice, and not get kicked out or stopped

If that was staged then both of them need to get a 2023 Oscar for it.

Not defending Will Smith at all but making jokes about one’s wife regarding her hair which I am sure is very personal to her doesn’t seem very funny. Kind of like making fun of someone being disfigured or dealing with a disease. Crazy stuff but be nice for comedians to respect certain things about people. I guess it’s funny to see comedians show there is no place or subject they won’t make fun of? But when you are in the entertainment industry you need to be thicker skinned and deal with it I guess.

Have you heard the jokes Ricky Gervais made previously?
