***Official Academy Awards Discussion Thread*** - Anora is the Big Winner (1 Viewer)

staged.

the oscars were/are in the toilet.  utterly failing as a show.  has any moment in oscar history been talked about more?   Brando's stand in?  it's hollywood baby!!

and this will have zero impact on will smith's career.

What kind of pull does Bill Murray have to get a quasi-monologue in the middle of “In Memorium” for Ivan Reitman?
Less than Jamie Lee Curtis who got to give monologue with a dog.

There's no way this was faked or staged. Will Smith had zero to gain from doing that.
If it was a bit, they would have revealed it when Will won. There is no way this was planned.

After Joaquin Phoenix and Will Smith's wacko acceptance speeches, maybe they should just limit the speeches to 15 seconds or skip them entirely?    :excited:
Smith's speech might be the highest rated piece of non-sports TV in years. It was uncomfortable but incredible to see such a real moment like that.

Pretty good chance Chris Rock did not write it. Oscars writers come up with most of the jokes for the broadcast.
He still said it though, they rehearse. He had a chance to say no.

2) I know it’s been part of the show for a while and it was to be expected, but IMO, roasting celebs at the biggest award show of the year is pretty dumb. Can you imagine going to the most prestigious awards show of your industry and the MC for the night starts roasting individuals and getting really personal? Seems like something implemented to please the public and take celebs down a notch during a self-congratulatory ceremony. My solution? Get rid of the roast and just stop televising the ceremony. Make it an industry thing.
I agree the roasts are ridiculous and have gotten pretty mean. It's tacky and makes no sense. They need to focus on movies and giving awards and not turning it into a variety show.

Why would Will Smith do this?

I'm 34.  Grew up in the 90's.  Will Smith is one of my All-time Favorite entertainers.  I've seen every episode of the Fresh Prince multiple times.  I bought his CD's.  I've seen more of his movies than I can count.  I have always thought very highly of Will Smith.

Last night was a disgrace.  Will laughs at the joke.  Laughing at it="I find this acceptable"  His natural reaction/emotion was "this is ok."  Then he realizes his wife didn't love it.  So he resorts to violence.  And this is what bothers me the most.  He didn't do it because Chris Rock crossed a line in his eyes.  He did it to "prove himself" to his wife.

Some people are saying comedians have deserved this for a long time.  And I find that preposterous.  It's like going to a baseball game and being mad you got hit by a foul ball.  You know what you're getting yourself into when you buy the ticket.  If you don't want to be made fun of by comedians--don't go where they are--and that includes these celebrity award shows.  Regardless, I don't find a comedian poking fun at someone's appearance something that makes violence acceptable.

I find it even more preposterous in defense of a celebrity with the status of Will Smith.  Will Smith is in that icon category.  Everyone and their grandma knows Will Smith from something.  Your entire life is lived under a microscope.  Your family is constantly being photographed and written about.  Will has been to countless award shows where other people are made fun of.  And Jada isn't JUST Will's wife.  She's done some acting of her own.  She's developed a following.  So this isn't a new experience to the Smith's.

People talk about "You're free to say whatever you want, but not free of the consequences."  Well, sure.  But a comedian standing on stage talking about your appearance is a lot different than someone walking up face to face with your wife and saying something ugly.  The whole world knows it's a joke.  There is no personal attack here.  And so--are we really ok with slaps?  What about fists?  Brass knuckles?  Knives?  Guns?  Where do we draw the line on what sort of retaliation is ok when someone calls your wife bald?

He called her bald.  She's losing her hair.  From alopecia.  If the worst thing you get from Chris Rock is that you don't have hair--when you in fact don't have hair--you're alright.  Maybe you don't feel like you're alright.  But it doesn't warrant violence.  It's not a strike worthy offense.  "Well what is a strike worthy offense?"  Not a lot of stuff.  I don't know.  But I'm confident that this isn't.  If a comedian called my wife bald--I would not even consider striking him.  And I don't think that makes me a bad husband or a bad "protector."

Which brings me to my final point.  That speech.  Will didn't say he was wrong or sorry.  He's a vessel of love.  He's a protector.  He's channeling his inner Richard Williams.  GTFO of here with that garbage.  You thought you looked bad in front of your wife after you laughed at a joke she didn't like, so you struck a guy that is smaller than you.  As someone else said, let's have the Rock make the same joke next year and see how much protecting Will wants to do.

I thought the roasts last night were fairly tepid.  I think they were purposely going in this direction after the Ricky Gervaise oscars.

Excellent Post.  I think 75% of the people who watched feel the exact same.

Why would Will Smith do this?
to be the man that saved the oscars.  to give that gift back to an industry that has made him incredibly wealthy.  i grew up in LA.  the oscars used to be a BIG deal.  now?  not so much.  they are today.  and next years ratings will be through the roof.

it's all stupid.

Agreed, fairly tepid but there were still jokes about Leo's girlfriends, Jada and Will's marriage, the top nominated film being boring, etc. It just seems tacky and to be the opposite of what the show should be doing.

Makes no sense at all. Smith has tried so hard to be taken seriously as an actor and try to win an Oscar. He finally is going to win partly as a lifetime achievement award and for being such a good guy...so he completely distracts from all of that by staging several moments that paint him as unhinged and dangerous? That makes absolute zero sense.

How could it be anything but considering the hosting choices?

Only way it could have been worse would be to tab Seth Rogen & James Franco and have Judd Apatow write it.

man, can you imagine if one of rock or smith were white….?  i think our country would literally explode today.

but i never thought i’d have to think that rock was classier than smith.

They did have Franco host once and he was the single worst host ever too. I agree though, they are choosing the direction for the show. It's absolutely on ABC and the Academy for their choices.

he's always wanted to be perceived as a bad ###.  he's been annoyed for a long time that all of his "rapper, street cred" went out the window, if he ever really had any, a looooong time ago.  allegedly, he took the role in suicide squad, in part, because he was tired of playing the good guy.

smith needs nothing from hollywood.  he's a multi multi millionaire.  he can do whatever he wants going forward.  he was a huge draw 2 days ago.  and i'd wager that he's a bigger draw today.

Don't see anyway Will Smith signs up for this. He looks like a dope / unhinged. Smith has this on him forever now, will be ripped by comedians for some time and there is a lot more meat there.

Doubt this really would save anything in regards to The Oscars, but this is definitely one of the weirdest moments in the history of this event.

He knew. This has been known for years, and Rock has made jokes about the two of them before.
My thoughts last night were a swirl of:

  • he knows, but it's not cancer or life threatening
  • the Smith's have all the power and money in the world, she has access to treatments, wigs, whatever - she has to have some level of self confidence and acceptance to wear her hair like that
  • they've had beef before, and Rock couldn't help but take a shot on a big night - it's what comedians do and why you invite Rock to do anything.

We live in an age where pretty much every single piece of media produced in the past century is available on demand, and people still spend their time watching awards shows.
Because lost in that is conversation. It's rare now for events to happen that almost everyone can share in and talk about. The water cooler effect if you will. I've also seen almost all the movies nominated so I like to see it from that end but I think many watch because it's something to talk about not.

I think it did a massive disservice to the show and is one of the worst things to ever happen to it. Sure ratings are down but that is network TV. Ratings are down for everything that isn't NFL football. The Oscars still draw more viewers than any other award show. Things are weird with the pandemic year but in 20202 The Oscars were the 8th most watched TV event of the year. There was only 1 non-football event ahead of them.

That there are so many options for entertainment now and that movies are not the pinnacle in this form any more is what has made this award show much less an event.

i don't think this affects smith's career much at all.  no publicity is bad publicity.  plus, he gets to do the talk show circuit now.  do the oprah special where he cries and jada holds his hand.

and you're correct, this will not save the oscars.  it will help next year and maaayyybe beyond that a year or two.

Isn't being one of the greatest action stars of all time bad ### already? There is one thing money can't buy and it is image/reputation. Much of America now considers him toxic and mentally unwell. I don't think that is something a nearly 60 year old man who has very carefully crafted a career would do. He just threw his lifelong reputation out of the window so The Oscar TV show got a little ratings bump?

Reitman’s refugee origin story has some resonance right now, so maybe it was the story first and then Bill Murray was just who they got to tell it.
Murray starred in Meatball’s, Stripes, Ghostbuster’s 1&2. It appears to me Reitman & Murray were pretty tight. Certainly a much closer connection between them than P.Diddy to The Godfather.

i don't think the producers/directors staged it.  think janet jackson Super Bowl.  same thing

Also lost in all of this is how hilarious the countdowns they let the internet decide. The all time cheers moment was Flash entering the speed zone and the fan favorite film of the year was Army of the Dead.

This would have been the equivalent of following up Emma Thompson’s Oscar win for Sense and Sensibility in 1996 with a montage of Timecop.
So bad.  I didn't know that they let the internet vote.  I thought it was a decent idea in general on their part to include something like that and throw a bone to more popular movies, but come on - at least decide on what to show internally and highlight great movies that might have gone unawarded before or something.

Seeing these countdowns with Army of the Dead and The Flash did provide some laughs for me though.

That wasn't planned (at least not how it turned out) and that basically ended Janet's career. Not sure why Will would want to be part another incident like that.

A total failure to understand how the internet works. The internet is full of stupid Zack Snyder fanboys who will just keep voting over and over and over.

does anyone think tom cruise is bad ###?  he's bad ### at making money.  and has made some some pretty cool movies.  bad ###?  no.  and i've met him.  LAM!!

The other thing I didn't like, but it was a reaction to my 7yos reaction, was the version of We Don't Talk About Bruno.   She was brushing her teeth b/c we had already seen the song nominated perform and see Encanto win.  They started in, and I called her in.  She was excited for about 1min then just stared at the TV in disbelief and said "I don't get it".      Not a fan of the rapping and morphing of the music, I guess.

I didn't mind the music of the In Memoriam, but my observation was that it was distracting to have the performers right in front of the screen and moving so much.   Just thought it was an odd choice to take focus off the people we lost last year.

you think the JJ bit wasn't planned?   :lmao:

eta:  her career was already mostly over at that point.

Hold on, wait... some of you actually watched this live last night?
Us movie nerds are going to movie nerd.   I don't listen to every word, but I have it on most years, especially if I put in some effort to watch most of the movies and have an opinion about what should win.

Why do you think it was planned? You are the one presenting the story  that is contradictory to what everyone involved has said.
the JJ bit?  because i have eyes and a brain in my head.

last night?  because i'm a jaded realist.  no reason for it to have occurred otherwise.  it's just my opinion.  much like the incident, who cares?

The theory behind it is literally insane.

We live in an age where pretty much every single piece of media produced in the past century is available on demand, and people still spend their time watching awards shows.
Used to be, a live event like the Oscars was the only time you could see a famous actor being 'themselves' in a way not managed by publicists, studio marketing teams, or other media-managed ways. It was a 'clean' version of the tabloids/paparazzi glimpse of someone's actual persona. You'd actually get the real Gregory Peck or Alfred Hitchcock or Jack Benny in your living room, that was a novelty.

Now that every celebrity is posting selfies daily on instagram, tweets every thought in their head, and you know not only everything about their 'real' selves, but, are a party to all their family drama, know the names of all their kids, etc., there's no reason for an 'event' like the Oscars anymore. It's not serving any purpose for the audience.

The business enterprise I work for distributed three of the nominated films, so I had a rooting interest and was watching. But even without that, I’d watch if only to see if my predictions bear out.

Wanna know what *real* privilege looks like?

Being able to assault someone like that, then being able to just walk back to your seat, sit down, fold your legs like nothing happened.

Or negligently firing a gun at point blank range at someone that ends up killing them but having zero charges pressed.

Must be nice.

Kind of sad how everything has gotten overshadowed. Questlove’s win and acceptance speech for Summer of Soul came as everyone watching was trying to figure out what the heck just happened. And CODA’s big win now looking more like a footnote to the evening.
