***Official Academy Awards Discussion Thread*** - Anora is the Big Winner (1 Viewer)

Also have to keep in mind that this was also very much about the Oscars a couple years ago. Jada boycotted for the #OscarsSoWhite thing. Rock made a joke that it’s not a boycott when you weren’t invited in the first place. Jada and Will took deep offense to that and I guess there has been some beef between them for a couple years.
So they didn’t discuss this “beef” for years?  There are many stories of Will being a decent, level headed guy (before all this, of course). You would think they would be at the same event at some point. Will could have easily pulled Chris aside and said “Hey Chris, listen, Jada is a little sensitive with your jokes. Can you leave her out of your routine  going forward please?”

REASON #798 THAT THIS WAS STAGED

MODS: move this thread to the Staged forum peas

Theory going around that the Oscars was sponsored by Pfizer (visuals proving it) and Pfizer has a new Alopecia medicine hitting the market soon.   The Alopecia awareness probably increased 1,000%+ overnight.

Coincidence?

My prediction is that Smith is banned from the Oscars next year.

Probably just banned from attending, maybe banned from receiving any awards..

Ok so let’s say your scenario played out exactly as you said and Will expressed himself and Rock hears him out. Smith walked away feeling like Rock was on the same page and wasn’t going to make fun of Jada anymore.

How would he feel if Rock cracked another joke about Jada on TV? To be honest that would make me more upset.

Ahhhh... I didn't know this. Where is Bill Gates at in all this????????  :D

Amazing how this small incident has become a microcosm for every part of the National mental breakdown happening in this country. Maybe that wasn't even Will Smith but was JFK Jr in blackface?

BS.  You boycott the show because of your own self importance around not being nominated and you are going to get roasted.  The difference was those 2 jokes were funny in 2016. This one wasn’t.

There's also this thing about Black women and their hair being an important part of them culturally. As a black man Rock should've known better with that. Some are suggesting he may not have wrote the joke and someone fed him lines to read. I could believe that too.

*jokes about hair loss have been fine for decades.  Seems like it’s up for debate whether Chris knew - I assume he did but who knows.  But even if he did that may make him a jerk in some minds but it still doesn’t justify violence.

When it comes to black women it's different. They take great pride in their hair from a cultural standpoint. As I explained above Chris should know better and he did a documentary on this too Chris Rock does documentary on hair culture

It’s amazing how much the world has changed in the last 40 years.  Back when I was growing up it was a sign of love when you poked fun at someone.  My crowd was brutal.  Nothing was off limits.  One of the guys in our crew got into a bad car accident and had limited use of his arms and even that was joked about.  The fattest guy in our class used to tell fat jokes about himself.  He was hilarious.  I’m not saying that world was better or worse than today’s world, just saying it was different.  Very different.

People were also pretty racist and ignorant back 4Os yrs ago too. So stuff that was executable now especially in terms of race, sexual. orientation etc has no place in todays world that is more accepting of that. Unfortunately some people don't understand that and people are sick and tired of the copout "that it's comedy". You can't hide your racism, misogyny and bigotry behind that excuse any longer.

People are only upset it's being held accountable for now. I think that says more about the people upset about the accountability though.

I guess my final view is that many of the responses triggered by this were worse than what actually happened. What happened wasn’t that weird or bad outside of the fact it happened on a live major TV broadcast.

Ultimately, the joke wasn’t that bad. Yet still it makes one wonder why these people are invited to receive an industry award and then have their loved ones mocked publicly? Will’s response was over the top but it was also a slap. Nobody was hurt. Honestly the weirdest part was the speech after.

I would agree, we made fun of each other pretty hard. However, if you made fun of someone’s mom or sister or girlfriend the temperature of the conversation changed very quickly and sometimes fists were thrown.

I am sure there are a lot of people who don't cling to social media or follow what the Smiths are talking about.    Chris Rock might be one of those people who has better things to do, it's certainly within the realm of possibilities.

I can't take that as an excuse. These guys have PR teams and people always looking at stuff for them especially Chris Rock. He literally has a team hired to get him the latest stuff to form jokes and such. Like you stated the Smith's are high profile celebs. Everyone knows everything in Hollywood especially A listers. For Rock to not know anything about this I find it very hard.

I had a friend who lived in LA who was a realtor for a big firm that dealt with big clients from music, movies, to high end companies just to give you a base on clientele. She was showing one client a home and the whole thing was kept private. Somehow someone else knew about this and posted all over their social media. Within the hour numerous people knew about it and the clients withdrew their offer.

I just find this hard to believe Rock knew nothing about this like I said he also did a documentary recently on Black culture in terms of hair.

Lol.  Oh brother.  You have NO IDEA what it was like growing up in the 60s and 70s when fights were commonplace.  There were rules and everyone knew them.  I thought everyone grew up like that and 'knew the rules'.

Will Smith is a punk.  He walked up to a much smaller man with his ARMS BEHIND HIS BACK showing zero aggression in front of a huge crowd and attacked him.

Children fight, at some point you stop because you grow up and realize that you don't want to hurt anyone.  Any adult fight is humiliating.  No one looks good if two angry ADULT idiots throw down.  Will attacked a much smaller person who showed no signs of aggression.

Talk about accountability, he wouldn't have gotten away with it back in the day.  You have no idea.

What's up boomer!!! Typical back in my day... Let me guess you're one of those who also says lace up your boot straps and suck it up there are jobs out there? What was good back in the day isn't any longer. Society changes. My dad's father use to beat him and his brothers with a belt constantly to the point they bled. If someone did that today they'd be charged with chid abuse. Just because it was fine back in the day doesn't mean it's good now

There's been other stuff going on besides that for awhile. Not sure there was stuff said privately they found out about that Chris said or what. However Chris has always been like this. He's the type of guy who will turn on his best friend in an instant.

So its a combination of a lot of things and Sunday just put it over the top I think for Will.

So what you are saying is that Comedy is completely dead.

Because as long as I have been alive great adult comedy......there are no boundaries and we made fun of anything and everything. Nothing was off-limits.

But in todays completely ****fied world we live in.......real good dirty, adult comedy is freaking dead. Black Humor is dead (and I am not talking about Afro American humor.....I am talking black/dark humor).

Gotcha.

Because if we joke about all this stuff we are racists.......gotcha. So all comedians white, black, asian are hiding their racism behind the disguise of comedy? And so are we? Am I reading you right? I mean yes...of course we know there are racists in the world.....

I simply think this is all horse **it. I mean really?

Will Smiths actions were absolutely out of line.....far more than the dumb flat joke Chris Rock made about the GI Jane look on Jada. Chris Rock is a comedian.....and everyone knows when you sit in the front row at the Oscars you are fair game for some light hearted roasting. And by the way Jada decided to shave her head.....she has not gone completely bald. And it is well known all these Hollywood actresses wear extensions, wigs and Afro-American women have weaves you would never even blink at. But Jada decided to go with the “GI Jane” look. See where I am going with this? She does not have some life threatening condition. The joke itself was weak......but it deserved that reaction from Will Smith in front of 10’s of millions of viewers? Come on man.

Seriously.....this is exactly what is wrong with our society today. No one can take a freaking joke anymore and here we are.

Will Smith was 100% wrong in his actions. Completely out of line. He acted like a 14 year old in middle school when his mama got made fun of in a “your momma” joke.

There is zero defense for the actions he took in that moment. Right or wrong on Chris Rocks joke is simply not the point. What Will did was an incredibly bad decision.

I am glad he apologized. Because I really like his movies and work and I genuinely feel he is a great human being. He made a huge mistake and his image long term may take a big hit.

Will actually did say this to Chris awhile back during 16. Can't find the actual article but if you look on social media numerious people have mentioned it as well. Here's a breakdown from rolling stone on the timeline of all of this Timeline of Rock and SMith's beef. 2 Best friends now enemies.

I could see them both being banned next year or Rock not being invited. More so to keep cooler heads and not have the controversy brought up. You might have someone joke about hoping not to be hit this year but other then that probably nothing else

You’ve spent countless posts defending Will, calling people Boomers and explaining how Rock crossed a line.  Maybe try having one post about the real villain in this - the guy who assaulted someone on live Television.

Literally this. He expressed himself sometime after 16 OSCARS but no one knows if it was because of the joke at the award or something else. Several insiders in tabloids have hinted on possible other issues and I've heard from my friends out there that it's quiet possible and have heard stuff too. But wouldn't go into detail as they didn't want to spread anything that maybe false.    At the time the Smith's took the OSCAR jokes as whatever. Theres been rumors of Rock talking behind their backs, making jokes privately to people they don't get along with about their marriage and other things etc. However this is all rumors but I can say I wouldn't trust Chris Rock and he's an absolute snake just from people who know him. Even people who are friendly with the guy have said things.

Denzel Washington went over to ask Will if he was oK and apparently gave him a pretty emotional talking to which I'm sure is why the speech felt weird. Will mentioned part of what Denzel said in his speech which was later confirmed that it was Denzel who said something. Reports and video online showed during commercial break Denzel talking to Will and Jada in what looked more like checking up on them.

You mean a guy standing up for his wife? Honestly if a friend of mine and I were somewhere and someone took their wife or girlfriend and they did nothing evening pushing them I'd think differently of them. Every women should want their partner to stand up for them at a time of need even if it has to get unfortunately physical because unfortunately "please sir don't do that" doesn't work all the time.

I get it. Emotional roller coaster. On the verge of the peak moment of his career and public crowning, something he worked decades for. Also angry about his wife being insulted, feeling of satisfaction hitting Rock and then WTF did I just do to my career? Just an insane flurry of emotions. I get why he was kind of unhinged in his speech, it was just so rare to see that.

Oscars producer confirmed Rock’s GI Jane joke was ad-libbed.

Well there goes people's excuses it was written for him. But I'm sure some will feel like the Oscars are trying to make themselves not part of the problem. Only people who know it wasn't ad libbbed are Rock the producer and writer though.

So you really think this was one of those times where words wouldn't have been more effective than a physical confrontation?

And you are coming at others with "boomer"?

I'd bet this is the real reason he went all slappy.

In my (thank goodness very limited) exposure to someone who is somewhat prone to violent physical and/or verbal outbursts, the biggest trigger is their being embarrassed of something they are being called out for or know they will be called out for.
i wish the camera was on him to see the transition from laughing it up with everyone else to #### I better get up and defend her honor.

Re striking a non-aggressive man in the face in response to a joke of this nature, I’m pretty certain my wife would prefer that I (a) not commit a crime; (b) not get arrested; and (c) not get my ### beat. This is primarily because she (1) understands what an overreaction is; (2) cares more about me than some stupid jerk; and (3) doesn’t need me to go all Neanderthal to “protect her honor.”

My wife would be beyond IRATE with me if I did this.

Yeah - My wife’s reaction to it was that Will Smith has “mental issues” and should have been thrown out.

Boomer mentality at best. Comedy has changed. People need to get with the program and stop living in the past. What was fine 3O yrs ago sometimes isn't fine now. People just don't like the accountability aspect of this.

Rock is lucky all he got was slapped. Some other guy he gets punched. Make that joke about Beyounce nd Jay Z  might have a 9MM instead to deal with for him. You don't disrespect a man's family especially his wife. Comedians think they are excepted from the rules when they aren't and use the "it's part of the act" constantly. Chris Rock made a cheap joke to get cheap laughs in poor taste. It's no different then the white comedian dropping the N bomb in his jokes and someone confronting him. He goes "It's part of the act".
Wow, really? I have to strongly disagree with you on this point.
