Really?

The Oscars are LOVING this right now.  It's the most publicity and exposure in years...maybe ever.   They don't want this to go away and will likely do what they can to make sure both of them are there next year to get the chatter going again.  In their perfect scenario, both Smith and Rock will be at odds over the next year and somehow get them to attend and make up/apologize a year from now at next year's awards.   I wouldn't be at all surprised if Chris Rock was next year's host.  Ratings would be huge.

Everyone is making this out to be MUCH more than it really was.   A timid joke about a woman's shaved head (which hit a nerve because of a non-deadly skin condition), a husband desperate for his wife's approval, a SLAP (not a punch) that hardly moved the receiver, that desperate husband with some swearing, and the guy who got slapped handling it as perfectly as he could have after the slap by not going scorched earth on the slapper (and he clearly had the verbal ammo to do it...and literally made it known that he could verbally destroy him in that moment, but wasn't going to do it).   This really wasn't that big of a deal, other than the shock factor of it happening between two A-List celebrities.

It was at the Oscars, not at a bar.  Part of the show is a bit of roasting by the comedians.  Chris Rock was zero threat to Will or his wife.

Again I'm pretty sick of people using it's comedians and comedy. It's just a copout at this point. Usually people agree to being roasted prior. shows like this also have pre agreed to scripts, people agree on whats good and whats not. Oscars already admitted what Rock did wasn't scripted. There's also been numerious reports where Will respectively asked Chris to keep his wife out of his routines. 

Again Let me know how you'd feel if you thought I was disrespecting you and your wife. You come up to me saying hey this is disrespectful to us please stop. You go back to doing your thing. Then a few yrs later we're together and I'm disrespectful again and continue to ignore your cute little " please sir stop this." Let me know how that feels. 

That's exactly what Chris Rock did here.

You are essentially saying if someone crosses the line with speech, physical violence is justified.  Where is the line?  Who chooses what's offensive and what's not?  Think about the implications of your opinion and recognize that using physical violence to punish someone for offensive speech is against the law, and next to impossible to define for a society.

I'm more so saying being nice about it isn't always going to happen. Sometimes physicality is needed to an extent. You may not have to pulverize them but sometimes just asserting yourself as physically dominate lessens the situation. Bullies will keep being bullies until you stand up to them. They'll see how far they can push it. Most hate confrontation so being nice and please stop isn't going to work

My REAL opinion on the Will Smith / Chris Rock debacle…

Yes, I have been joking right along with everyone about this, but how I really feel is probably a little different. What happened is important because it has a social impact, like it or not. It says something about “who we are or who we have become”.

Jada can not control what is going on with her condition. Let’s get that out of the way. So, she was strong and brave and rocked that look in front of the whole world. Bottom line, when a woman is wearing her hair that short, it’s usually not for fashion, she is usually going through something. Rock knew this. I don’t care what he says. I also don’t care what the rest of their personal life entails. This was a moment in time. Chris Rock made fun of her. Was it, “Just a joke” as many of you love to say? More like bullied in front of the world for the sake of a laugh, I think.

Most of the people talking about how the world is “Too sensitive” now and too many people are “Offended at everything” are usually the same people who would like to get back to getting away with jokes that are bigoted, racist or insensitive. Now, clearly Chris Rock’s intended joke wasn’t racist, but it was insensitive. Insensitive because this is not Jada’s choice. It’s like making fun of anyone who has an affliction. Too sensitive? As long as it isn’t you, I guess it’s just the world being too sensitive? On the other hand, yeah, we have gotten too sensitive. I’ll get back to that…

A comedian who is around long enough will eventually cross the line unintentionally. Ever since a joke about someone slipping on a banana peal, someone is usually at the butt end of a joke. I am not… Let me say this loudly for the people in the back… I am NOT for censorship! However, what you say and do will be judged by the population at large. So, let the chips fall as they may. It’s the “Bar room theory”. People generally act and talk differently at church than they do at a bar. It’s called, “Scruples”. In comedy, it’s called, “Timing”. I’m sorry, wrap what Chris Rock said in a Joke Wrapper all you want, but it was bad timing and was disrespectful. He was being a ####.

So, yeah, we as a culture are way too sensitive. Yes, we are. However, we created this monster. I happen to love Howard Stern, but about the time Stern became famous it also became a “thing” to take the piss outta people and publicly humiliate them…especially celebrities. Why? Well, they are having too much damn fun while the rest of us grind it out everyday. Damn pampered, elitists! Right? Money for nothin’ and your chicks for free! Screw celebs and their opinions! Ricky Gervais for President! Let’s put these people on a pedestal and then demolish them! They don’t have feelings, right? ####, it comes with the territory!

Now, are there some elitist celebs that need the piss taken outta them? Of course. Are there some non-celebs that deserve the piss taken outta them? Yep! But, they aren’t on a pedestal so they aren’t ever going to be exposed like a celeb. Your next door Karen probably won’t ever get exposed. So, what are comedians supposed to talk about if they are always walking on egg shells? Well, it comes with the territory bro, remember? Yeah, comedians are celebs too and just because they make fun of people doesn’t mean they too don’t deserve to get the piss taken out of them. Just like the rest of us.

If I am with friends at a bar and I am telling jokes, (I freakin’ love jokes, by the way) and it goes too far, someone will put me into check. This is just how it is no matter if you do this professionally or not. When you are made fun of because of something you can’t help or because you are marginalized for some other reason, it’s not always funny, people! Maybe we have become, dare I say, too insensitive? Maybe it’s the other way around? Maybe we have pushed the boundaries so far that don’t know how to reel it back in? Or maybe we are all just too sensitive?

I wish Will Smith had walked up to Chris Rock and whispered in his ear something like, “You crossed the line and that was **** move”, or something like that. I think it would have been as impactful. I don’t really think someone should get slapped publicly, and wouldn’t teach my kids that. However, I understand standing up for family. If you made fun of one of my children I’d have no filter. Sorry. Judge away! I don’t care!

So, I think Rock was being a #### and I think Smith was out of line for taking it that far. That’s my bottom line for anyone who gives a crap about what I think. You must care. Well, you are reading this, right?

West Philly doesn't play around.  I once stumbled drunk out of a bar on Lancaster Ave and two teens approached, wanting to be friends.  One later stole a nickel bag and I lectured the other on "hanging out with trash."  Little did I know, the thief was spinning the block and he caught me good from behind.  It was pretty funny but it definitely would have been funnier if it happened to someone else.

Were you even around during the 70’s and 80’s?  I can only speak from my own perspective  (a white Gen X’er living in the suburbs of Hartford, CT) but race relations were a whole lot better back in the mid 80’s.  And we laughed a lot more.

Right, there were some great movies and performances. Dune was an incredible accomplishment. Might be the best sounding movie to date. 

 
Chris Rock did really well under the circumstances of just getting hit but I do feel like it was a real missed opportunity to have a killer joke in a clip that goes viral.

I’ve only been thinking about this for a minute and I’m high so these are probably lame but the best I’ve come up with so far are “I really didn’t know that’s what getting jiggy with it was” and “the reviews for GI Jane 2 are already in and they are not good.”
