So since I don't care all that much, I have no idea.

What does quitting the academy actually mean?

He can't win any more awards? He can't act?

Or is it just a nothing burger

It appears that quitting the Academy means giving up his right to vote on awards, but he can still be nominated. Really taking a step in apology, huh?

Demand and prices for tickets to Chris Rock’s comedy tour have surged since he was slapped by Will Smith at the Oscars on Sunday night, a report said.

Tickets prices for the tour, which includes stops in 30 North American cities, rose from a minimum of $46 per ticket on March 18 to a whopping minimum of $341 on secondary market platform TickPick since the Academy Awards drama, Variety reported.

TickPick also said that from Sunday night through Monday the company sold more tickets to the comedian’s tour than they did all of the past month.

Sure they have surged in the short term.  But what about a year or 5 down the road?  People obviously are going so they can witness his joint by joint take down of Will smith in person.  It could potentially be epic…it might never happen.  But once it does, Chris goes back to being Chris and he’s now got this baggage.

Lol, what baggage?!   In the meantime he makes a couple million dollars more over the next couple of years that he wouldn’t have prior.  Poor Chris.

Wow you really have a whacked sense of justice.  Whatever.  I never really liked you as a poster anyway.  For too materialist and superficial to be a man I’d take seriously. 

 
this really seems to be a non issue.  in our society, we don’t care about bad deeds.  we love watching train wrecks.  smith and rock both make out like bandits and we wind up mildly caring about elitists dueling with one another.  this is simply rich people problems.

Hollywood has a track record of black listing people for good and bad reasons. This is certainly one of those.   He might be done.

If I spent my career trying to make my mark in in the history books of comedy, but the thing I will most be remembered for is getting slapped in the face publicly by a celebrity because I told a tasteless joke about a woman’s medical condition, I would probably consider that baggage, but I see how others could disagree.

Yesterday was Will Smith Movie Day it appeared on TNT/TBS/Paramount. I’m guessing that was planned already off him winning Best Actor…but if not, I think they’re going down the wrong road.

 
How is that punishment? Punishment would have been to make him watch the Oscar's the next ten years sitting in the same seat as this year.  

 
I watched the Summer of Soul, and I enjoyed it a lot. I'd love to see the full six concerts that took place that summer in '69. I love that music.

I would be so into them releasing a larger concert compilation. Let’s cross our fingers. Also I appreciate someone who isn’t positing here about you know who or just mocking the movies/award show.

Apples and oranges. The Grammys were always a young person's thing, as is modern music always for young ears and eyes. And they don't watch the shows -- their media and appreciation of music is much more fragmented and diverse than a national overview of what is popular could ever be. So there's nowhere really for a centralized award show to go. 

Movies are different because of budget process alone as a screen. Less movies get made, and the ones they do are of a certain quality not found in modern music production, where snippets on TikTok are of the moment and Soundcloud is even passé somehow. 

What I'm trying to say is that a national, centralized show like the Grammys could never accurately reflect the state of music like the Oscars can reflect the state of movies.

I agree with all of this. I guess what I was trying to say was making the Oscars more like the Grammys and trying to appeal to a younger crowd or appeal to social media is a losing strategy for the Oscars. They need to lean into what they are.

Just saw Licorice Pizza during a flight. One of the worst critically acclaimed films I’ve ever seen. Disjointed plot and poor character development. I think the appeal is solely due to 70’s nostalgia.

In contrast, an older Oscar winner on the same flight, Amour, was excellent. Probably one of my top 3 all-time favorite movies.

Just watched Power of the Dog.  Thought it was terrible.  I don't usually find movies terrible and if I do, I typically forget about them.  The only other movie I thought was terrible and remember was "The Piano".  Come to find out Jane Campion directed both.  At least I know that if the movie has a piano in it and it is directed by Jane Campion I can skip it.

Good for him, always nice to see someone get a shot at a comeback. The premise sounds kind of odd though playing an extremely obese man.
