***Official Academy Awards Discussion Thread*** - Anora is the Big Winner (1 Viewer)

Looks like of the best Pics it's Women Talking and Avatar that aren't available streaming of any form.

HBO has Banshees and Elvis
NF has All Quiet
Showtime with Everything Everywhere
Paramount + for Top Gun
Tiangle of Sadness, Fabelmans, Tar are available to rent from $6 to $20.

I heard Tar hits Peacock Friday. It's so annoying keeping track of all these. I am sure several of them are available at the local library. My current evaluations:

Elvis
- Will be totally hit or miss with people. I thought it was fun but it's Baz Luhrman so expect a lot of camp. Austin Butler is incredible as Elvis though. Hanks is laughably bad.

Banshees of Inisherin- probably would get my vote at the moment, it's the blackest of black comedies. Also not for everyone- my wife for example was literally traumatized by it

All Quiet on the Western Front
- Very well made. It looks and sounds awesome. I had some problems with the adaptation but that isn't likely to bother most people. It suffers from being pretty formulaic. The original book and 1930 Best Picture winning movie really set the template for war stories and so 90 years later it just isn't fresh anymore.

Everything Everywhere All At Once- My number 2 at the moment and the betting favorite to win. This is the farthest thing from Oscar bait. It's a sci-fi action comedy about the multiverse. Shows how much the Academy is trying to change that this movie is a favorite and has a near historic number of nominations.

Top Gun Maverick -
I assume we've all seen this, it's great

Avatar Way of Water- If you have any interest, get to the theater and see it in 3D. It's closer to a theme park ride than a film but it's a blast. I don't think it will hold up to at home viewing though. Even if you aren't really into the whole Avatar thing, the last hour is just one sick *** naval battle that anyone would enjoy.

I read that saw are stunned that Cruise didn't get a nomination for acting for Maverick, but let's face it, films like that rarely get any love come Oscar time, much less in the acting categories, so the fact that the film got any nominations at all is probably a major win. Besides, did anyone watch that film and think that was an award-winning performance? I sure didn't. Fun film, and a worthy sequel, especially given how long ago the original was released, but come on now.

I enjoyed the film and am surprised it was nominated for anything outside of maybe some technical categories.

Yeah, he was good but his performance didn't make the movie. I thought the other nominations were well deserved. Now that they are nominating 10 movies a year for Best Picture, it should include more genres like action and be open to blockbuster crowd pleasers.

I didn't like Elvis but I admit going into it with the wrong attitude. I thought I was going to be seeing a biopic. And that's what I was looking forward to. It was definitely not that. It reminded me a lot of Moulin Rouge. Which, no surprise, is also a Baz Luhrman movie.

Finally watched last year's winner CODA and while it's very good, I am shocked it won. Again, super heart warming and and plenty of laughs but even for a weak year coming off COVID, this didn't seem like a Best Picture winner. There were some much better films but maybe they were too polarizing (Power of the Dog). Also, I wonder if this gives some insight into how the change to ranked voting could impact the award. I would imagine not many people had this as their 1 but I also doubt many had it too far down since it's so likable.

The Oscars get it wrong all the time and have selected far worse movies than this. This just didn't seem like the kind of bait they often get caught taking.

Is Triangle of Sadness available anywhere? Has anyone seen it?

This is going to be a fairly polarizing movie. I went with a group of 8 people, and three had to step out once a certain scene started. I thought it was excellent but I had to sit with it a few days before this opinion formed.

The Academy Awards have always been pretty dumb. They generally only nominate certain kinds of films. Think about that list of the 100 greatest comedies ever that was released years ago. I wonder how many Oscars those 100 films COMBINED have won. I'll bet the number is pretty small.

Finally watched this tonight. I haven't decided overall on the movie (definitely liked it a lot, only question is how much it sticks with me), but the performances were as good as I've seen in any movie in many years. Absolutely blown away by all four main characters.

Yeah huge blind spots for comedy, horror, sci-fi and action.

I think expanding the nominations to 10 has helped. This year’s selections feature an action movie, a comedy, a science fiction/action movie, and a science fiction/action/comedy.

Agree. Plus they have been better about recognizing foreign films. Two this year. They used to do 10 nominations way back in the day, not sure why they ever got away from it. Seems only in the best interest of the entire movie industry to highlight more movies.

Just saw Tar and thought it was genius. It's slow but the second half really does deliver a payoff for me. This is a true 2022 movie in it's topic (even if it is set in the very not of the moment world of classical music). It is so deft in how it handles a rather hot button issue.

It was also pretty cool that I hadn't listened to Jacqueline Du Pre's Elgar Concerto in quite awhile but played it today while grading papers and then boom it plays a significant role in the movie!

You are right. It definitely won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, and the hard to watch scene is indeed really hard to watch. That said, I loved the film. It takes its time, which I really appreciate (others may find it slow in parts), and I found the characters and their interactions fascinating and hilarious. While the themes may be well worn territory, I thought this take on them was a refreshing and raucous satirical success.

Full disclosure: I’m affiliated with the company that produced the film so I obviously have a rooting interest.

P.S. It’s super sad that Charlbi Dean, the lead actress in Triangle of Sadness, died this past August of a bacterial illness. I thought her performance was really good in a role that you otherwise wouldn’t expect much range from (model/influencer).

I felt that way the previous year when they selected that snoozefest Nomadland. It wasn't bad, just very average.

Even worse, they picked McDormand (who had already won twice before) for a good performance in it over Carey Mulligan for a great one (Promising Young Woman).

Completely agree. It was a weak year with the pandemic but there were better options for Actress and Picture.

Watching Fire of Love — up for best documentary. About the volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft, featuring a lot of stuff from their own films. Cinematography is incredible. If you love nature style docs, check it out.

ETA: Narrator may have not been the best, but did not detract too much.

Watched the Navalny documentary today. This one is next-level — fly on the wall as he recovers from his assassination attempt, and subsequent arrest on his return to Russia. Just speechless after the phone call. Available on HBO Max.

(ETA: It just won at BAFTAs.)

Got awkward when this one got announced for animated shorts. :oldunsure:

I saw the animated shorts program yesterday and will be posting my full thoughts on all the shorts as usual, once I've seen the others. It was a strong year in the animated category, but this one was my favorite by far. It's brilliant and laugh-out-loud hilarious throughout. You can watch it here. Also on Hulu.

Damn, thought I had more time. I need to speed up the watching. I was dragging my feet a little hoping more Best Pics would come out on a streaming option. I don't mind spending $20 or so catching up on stuff though.

@Ilov80s or anybody else - do you bother with the Animated features? I noticed I have access to 4 out of 5 of those.

I just watched this one last night, and the bolded was bananas.

Moscow4 had me rolling too.

I loved Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. A lot.

I watched the trailer for it last night, and it freaked me out. A lot. ;)

I finally got around to Everything Everywhere All at Once last night. I couldn't click with it. I liked the idea, story, most of the acting. The mother-daughter connection and story was very touching. I just can't do the slo-mo, bullet-timey, action and there is plenty of that in here. It just drives me crazy for some reason, and if I am honest I wanted to tap out about 40mins in. I will put it firmly in the "I understand why it's popular, it's just not for me" camp. It looks like I still have 1/2 the nominees to go. If I have the TV to myself tonight, I think I might try Triangle of Sadness.

Watched Tar tonight. It is great — favorite one that I’ve seen so far (and may even put it above any other movie from the past couple of years).

I was not expecting what would happen in the second half; made the build-up and payoff all the better.

My daughter and I watched The Sea Beast yesterday. We had fun with it, but it's basically How to Train Your Dragon with swimming monsters instead of flying ones, and a more diverse cast of characters.

Oh man, Triangle of Sadness. I wasn't as gung-ho about it as Dickey Moe, but I did end up mostly liking it. Ostlund has a knack for the little details of human interactions. I also love how he pokes and explores themes of class, masculinity, beauty as currency, and other things here. There are some damn funny scenes and things going on in the background here that also had me laughing. I think it was the middle chapter that didn't click with me - it's a bit over the top with the scat and I found Woody and the Russian to be the least interesting of the interactions. Just like Banshees, I could see this one not being for everybody and really turning some people off.

I think right now I would have it: Tar... Maverick..Banshees/Triangle of Sadness..Everything Everywhere..All Quiet on the Western Front.

I will watch Triangle of Sadness this week. That will leave Fablemans and Women Talking as the 2 Best Picture nominees I haven't seen. Maybe I can see if they are in at the Library for rent.

@Ilov80s did you see my post above about Women Talking coming to Hulu this week?

I might do Fabelmans tonight. I still have that, Elvis, Avatar, and Women Talking to get to.

I didn't, thanks for the heads up. That is perfect. Local library has The Fablemans due back tomorrow. Hopefully I can snag that.
You gotta go old school video store on them. Hang out by the book drop and ask everybody what they are returning so you can grab it first!
