I wanted to like it, but dragged a little for my taste. Also, would’ve been nice to get a sense what caused the flood, and what happens to the water near the end.
Also, where are the people?

Similarly, The substance is about 30 minutes too long, with a ridiculous final act.

I thought it was pretty clearly (even if unsaid) a post-apocalyptic type brought on by rising waters from global warming/climate change.

Maybe, but without spoiling anything, the change in water over the course of the film was puzzling.
If I were to submit my ranked choice ballot for this year's Academy Awards (they haven't asked yet haha), I'd rank them the follow:

My final picks:
Best Picture: Anora - Late steam from Conclave not enough.
Best Actress: Mikey Madison - I don't know how you can watch her and Demi Mooore and say Moore had the better performance. Golden Globes seem to always bow to the big names and SAG awards usually pick the favorite but Madison has won the Critics Choice and the BAFTA. The Academy usually doesn't go for the career achievement angle (remember Glenn Close a few years ago) and they like to give acting awards to younger nominees. Maybe Demi's GG's speech got enough people on her side but if we're just going on performance you have to say Madison has the edge. It's 50-50 in my mind.
Best Actor: Timothee Chalamet - I think some people just didn't love The Brutalist and Brody's performance, albeit great, was similar enough to his winning performance in The Pianist that the academy might go for the young actor who seems destined for greatness. Besides Elvis two years ago, the academy sure loves their musical biopic performances. It's another 50-50 but I'm leaning Chalamet. It would be no suprise if I went 0 for 2 on my actor/actress picks.
Best Supporting Actress: Zoe Saldana - This has been a lock for a while now. She really is the lead in the Emilia Perez and she's up against a pretty weak field here. Even Gascon's twitter scandal can't derail this win.
Best Supporting Actor: Kieran Culkin - Probably the biggest lock of the night. It's a fine performance but this is a really strong category and I didn't believe he should have been a wire to wire, no-doubter. He is though.
Best Director: Sean Baker - Again, Corbet's 2nd speech at the Golden Globes really derailed his chances IMO. Baker won the DGA and reaction to his movie is almost universally positive.
Best Screenplay: Anora - It's going to be an Anora night.
Best Adapted Screenplay: Conclave - I felt like the movie went off the rails late but it's going to win something and it's likely going to be this.

I really hope that Mikey Madison takes home Best Actress. She was really amazing. So many layers to her performance. I agree that Demi Moore’s performance, while good, isn’t comparable. But I’m not sure Anora takes Best Picture. It’s so out of left field and doesn’t seem like a traditional Best Picture candidate. Still, I really enjoyed it. Very original. It doesn’t seem like a comedy, but my wife and laughed for about an hour straight. It’s also heartbreaking without being emotionally manipulative, which is a real feat. But somehow I have the feeling it goes to The Brutalist or Conclave, which are the more conventional choices I would think (I really liked Conclave for what it’s worth). By the way, I agree with you on your Kieran prediction. I think his performance is deserving of the win, but I also feel like his was the second best in the film. Jessie Eisenberg should have been nominated in my opinion.

I just saw it and thought it was pretty good. The animation had an interesting look and the story flowed in a natural way. But as you said, not for small kids.

Looked it up. It’s only been done once - by Walt Disney in 1953. He won for Best Documentary Feature, Best Documentary Short Subject, Best Short Subject Cartoon, and Best Short Subject Two Reel.

I haven’t seen Anora yet (only film I’ve seen in a theatre lately was Dogman, so, hey, at least I’m introducing my son to movie theatres), but loved Baker’s other films. Really look forward to watching.

That is not too bad a price. I don’t like the time limits on movie rentals though, and prefer when streaming, so don’t have to worry about an expiring rental. Before he was an Oscar winning composer (original score for The Brutalist), Daniel Blumberg was a member of UK Indie Rock band Yuck. I saw them play a club date in 2011 opening for Smith Westerns. They were great and really owned the night in part because Smith Westerns copped rockstar attitude in a crappy 250 capacity dive. Blumberg cut a Dylanesque figure on stage with an unruly mop of curly hair that was a far cry from the Nosferatu looking dude who picked up the award tonight.
Yuck put out one excellent album, their self-titled debut in 2011. They had sort of a 90s retro sound somewhere between Teenage Fanclub and Dinosaur Jr. Blumberg left the band before they could record a followup record. Yuck continued on in a poppier direction while Blumberg's later projects tended toward more experimentation.

You know, as I was watching that segment, I was wondering who was in charge of assembling all the names and ensuring no one who is deserving of inclusion is missed. Trachtenberg is an easy one given all the coverage but I also wondered about icons of yesteryear who quietly pass in the elder years. It seems almost inevitable that people will be unintentionally omitted.

Love this. Hans Zimmer is one of my all time favorite film composers and it slays me that he was a member of The Buggles.

Yeah this seemed pretty egregious. I know the segment can’t go on forever but I actually do think it’s one of the beloved segments and extending it another minute seems worthwhile to capture some of those people.
Shannon Doherty was left off as well. Every year there are some notable snubs left off but this year seems like a particularly lengthy list.

Each component of Brody’s speech was positive and heartfelt. No complaints as to the content. But as a whole it felt overlong and self-indulgent. Also, if you have a lot to say, say it more quickly!
