Official Camp Battles Thread (1 Viewer)

OK, let's flesh out the most significant camp battles and try to post updates in this thread. I'll do my best to update the original post. Also, let's try and achieve maximum news posting and minimum debate of opinion. Let's let the coaches and the depth charts do most of the talking

QB:

Tebow v Orton - Advantage Orton

Orton has been owning tebow, or maybe rather Tebow has been owning himself. Many (including Cecil) feel Quinn has played well enough to jump Tebow as Orton's backup. Neck-beard is here to stay.

Palmer vs Mike Brown (owner) - Advantage Brown

No word from anywhere that Brown is considering a trade, even though Seattle and Miami could use his services.

TJax v Whitehurst - Advantage TJax

Seahawks | Tarvaris Jackson the team's starting quarterback Sat Jul 30, 04:28 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson, continuing a previous storyline, won't just enter training camp and the preseason as the Seahawks' starting quarterback, he will also be the team's starting quarterback for Week 1 of the regular season. Jackson was just signed by the team Friday, July 29, and will not be able to work with the team in training camp until Aug. 4 due to new CBA rules. 'In this situation, I think to make it the most competitive for our team, Tarvaris needs to be our starter right now,' head coach Pete Carroll said. 'He comes in as our starter. He's going to own that position until Charlie (Whitehurst) and the next couple fellas that are playing at the spot get a chance to catch up. Then the competition will begin from their end.'

Our view: Jackson struggled with consistency during his time in Minnesota and we think that could hold him back in Seattle too. This QB situation is a mess and we could see both Whitehurst and Jackson rotate back and forth as the starter in 2011.

Beck v Grossman - Advantage Grossman

Beck can't get healthy

RB:

Ryan Williams vs Beanie Wells - Advantage Wells

Wiz appears set on letting Beanie have first and best shot

Reports are that Williams looks the part more than Wells.

Spiller v Freddie Jackson - Advantage Jackson

This one continues to be closer than the coach wants it to appear

Daniel Thomas v Bush - Advantage Committee

Dolphins | Daniel Thomas talks about the running game Sat Jul 30, 06:07 PM

Looking to be Bush named the official starter, but D Thomas takes work between the tackles and goal line, Bush gets everything else. Situation is fluid. Bloom's tweet:

SigmundBloom Sigmund Bloom

RT @OmarKelly RT @thegreatrick713:Is RB Daniel Thomas' job w/ Bush situationally & 3rd down?» Nope. Other way around. Thomas on 2nd down

depth chart lists Thomas 1st

DeAngelo v Stewart - Advantage DeAngelo?

No news I can find about reps but with DWill's contract one has to assume he is taking most reps with first team. Carolina homers, we need an update.

Best v LeShoure - Advantage Best

LeShore gone for season. Best's job.

Mathews v Tolbert - Advantage Committee

Chargers | Running back by committee approach in 2011 Tue Aug 9, 12:35 AM

Running back by committee may be appearing in San Diego, as San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner is talking about using RBs Ryan Mathews and Mike Tolbert together this season. 'I don't know if (Mathews) will be one of the leading rushers because I think the emergence of Tolbert gives us a chance to have a one-two punch. Tolbert gives us a nice changeup. Obviously he's a physical, hard-to-tackle, punishing runner and Ryan has great speed, so it's a good situation,' Turner said. Turner went on to say that his current mindset is to use both runners this season. 'I think if you have guys that are diverse, you can use two,' he noted. Mathews didn't sound like he had a problem with the time share, saying the ability to have a one-two punch will really wear down defenses. 'We can both take it to the house. That's going to be hard on defenses,' Mathews noted. Tolbert also chipped in, saying that nobody on the team has a selfish attitude.

Our view: Tolbert was too successful last year to be marginalized into a backup role this year. It looks like everyone who took Mathews #1 overall in rookie drafts over Dez Bryant is going to be disappointed. Mathews will likely be overdrafted in a lot of leagues again this year.

Ingram v Thomas - Advantage Ingram

~ Running game got a good bit of work early in practice with Mark Ingram making sure to run hard throughout.

Hard running today by the backs including veteran Pierre Thomas. Still doesn't feel like he is 100 percent yet, but he likes how things are going so far.

For those of us in 2QB start leagues and 16 team leagues: Grossman vs Beck
Neither, BUT Shannahan has built up Beck all summer, so we shall see. Between the two Beck should have the edge as I believe what Rex did late last season (7:4 td to int ratio) was an abirition. Deep ball was Beck's '?' mark even at BYU. We shall see as I actually have him as a backup qb in one of my leagues.

Newton vs Clausen

According to Rivera it seems dead even at this point for who will start the 1st preseason game. Considering Newton almost has won the job outright with 2 weeks of camp, have to give the edge to Newton to start the season.

A couple of rookie QB battles bear watching in deeper leagues. Seems like the rest are pretty settled.

Clausen vs. Newton. It seems to be a foregone conclusion that Newton is the starter, but Clausen is number 1 on the depth charts for now and it's not a quesion if Newton will start this year, but when.

Gradkowski vs. Dalton. Dalton is the guy right now, but Gradkowski could easily start the season, yielding eventually to Dalton.

Henne vs. Moore. This is on simmer for now, but it won't take much to get this one boiling.

RB:

Vereen vs. Ridley vs. Faulk vs. Taylor vs. Morris vs. Woodhead vs. Green-Ellis vs. Scott Pilgrim. Might be best to avoid all together, but if you can guess right here, could be a great late round flyer.

Moreno vs. McGahee. Looks like an RBBC in the making, but John Fox has spun fantasy gold in RBBC before.

Helu vs. Torain vs. Hightower vs. Royster. Usual Shanny RB ugliness, but still worth watching.

Grant vs. Starks. This is a big one.

Ward vs. Tate to back-up Foster. Normally, I don't worry too much about back-up battles, but after seeing how easy Foster made it seem, getting this one right could pay huge dividends should Foster miss a game or more.

Brandon Jackson vs. Hardesty. May seem small, but it sounded like CLE was moving to RBBC in the first place and the winner of this one might have flex value in PPR leagues.

Take what you like and leave the rest.
