***Official CLEVELAND INDIANS Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Mark said today that the trade with McLouth was good for the pirates.

He will not give up DeRosa for prospects, he wants major league ready talent.

He is very frustrated at Hafner

"how is he tired? he sits on the bench and bats 4 times a game, how can he be tired?"

He is frustrated at the injuries and the starting pitching.

only having two guys that are pitching well (lee and pavano) will not get us anywhere

wont see him again until the 17th, but get your questions in and i will try to get them answered

How's Westbrook looking?

Why'd they call up LaPorta if they weren't going to play him consistently?

WTF is wrong with Fausto??

he had a rough day on monday and mark will know more today, very vague about this one.

Mark brought LaPorta up to use at the manager's descrection. Mark thought that LaPorta would give us a chance to win and Wedge was just fighting for his job (his words) at the time and felt that LaPorta wasn't ready. Mark sent him back down so he could continue to play everyday.

he has no confidence and thus ian't pitching with the authority that helped him have a great season.

I get it too....and as much as I'd like to see it....what the heck is Willis or whoever takes over gonna do? And are we going to spend next year on a manager with a track record or the cheapest one we can find?

But, maybe the best reason for firing Wedge sooner than later is so he can't save his job again.

Really, if anyone reading this thread doesn't know I want Wedge gone, then they're not paying attention.

In this case, I do think regime change is necessary. At the very least, as Jay at Lets Go Tribe points out, let's cut the crap of Shapiro publically defending Wedge. Nobody cares and it makes him look foolish.

I don't think he's done a good job with what he's had. As the DiaTribe pointed out, the team has underperformed in 4 of the last 5 years (using the Pythagorean Expected Winning Percentage). It just seems like he keeps making the wrong moves. If he's broken off now, we could move Skinner over on an interim basis and start evaluating for 2010 under something approaching battlefield conditions. Heck, it may even produce a spark-plug effect and the team may catch fire.

I do think this team plays uptight - partly due to Wedge's attitude and also partly to his love of versatility. How long did it take Wedge to figure out that Peralta can't really play short? Egad, can you be absolutely sure you're going to see DeRosa in the lineup, and where? Will Choo play left or right?

The time has come, IMO.

Tribe trades former 1st rounder Aubrey to O's for PTBNL.

Tribe aquires Veres from Yankees for cash. Yes, cash. Maybe like $5.95.

Shapiro says "life outside of baseball is going great"

too bad his life is in baseball.....

he is frustrated at everyone in the organization, but gave the vibe of "learning experience....play through it.... strong second half...etc."

will try to talk to him on monday about derosa, lee and wedge

any other topic suggestions,... I usually have time for 1-3 depending on how long and detailed his answers are

Can you tell him I said not to trade Lee? tia (edit to clarify: unless we get floored by a deal that is just not all prospects)

What about moving Wood now that Perez is in house? Does his contract have a no trade?

Lee to the Phils?

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9833180...beside-Halladay

Updated: July 21, 2009, 3:41 PM EDT 15 comments

The Phillies are not just after Roy Halladay.

Asked Monday if the team was still pursuing Indians left-hander Cliff Lee, one club official responded, "We have many balls in the air. And we are still looking for top-of-the-rotation help."

Halladay, 32, has a better track record than Lee, who turns 31 on Aug. 30. But Lee represents an excellent alternative, and it's in the Phillies' interests to create the perception that they have other options.

The question is whether they actually do.

Early talks between the Phillies and Indians over Lee went nowhere. The availability — and durability — of Mariners lefty Erik Bedard remains in question. And the Phillies do not seem interested in second-tier starters such as Diamondbacks lefty Doug Davis.

In theory, the price in talent for Lee should not be as high as the price for Halladay. But Lee is owed about $11.5 million in salary through 2010, including a club option. Halladay is owed about twice that much, making him — in one important sense — less attractive.

The Indians, knowing they cannot compete next season if they move Lee, would consider moving him only for a knockout proposal. Such a proposal would need to start with a major-league ready starting pitcher such as the Red Sox's Clay Buchholz or Braves' Tommy Hanson.

The Phillies have such a pitcher — left-hander J.A. Happ, who is 7-0 with a 2.68 ERA. Adding Class AAA right-hander Carlos Carrasco and Class A outfielder Dominic Brown to the package surely would get the Indians' attention. But if the Phillies were to trade Happ and Brown, they probably would prefer Halladay, right?

Halladay is 11-3 with a 2.73 ERA this season, while Lee is 5-9 with a 3.31 ERA — and the fifth-worst run support in the American League. Lee also leads the league with 136 innings pitched, though Halladay has thrown only four fewer innings in two fewer starts.

Teams use sliding scales when determining the values of potential trade acquisitions: What players are they giving up? How much salary are they taking on? Thus, Lee would be more appealing than Halladay, if the overall price was right.

In any case, the Phillies would be wise to explore every option. They are the front-runners for Halladay because they possess the right combination of desire, prospects and financial flexibility. Teams such as the Red Sox and Yankees seem to lack desire. Teams such as the Dodgers and Angels seem to lack the right players.

The Phillies should not be fooled by their commanding lead in the NL East: They rank 13th in the NL in rotation ERA. Halladay would fit them perfectly. But so could Cliff Lee.

Raffy Right next to go. Class A lefty pitcher in return from the Rockies that we'll put in AA.

Rumors of Lee (and/or Victor) getting alot of interest from Tampa. Not sure I'd be overwhelmed with Wade Davis and Reid Brignac though. Make that David Price and Ben Zobrist and we gots a deal. :lmao:

Shapiro this morning:

"if I can get Kershaw for Lee i would drive him to L.A. myself"

said the dodgers have no interest in loving Billingsly or Kershaw to anyone.

said today he will be on phones all day looking for value

No idea why the Dodgers would even consider something like that. The hot rumor yesterday from Rosenthal had to be a dud too. VMart and Lee to the Dodgers for a package centered around Loney and a couple pitchers. Then the speculation started that Kershaw or Billingsley was one of the pitchers. He said such a deal was being highly considered on both sides. Doubtful at best.

So I guess we can start the Matt LaPorta watch? I'm in Columbus this week; do you suppose he needs help moving his stuff to C-town?

The Indians simply need to draft a helluva lot better. This is an organization that drafted an insane amount of talent to build the 90s teams. Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Bartolo Colon, Albert Belle, Paul Shuey, Chuck Nagy and Brian Giles were Indians draft picks. Sure they traded off other players to add Lofton, Baerga, Alomar, and Vizquel.

But you have to make good trades AND DRAFT WELL.

Currently on the Indians roster that the Indians have drafted / originally signed are:

Chris Gimenez

Victor Martinez

David Huff

Jeremy Sowers

The key to the Indians future is if guys like Crowe and Chisenhall turn into superstars.

Let's also take a moment and thank Shapiro for dumping 1/6th of the team payroll for the next 3 years into Jake Westbrook. What was it exactly that convinced Shapiro to dump $11 million per year of a small market payroll into that guy? The 4.17 ERA? The 1.42 WHIP? The 15-10 record?

That contract is the real reason we have to trade Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez.

I'd rather have Jake's contract (his injury cannot be used in any arguement) than Hafner's contract any day of the week.

Sezy, tell Shapiro he better trade Victor now that he dealt Lee!
Also, ask him if he was given the "Code Red" from ownership to get the best deal they can for Lee (and Victor possibly) and pull the trigger(s). For a while now, all we've heard is he'd have to be absolutely floored by a trade offer to deal one of our studs. While I don't totally think we were taken to the shed in the deal, I'd be hard pressed to believe that this deal floored our front office brass and scouts.disclaimer: I did not hear Shapiro's presser with the media.
