After cheating death several times, Community‘s luck came to an end today. Ironically, Community‘s previous eleventh-hour renewal, clinched in that four-series deal producer Sony TV was able to negotiate with NBC last May on the strength of its buzzy new show The Blacklist, came with the presumption that the fifth season of the show would be its last. It was a fitting last chapter, with creator Dan Harmon returning to the helm. But as NBC’s comedy woes began last fall, the end game plan was shelved. Community didn’t hit it out of the park in Season 5 but it didn’t blow it either, staying very close to the Season 4 average, which had earned a renewal. It averaged a 1.5 rating in adults 18-49, down 0.1 from last season, and actually gained viewership — 3.7 million vs. 3.5 million last season. It outrated NBC’s other returning Thursday comedy, Parks And Recreation, which has been renewed, despite facing much stiffer competition in CBS’ The Big Bang Theory. It also has a passionate following.

“I think that we’re old reliable, like a Tupperware in the fridge,” Harmon said about NBC’s stance on a Community renewal in March at PaleyFest. “We’ll find out when the network is the hungriest.” Would the show find a home elsewhere? Harmon addressed a possible future on a VOD service like Netflix or Hulu if NBC passes, saying that he’s heard “whispers from dark corners” about such a scenario.

There's hope.

Could 'Community' be revived on Hulu?

(EW.com) -- Greendale may not have closed its doors for good after all: Hulu is currently in talks with Sony Pictures TV for a sixth season of the recently cancelled "Community," a source close to the show tells EW. (Deadline first reported the news.) Sony and Hulu aren't commenting, and another source stressed caution about such a deal, but a proposed plan would likely include a 13-episode new season of the community college meta-comedy, with creator Dan Harmon in the fold. If by chance an agreement were reached, it would push the show past the 100-episode milestone (it's at 97), and, of course, bring it one crucial step closer to fulfilling fans' rally cries of "six seasons and a movie."

Hulu is a logical destination for the show, as it already owns the exclusive digital rights to the "Community's" first five seasons. (The off-network rights belong to Comedy Central.) The streaming service is committed to expanding its original programming, which currently includes shows like The Awesomes, Deadbeat and East Los High, as well as Casey Wilson's upcoming Real Housewives parody The Hotwives of Orlando, but original episodes of Community would put HuluPlus — with its six million subscribers — on the map in a bigger way, much like the revival of Arrested Development did for Netflix.

Earlier this month, NBC officially cut bait on "Community," whose fifth season averaged 3.8 million viewers and a 1.6 rating in the 18-to-49-year-old demographic, including DVR playback. Harmon has kept expectations in check about the possibility of the show — which had made scoring a last-minute renewal from NBC an annual rite — finding a second life elsewhere.

Responding to the cancellation news on his blog, he said he was open to making more episodes ("I'm not going to be the guy who recancels cancelled Community") but also noted: "[T]here are lots of reasons a Community resurrection could be difficult. So be prepared for that."

It's back!

As might be appropriate for a cult comedy, “Community” has been saved again from the cancellation crypt.
Sony Pictures Television, the studio which owns and produces the show, announced a deal Monday to bring the comedy back in the fall for at least one more batch of 13 episodes on Yahoo Screen, the company’s streaming video service.
The deal with Yahoo was something of a surprise because most reports had Hulu as the probable destination if “Community” managed to be saved again.
Yahoo Screen offers reruns of many shows but Yahoo has been putting more emphasis on adding original shows.
“Community,” which uses a study group at Greendale Community College as the jumping-off point for its self-referential storylines and pop culture obsessions, comes with a core audience of passionate fans. Those fans helped save the show from a previous threat of cancellation two seasons ago. At that point, the show’s creator, Dan Harmon, returned to the series. He had exited a year earlier because of issues over his sometimes eccentric leadership of the show.
After one more season with Mr. Harmon, the fifth in the series’s run, “Community” was cancelled by NBC last spring.
Sony, however, has a history of bringing shows back from the dead — or near-dead. The studio managed to keep the comedy “Rules of Engagement” going for several additional seasons on CBS even though it was not put on fall schedules. And it placed the drama “Damages” on the satellite service DirecTV after it was cancelled by the cable channel FX.
“Community” is expected to retain all the regular cast members who appeared last season.

Did they make the right call letting the racist comedian perform? It seemed like a lot to sacrifice for an act nobody likes, but i say yes

This may be my favorite season

The grifters episode and the Chang episode are all time episodes

They've manged to stay grounded and high concept at the same time

Btw, search function is broken...

Just started watching this, it's a shame there is almost no way to stream it legally. Got through seasons 1 and 2 (and about to that point in the thread), not too worried about spoilers but gonna wait to read the rest of the thread.

Paintball and RV episodes were excellent. Wedding episode was ok but Jeff`s speech kicked things up a notch lol.

I keep forgetting to watch new episodes without my DVR automatically picking them up. Not a bad thing to watch 2 or 3 in a row when I do remember, of course.

fantastic finale

anybody know when they'll tell us the ratings?

rumors that it has way more viewers than Nielson ever counted...

How is this show not getting more love? This going to be one of the shows where in a few years, after it gets cancelled, people are gonna watch the DVD and then start threads about how great it is and how did it ever get canceled, like Arrested Development.
I had never even heard of Community until a few months ago when I looked up Gillian Jacobs after seeing her in that Netflix show. It is hard to believe I missed this when it was on. I watched several seasons of Parks & Rec on Netflix and was aware of 30 rock and The Office but somehow Community escaped my radar. I guess I just don't watch much live TV other than the hour long dramas on Showtime, AMC, etc.

After bingeing the entire series over the past few months it is now one of my favorite comedies. The chemistry of the cast, the creativity of the writers, the silliness and nerdiness of certain episodes, the meta-ness of the whole thing.... it was right up my alley. It kind of reminded me of Chuck. There were definitely some misses at times but overall it was outstanding.

Britta is why I started watching Community but it didn't take long for me to switch to Team Annie's Boobs. She is as fine as they come.

Somewhere in this thread someone mentioned nude pics of Alison Brie. Google is your friend. There are two pics of her completely nude hanging out with her boyfriend (James Franco's brother) and some friends. Warning: Franco's dong is hanging out in one of the pics.

She did an interview with Conan a few years ago and talks about running around naked on the campus of her liberal college in California. Her school sounds a lot like Greendale, and she sounds like a lot of fun.

I hope they follow through with the movie, I'm gonna miss this show.

There is skill to it. More importantly, it has to be joyful, effortless, fun. TV defeats its own purpose when it's pushing an agenda, or trying to defeat other TV or being proud or ashamed of itself for existing. It's TV, it's comfort. It's a friend you've known so well, and for so long you just let it be with you. And it needs to be okay for it to have a bad day, or phone in a day. And it needs to be okay for it to get on a boat with Levar Burton and never come back. Because eventually, it all will.”— Abed

Are there any other comedies on right now that are similar to Community?

I still haven't gotten around to watching Mad Men so I think I might finally start that just to get my Brie fix.

Rick and Morty is Dan Harmon's new project, and has pretty much the same "oh my god I just got lost on tvtropes for half an hour" feel that Community did.
