Will this show match Arrested Development in cult status going forward?
I don't know about "cult status," but I think it will exceed AD in terms of public outcry. And this is coming from a guy with an Arrested Development alias/avatar.I still think Arrested Development is the better show, but Community has two things going for it. The first and most important by far is that the characters are likable and there's a genuine interest in finding out what happens to them in the future that I don't think existed for Arrested Development. AD fans just wanted to keep laughing, nobody really cared if George Sr. really built homes in Iraq or which super-famous actress Michael would eventually settle down with. The second is that the shows' fans will be all over social media. Twitter didn't exist and people hadn't really fully explored the power of other forms of social media back then. Will this show match Arrested Development in cult status going forward?
I agree with both points but I'd add a third - Community is a very clever, original and inventive show. The cast is great, the characters are great but the writing is really top-notch.I don't know about "cult status," but I think it will exceed AD in terms of public outcry. I don't think it will be as cult-ish as Arrested Development. For one, I think a lot of people were intrigued by Arrested Development, but found it too hard to catch up to episodes that they missed. By season 3, I think even most critics were saying that if you haven't watched seasons 1 & 2, you have missed the boat and not to bother at that point. With more sources for watching TV shows these days, anyone could catch up to Community now on Hulu/Netflix/etc. Even if someone had missed the boat, I also don't think that is Community's problem. I feel like someone who was intrigued by Community could tune into it on Thursday and not feel like they are lost because of previous developments that they missed, as Community is a bit more episodic.ETA: So, I think AD is more popular now than when it aired, once people who missed the boat on AD the first go-around got on. I think Community is about at its peak popularity. Will this show match Arrested Development in cult status going forward?
Friday is kind of a death slot. They wouldn't want to move any of the new, yet-to-premiere sitcoms to a Friday night debut, it'd never gain an audience. They probably don't have anything else to fill the other half of the hour. The episodes will air before the end of May sweeps, it'll happen (they're pretty much contractually obligated to make 22 episodes this year, so they might as well air them). There are enough holes in the lineup that "Community" should find a spot sooner or later. Why wouldn't NBC replace Chuck with Community on Fridays when Chuck ends in January? Ratings aren't as important on Friday and Community has enough of a cult following to handle the move.
Whitney is being moved to Wednesdays and losing The Office lead-in won't help ratings. Community could take that spot when it returns. Friday is a death spot but no one expects more than a 4th season from Community so it could be where it ends up next year.Friday is kind of a death slot. A world where a lotta fat guys are made to think they can land a hot chick too just cuz they saw it on the television. What kind of world do we live in where "According to Jim" lasts 8 seasons but Arrested Development lasts 3 and Community maybe 4?
This is awesome. Apparently, "Beetlejuice" has been uttered on the show three times.
That was great, but Gillian Jacobs is the sexiest woman I've ever seen in a forest green body suit.Weak episode last night though. But at least they still shoot for the stars.Alison Brie is amazing.
Critics loved it. Link Link I kind of agreed with you, though. But I was stoned, have to see how it holds up to repeated viewings. That was great, but Gillian Jacobs is the sexiest woman I've ever seen in a forest green body suit.Weak episode last night though. It had its moments, but I thought it was a bit weak too. But they set a pretty high bar on holiday eps with Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas last year.Critics loved it. Look at the head on Hugh.I think they were making fun of the show Glee when talking about regionals.
Hahaha. Look at the post above mine, dude didn't know what was up with all the "regionals" talk.Look at the head on Hugh.I think they were making fun of the show Glee when talking about regionals.
I'd take it as a good sign that NBC seems to be scheduling Community for the May sweeps period while benching Whitney and Are You There Chelsea during that critical time.NBC will make more changes to its Wednesday and Thursday lineups in the spring when it will bring back cult favorite Community and will introduce the remaining 3 unscheduled midseason series, comedies Bent and Best Friends Forever and the unscripted Betty White’s Off Their Rockers, which received solid sampling after the network’s Betty While birthday special last month. The addition of the 3 new series will result in a lot of time-slot sharing and no repeats, with NBC touting its spring schedule as featuring the highest percentage of original programs in the network’s history with only with only 13 total hours of repeat programming from Sunday to Friday through mid-May.
Community will return to its Thursday 8 PM slot on March 15, ending the experiment with 30 Rock in the half-hour. 30 Rock will slide to the more suitable for it 8:30-9 PM slot, bumping Parks & Recreation, which will take a break, returning to finish its season on April 19 in the post-Office 9:30 PM slot after Up All Night finishes its 24-episode original first-season run.
Romantic comedy Bent is getting an unusual air pattern, running back-to-back episodes from 9-10 PM on Wednesdays, wrapping its run in just 3 weeks: March 21, 28 and April 4. NBC’s other midseason comedy, BFF, will be paired with Off Their Rockers in the Wednesday 8 PM slot starting on April 4, following the season finales of Whitney and Are You There, Chelsea. Rock Center With Brian Williams will move yet again, this time from 9 PM to 10 PM on Wednesday for 5 weeks before sliding back to 9 PM to make room for the return of all-original Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. “We are happy to have an unprecedented amount of original content on NBC this spring,” NBC’s Bob Greenblatt said. Bent, Best Friends Forever and Betty White’s Off Their Rockers are welcome additions to the Wednesday schedule, and we know that the loyal fans of Community will be pleased with its return to its home on Thursdays at 8:00 p.m.”
And opening against the first night of the NCAA tournament, too. Too bad, would've loved to see it get a shot at having a banner ratings night (relatively speaking) on its return.Glad to see it back but wish it wasn't back up against Big Bang Theory still which targets the same demographics.
Parks & Rec is still airing all of its episodes. I think it could be good for Parks & Rec because it will come back in a better time slot. When it says parks and Rec will take a break, does that mean it's a scheduled break? I'm guessing they wouldn't just cut episodes out of the season in a series that is seemingly doing well.
on the plus side, 30 Rock was pulling in similar numbers in that time slot (and 30 Rock was advertised a lot more than Community ever was.)And opening against the first night of the NCAA tournament, too. back on!Community on Comedy CentralNBC sitcom Community, headlined by Joel McHale, has an off-network home: Comedy Central. The comedy-themed cable network will begin airing repeats of the first three seasons in fall 2013. Community returned last night as the NBC Thursday night anchor after a nine-week hiatus. No decision by the network on a fourth season renewal has been made yet on the perennial low-rated, but critically acclaimed comedy.
Ratings: Community Pop, Pop!s With Awaited Return, Awake Gains ViewersMatt Webb MitovichNBC’s Community returned from its too-long hiatus to 4.9 million total viewers and a demo rating of 2.2, delivering increases of 36 and 47 percent over the comedy’s most recent outing (on Dec. 8 ) and a 14-month, non-sports time slot demo high for NBC.What’s more, NBC points out that Community – with Bang Bang Theory benched by NCAA hoops — was No. 1 among Adults 18-34 and Men 18-34 during its half hour, besting even a little show called American Idol. Cool, cool, cool…Year-over-year, Community was up 29 percent in the demo, while versus its season-to-date average it delivered a 38 percent gain. That teed up 30 Rock, now in the 8:30 slot, for week-to-week gains of 18 and 43 percent, hitting 4.1 million viewers and a 2.0 rating. In other good news for NBC, Awake in its third week saw a 17 percent bump in audience (to 5.1 mil) while matching last Thursday’s 1.6 demo rating (which marks a 33 percent improvement over the Peacock’s previous Thursdays-at-10 performances via Prime Suspect and The Firm).Thursday’s other headline goes to the premiere of Ashley Judd’s Missing, which drew 10.6 million total viewers — aka ABC’s most-watched drama of the night, and the network’s biggest audience in the 8 pm spot in 14 months — while netting a 2.0 rating with the 18-49 crowd. For comparison’s sake, ABC’s other drama premieres this season netted out as follows:* Once Upon a Time: 12.8 million viewers, 3.9 rating* Pan Am: 10.8 mil, 3.1* Revenge: 10 mil, 3.3* Charlie’s Angels: 8.7 mil, 2.1* GCB: 7.6 mil, 2.2* The River: 7.5 mil, 2.4Elsewhere on Thursday:* American Idol, with 15.5 million total viewers and a 4.5 rating, was down 10 and 8 percent week-to-week. Fox’s repeat of the Touch pilot placed second in the 9 o’clock hour with 8.7 million viewers.* The Vampire Diaries (2.6 mil/1.2) dipped 8 percent, while Secret Circle (1.6 mil/0.7) was down 12 percent in the demo.* Grey’s Anatomy (9.7 mil/3.0) gained a few eyeballs but lost a tenth in the demo; Private Practice (7 mil/2.2) enjoyed gains of 11 and 5 percent with The Mentalist MIA.* Of NBC’s other comedies, The Office (4.9 mil/2.3) dropped 12 percent in the demo, Up All Night (3.63 mil/1.7) was flat.
I've loved since there was a Soviet Union and only one Damon Wayans.
