According to Yahoo's Terez Paylor, the Lions see Danny Amendola as a candidate to replace Golden Tate as a "safety blanket" for Matthew Stafford.

It's not the first time we've heard this as Tim Twentyman of Lions.com had previously reported that Amendola was developing a "nice rapport" with Stafford. Obviously a favorite of head coach Matt Patricia, whose Patriots tenured overlapped with his, Amendola has the potential to be a productive slot receiver in Detroit, particularly with Stafford's arm strength on the decline. With that said, it should be noted that Amendola has never cleared 700 yards receiving in a single season. Despite the early praise, the veteran remains a distant third to Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones in Detroit's receiving pecking order.

Amendola is the best route runner on the Lions, but their offensive philosophy under Bevell will look nothing like the Caldwell/JBC era. References to Tate are complete irrelevant, he won’t come anywhere near 130-140 targets and 90-100 catches, and his YAC capability is not comparable to Golden.

He’s still got a canon AFAIK, but he has been inaccurate several days during TC. Think they gave him the last two days off, no reason given, just veteran treatment. Beat writer said he never missed a practice 2011-18.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Danny Amendola (questionable, chest) faces an uphill battle to play Week 4 against the Chiefs.

While Matthew Stafford (questionable, hip) appears to be in the clear, Amendola will have a "much harder time getting on the field," per Rapoport. Amendola was a limited participant at Friday's practice after logging absences on both Wednesday and Thursday, though the veteran slot man appears to be on the doubtful side of questionable. Tom Kennedy's promotion from the practice squad Friday may have foreshadowed Amendola's absence. Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones and T.J. Hockenson would stand to benefit in the likely event that Amendola sits.

Danny Amendola (chest) is out for Week 4 against the Chiefs.

Amendola resumed practicing late in the week, but the Lions didn't feel it was enough to prepare him for Sunday's home matchup with Kansas City. His absence leaves Detroit in somewhat of a bind as Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones are both primarily outside receivers. Tight end T.J. Hockenson could be a candidate for increased slot usage with Amendola sitting this one out.

Danny Amendola caught 8-of-11 targets for 105 yards in Detroit's Week 7 divisional loss to the Vikings.

Consider it an anomaly as Amendola hadn't topped 40 receiving yards since Week 1 coming into Week 7. His 11 targets finished second on the team to Marvin Jones' (10/94/4) otherworldly 13. Perhaps the savvy slot vet will be a pickup in Week 9 if he builds on this performance, but we have our doubts.

Danny Amendola caught 8-of-8 targets for 95 yards in the Lions' Week 8 win over the Lions.

After seeming to fall out of the offense, Amendola has now gone at least 8/95 in back-to-back contests. He has some PPR juice after all. He could maintain it for Week 9, where the Lions will be venturing to Oakland to face the Raiders' undermanned defense.

Danny Amendola caught 8-of-13 targets for 102 yards in Detroit's Week 15 loss to the Bucs.

Amendola's highlight reel included a 56-yard grab despite being awarded a pass interference call while being dragged to the ground by Bucs CB Sean Murphy-Bunting. That catch helped setup Wes Hills' (10/21/2) first of two touchdowns on the day. While Kenny Golladay (3/44) has fallen by the wayside in David Blough's three starts (relative to his production from Matthew Stafford, anyhow), Amendola's quietly been revived with a team-high 24 percent target share on 29 looks in that stretch. He's suddenly become a high-floor WR4 assuming Blough remains under center in Denver next week.

Danny Amendola caught 5-of-7 targets for 81 yards in Week 1 against Chicago.

He led the team in receiving with Kenny Golladay sidelined. Amendola got 32 of his yards on one catch. He saw fewer targets than Quintez Cephus, who also played out of the slot. With Cephus flashing, Amendola's role could fade when Golladay gets healthy.

Yeah, but how much of that can be credited to nerves for his first ever NFL game?  And he wasn't expecting to be starting Week 1.  He also led the team in targets, so that's a plus at least.  I don't know, I've got to start him or Danny.  I'm sure I'll change it six times before kickoff and ultimately start the wrong guy.

Danny Amendola (hip) is out for Week 11 against Carolina. 

Detroit will be thin at wide receiver with Amendola and Kenny Golladay (hip) out. Marvin Jones would presumably be the team's WR1 and Marvin Hall the WR2 against an average Carolina secondary. Hall, who has seen 13 percent of the team's targets and leads the offense in air yards over Detroit's past three games, is a high-variance WR3/4 option this week.

Pro Football Focus' Doug Kyed reports free agent Danny Amendola still wants to play in 2021 but is holding out for the "right situation." 

Per Kyed, "several teams have reached out." Kyed reports Amendola, who is working out with Cardinals backup Colt McCoy, wants to be "selective." It is easy to laugh at the idea of Amendola biding his time, but we believe it. Teams are always in need of slot help, and Amendola remained effective in 2020. We would imagine he finds a new home soon and has a decent shot at cracking someone's 53-man roster.
