Resignation letter.  Not a big deal but interesting https://goplifer.com/2016/07/22/resignation-letter/
Every single person in a Democracy should read and understand the top graph of that letter:

We come together in political parties to magnify our influence. An organized representative institution can give weight to our will in ways we could not accomplish on our own. Working with others gives us power, but at the cost of constant, calculated compromise. No two people will agree on everything. There is no moral purity in politics.

...

No sensible adult demands moral purity from a political party,

I like how people think that Trump signals the death of the GOP. Yes, the party is divided, as evidenced by the 17 candidates running, but at least the division is being addressed. Meanwhile most Dems continue to be sheep to their Establishment. Republicans are way ahead in their process of evolution. The pendulum will swing back hard one day. I'm not a Trump fan and am not happy with the way things are going within the party but I'm glad these things are happening. It's time to stop the focus on religion (I'm agnostic), abortion(I'm pro-choice) and gay rights (I'm pro-gay marriage) and focus on the economy and our security.
The pendulum on the left hasn't swayed far from center to start with.

The pendulum was allowed to sway way to far to the right.

Former KKK leader David Duke, citing Trump, announces Senate bid

Duke, a vocal Trump supporter, announced his candidacy for the seat in Louisiana on Friday and said he was “overjoyed” to see the businessman’s campaign  “embrace most of the issues that I’ve championed for years,” including the nationalist and protectionist notion of “America First.”
Can't tell you the sick feeling seeing this human excrement rise from the dead in your home state. Thanks, Donald.

Personally I think this means LA has a decent chance of going blue this year, I thought this before and I think it is more true now with the nazi getting in the race. That's probably contrarian to CW but we shall see.

This "America First" business....I'm curious about it.  Trump's favorite book is The Bible and he needs the fundies badly.  Where in the New Testament did Jesus espouse the virtue of putting one's self first, always?  Been awhile since I read it and I know there's always new interpretations, so maybe one of you can direct me to the verses where Jesus says "Me First!  Our country First".

He stole that phrase from David Duke.

America First (as you may know) goes back to the US 1920s and 1930's right up until the eve of war with Germany and Japan.

Whereupon it was proven to be a traitorous cabal of fascist sympathizers. Not kidding.

This is maybe off point but maybe not:

One reporter from the Post asked if he considered adultery a sin. “I don’t think it’s a sin,” he said, after half a minute of silence, “but I don’t think it should be done.” Had he done it? “I’ll let you guess,” Trump said.

- I think Trump has kind of fashioned this out of thin air. Yes he believes in it but I also think he's completely self-serving. So it's really not America First it's Donald First. I think if it came to America First or Donald First then Donald would pick himself every time.

I remember David Duke running for Gov of Louisiana in the early 90s.  I was blown away that a member of the KKK received as much support as he did.  I had hoped that this disgrace of a man would have vanished, but no.  Sadly, emboldened by the emergence of Trump's divisive rhetoric, he resurfaces.  I'd like to believe that nobody will vote for him, but then again, I'd like to believe in unicorns and the Easter Bunny too.

From 1990:

Even Liz Smith, the doyenne of attention, access, gossip and celebrity, figured this was too much. In her column two weeks post-LOVE ON THE ROCKS, she tried to take stock of the madness.

“I once wrote a flattering and, I thought, truthful evaluation of Donald for New York magazine,” she wrote. “I said I thought (I hoped) one day he’d get over his youthful immaturity and build low and middle-income housing and maybe get into a better form of philanthropy. I opined also that he might one day be President.

“I pointed out that Donald didn’t want to have to think seriously right now about the needs of others while he was busy empire-building,” she continued. “And he was satisfied to do only superficial charity giving. He congratulated me at the time for my ability to size him up.

“Well,” Smith concluded, “now it appears Donald Trump will never be President. He can be a lot of other important things, but not the chief executive of the U.S., unless, of course, the next few generations of Americans produced are mutants with very brief memories.”

- Overall this article is a good read IMO.

Trump claimed violent crime is higher in the big cities like Chicago.  Do you have city stats?
Put it this way: In 1990, in New York City there were 2,245 homicides. In 2015, there were 355. In 1992, Los Angeles County had a record high of 2,589 homicides. There were 655 over the last 12 months. In 1992, Chicago saw 943 murders, or a rate of 34 murders per 100,000 citizens. Although it still owns a far higher murder rate than most major cities, in 2014 there were 432 murders and in 2015 488. Last year, Dallas saw a spike in murders, yet the 10.7 homicides per 100,000 residents was the city’s fourth-lowest total since police started keeping track in 1930. In Denver 95 people were murdered in 1992, 34 in 2014, and 50 (a nine-year high) in 2015.
Stats from almost every city tell the same tale.

This scares and disgusts me.  David Duke forced a run-off for Gov of La by receiving half a million votes.  He lost the run-off but received nearly 700,000 votes.  Not just an alleged racist; a proud member of the KKK.  This was not segregation era - this was 1992.

Jesus.

He ran for Governor and Senator. I worked (volunteered) for the Edwards campaign and the Johnston campaign. This got me into politics.

Most people recall what the French conservatives did last year in dropping out of several provincial elections to ensure that Le Pen would not win certain important prominent seats. Well the LA GOP did that in the Senate race, they dropped out all other candidates (we have an open primary) and dropped all funding. They stood aside for Johnston, the Democrat.

I don't know if that's necessary this time as DD is a far weaker gollum of a creature than he used to be but I hope the parties ensure that they join behind the "best" candidate. Since we have an open primary it may have to be the Democrats who will have to consider this now, not sure.

Btw the guy has a history as a Nazi as well as a KKK'er. Very subtle stuff believe it or not for untrained ears back in the 90s and I've said here before how Trump seems to work some of the same subtle themes.

I think Chicago has gotten somewhat worse this year.  By April 20 of 2016, Chicago had recorded 1000 shootings. By May of 2016, Chicago had reached 1500 shootings. In early July of 2016, Chicago had surpassed 2000 shooting victims.   I would count these as violent crimes even if not they are not all fatal.

Assuming that's true, what would Trump do to fix that?

Find out what caused the increase and do something about it.

Police in Chicago made 30% fewer arrests in the early part of this year compared to last year.  Street stops are down more than 80 percent so far this year.

You can't be serious, major stretch here friend. Lots of subject matter to pick on the Donald for but I wouldn't say this is it.

We can't be making other countries rich off our own dime. We can't make our people worse off to help those fleeing bad conditions themselves.

You guys should be excited if you are who you say you are. We are going to make America great again, we are going to make America safe again, we are going to make America RICH again!

For people of all races and creed, as long as you are AMERICAN!

we are going to make America safe again,
Right now, this country is safer than it was under George W. Bush, George H. Bush, or Ronald Reagan. Life expectancy is up, and the crime rate, murder rate, and police & military deaths are all down significantly under Obama.

Do you really want to return to the "glory days" of 2007, where we had 60% more police deaths and 3600% more military deaths than we had in 2015? What kind of person would want that??

I'd like to believe this is the case, any links for these statistics? I'm legitimately curious.

Violent crime down significantly since Obama took office -- yes it's looking like the 2015 stats will show an uptick from 2014's historic lows, but the numbers will still be lower than they were under Bush/Bush/Reagan.

Law enforcement deaths -- HISTORIC lows under Obama.

Military deaths -- our soldiers are safer now than any time since 2001.

Life expectancy = 78.8 years -- a record high.

Speaking of... whatever happened to Higgs?

He promised to report back honestly from an event somewhere in AZ, scene of some awesome openly racist ####, but I never saw him again.

This was LoanSharks. His literal last post on these boards was asking me directly if I trusted him to give an honest account of the AZ rally back in June. I'm honestly still waiting for it.
