And then hopefully someone who gets a sitdown or one of the moderators will press him on it, and also the double standard he seems to have adopted w/r/t his own personal information. We'll see I guess, but I think there's been a bit of an ebb and flow on the coverage of Trump.  When he trails they give him soft coverage, when he gets close they give him real coverage, the kind they've given candidates from both parties in recent elections.

He's making a "big statement" on it today from his new hotel in DC in front on medal of honor winners.  He'll say Hillary started this in 2008.  He got him to produce it in 2011, and he believes him.  Media will eat it up and the issue will die.  HOOK.LINE.SINKER.

 
The new Trump regime has finally gotten him to comprehend that if he doesn't talk, just read the speeches written for him off the teleprompter, promise a bunch of spending, it's his best shot at winning.

It was always going to get tighter because people are morons and somehow change their minds because of a TV ad or some other BS, then he was gifted Clinton sick video.

If Trump does more Jimmy Fallon and other talk shows this thing will be dead even in all the battleground states going into the debates.

The pressure and stakes on that thing is going to be amazing.

I dunno. I understand what you're saying, the media has a lot to be embarrassed about this cycle.  It is mind-boggling that Fahrenholdt's stuff on the Trump Foundation isn't leading the nightly news and dominating the cable networks this week - if that stuff came out about any other candidate the media would absolutely bury them. And they certainly won't give his lies and contradictions on birtherism the coverage it truly warrants.

But all they need to do is get to like 10% of it. Trump always seems to rise in the polls when he's keeping his mouth shut and avoiding racial issues and other controversies.  Whenever he turns to those controversies, even if he intends to put a band-aid on them and even if the media helps by going easy on him, it still seems to remind people of what a sleazy POS he actually is.  We'll see, I guess.

The only way this backfires on him is if the media realizes this is his MO on everything and starts wholesale challenging him on these aggressive-passive responses.  As long as they allow him to be the loud-mouth bully one day who says something ludicrous and then they allow his surrogates to come out the next day and walk back what he said and/or flip the allegation; nothing will change in their coverage.

Given what we've seen so far this cycle you're correct to be skeptical.  Like Tobias, I'm hopeful the combo of the Matt Lauer debacle and the excellent journalism demonstrated in Newsweek and The Atlantic this week signals a change in media coverage of Trump.

He teases this morning a press conference about Obama Birther stuff, seriously, and the news has been showing his empty stage all morning anxiously awaiting him.

The expectations the media has of Trump reminds me of an old Chris Rock bit where he knocks people down a peg for bragging about accomplishing basic human obligations like staying out of prison.  A lot of coverage yesterday praised Trump for discussing an economic plan that included actual numbers, without a whole lot of discussion of how bad and unrealistic the math was.

The economy will grow by 3% under Hillary, but -20% under Trump! I don't know what that little line means, but I know 20 is almost twice as big as 3!

Was half-listening, but heard a poll from last month cited that 7 out of 10 Republicans had at least some doubt that Obama was born in the US, and 2 out of 10 Democrats.  I hope I heard that wrong and there were some serious methodology issues with that poll.

I had an interesting discussion with my gf last night about the tax return thing (if this was already discussed here, sorry)... She thinks he won't release his tax returns because he didn't pay any taxes. Her reasoning - Trump claims to have boatloads of money but there is no record of him giving his own money to charity going on a decade now. The super wealthy will give money to charity for the tax break, among other reasons. Maybe Trump doesn't donate to charity because he doesn't need the tax break and he doesn't need the tax break because he pays no taxes as it is.

I don't know, but I've heard people saying it.

If Trump brought the ugly incident to an end in 2011, why did he continue to push the birther issue well beyond 2011?

Also, why is the Trump campaign ignoring the fact that the state of Hawaii released Obama's short-form birth certificate in 2008? Are they claiming that Hawaii was a co-conspirator in the birther movement? Or are they hinting that certain state governments can't be trusted?

 
Listening to these Medal of Honor winners, it's like they're talking about a completely different man than the Donald Trump we have all heard. I guess their hatred of Barack Obama, and what they perceive as liberalism, is so strong, that they're willing to support a guy who cares nothing about their values or the Constitution. It's really sad and depressing. 

 
Trump tells the media he has a big announcement and it's a 30 minute commercial of military endorsements. He continues to make the media do anything he wants. If Hillary had tried this they would have cut away after 5 minutes.

I think it's a few things.

A. He is not worth billions as he claims.

B. He successfully uses shelters to avoid paying taxes. Many are probably legal, but it doesn't look good when you claim to be worth billions and are probably paying less than the average FBG.

C. We'd be able to see how exactly he is using his "charity" for personal use.

“Nice hotel,” he opened his remarks, which were part of a ceremony honoring Medal of Honor winners. He went on to call it one of the best hotels, maybe, in the world.

If we put the thing to rest in 2011, why did Trump continue to bring it up in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016? And if we put this thing to rest, why is Trump being forced to address the issue now?

Notice that Hillary is no longer being asked to defend her brief dalliance with birtherism? That's because she completely disavowed it in 2008. Notice that no one is demanding that president Obama clarify his position on John McCain's citizenship? That's because Obama distanced himself from the McCain birthers in 2008. But Trump has never, ever disavowed his connection to the Birther movement.

Trump's support is "I'm a white guy who didn't go to college and shouldn't have to because I should be making $100K but I'm not because of the Mexicans." And their wives.

Meanwhile those that went to college and benefit from low unemployment, a stable housing market and a healthy stock market are cucks.

What I fear is that this was designed to reassure suburban white women who lean Republican that he is not racist. And it will be effective because a lot of people have short memories. The media is a willing participant- the headline from this will be "Trump says Obama born in US!" Not that he blamed Hillary (falsely), not that he took credit (falsely). And at the same time he got in the commercial for his hotel and Medal of Honor winners making Trunp sound like a patriot and great military leader. 

Once again this has the fingerprints of Kellyanne Conway all over it. Her whole strategy since she signed on has been to get white women to vote for Trump. And it's working.

Obama brought the whole birther thing on himself. Just like Trump is bringing the whole "real net worth" thing on himself by not releasing taxes and Hillary is bringing the whole health issue on herself by not releasing medical records. Of the three issues, only the question of citizenship bears on the constitutional requirement for the presidency. Obama could have avoided the whole thing by releasing the long form. It was stupid not to do so. (and the birther conspiracy doesn't make any sense anyway, as his mother was a US citizen - it doesn't matter where he was born.) BTW - if Obama was white and played the birth certificate the same way, he would have still been attacked. Not racist - politics at its ugliest - which it seems, is all we have anymore.
