***Official*** Fallout 76 Thread (1 Viewer)

From what I've read the people who have actually played the game are liking it so far.  I'm sure I'll end up buying it at some point.

Installed the beta yesterday morning. Didn't realize it was only from 7pm-11pm EST. So I didn't get a chance to play yet.

On Xbox, do I need to do anything other than preorder to unlock beta? Trying to log in and getting same “wait a bit longer” message I got last week.

Beta was a separate install. It was from 7p-11p EST yesterday. Not sure when they are opening it again.

Did the same thing.  You need to install the Fallout 76 BETA game, instead of just the Fallout 76.  Unfortunately it looks like they are limiting play, next window will be 2 hours on Saturday, ugh.

Hopefully the BETA will open up a bit more next week when PC and PS4 come into play.  This schedule is definitely not making me sad that Xbox was the guinea pig.

How does this work in terms of servers? Is it like a traditional MMORPG where you pick a server, and if you want to play with friends they pick the same server? Is PC going to be playing with console players?

yep reviews please.   I was planning on waiting awhile and just sticking with rdr2 for the winter. I'm not sure I can handle doing both games at the same time (not enough time in my life).

If its all muitplayer I probably won't even get it....

Sounds like it's going to be similar to Fortnite, this is a big pass from after reading the Kotaku review.

No single play option that I am aware of. No NPCs.

There are plenty of reviews from people who have played the BETA on YouTube right now.  I listened to a few and more were pretty happy with it.  They were all excited to play it again.  It sounded like if you enjoyed Fallout 4 then you'll enjoy this as well.  The multiplayer part sounded like it was enjoyable.

Depends on what you consider single play.  You don't have to team up with anyone, though it sounds like it will be significantly harder if you don't.  I think the NPCs is going to take some getting used to and is also probably not going to be that big of a deal overall.

I don't know, the NPC dialog and different options based on how you play make it a RPG to me. Add in the fun of getting killed and losing all your stuff...pretty hard pass for me. I was not a fan of ESO and this sounds like it's the next step towards full on MMO game.

ETA seems like it's going to be there version of Rust with the addition of quests.

Unfortunately the small BETA windows means I have not had a chance to play yet because the time they picked Wed was terrible for me. Hopefully I can do one of the ones this weekend and give some first hand impressions.

Have the beta downloaded. I get a “login failed. This account lacks the required entitlements.”

is that because the server is down and can’t validate my preorder status?

hope so

So if you pre-order on PC (bought it for one of my sons) from Bethesda you shouldn't need to do anything else to get BETA access correct? He wasn't able to play in today's PC beta session but looks like he'll be able to on Tues.

He'll still need the BETA code, which they should send if they haven't already.  Then he'll have to install the Bethesda Launcher, then pre-load the game from the launcher.

From what I've read if you buy from Bethesda you don't get a code but it's not super clear. He has the launcher and game is pre-loaded.

Yup, me too. Loved everything Fallout since the first one back in... jeez, 97 or 98? But I'm firmly in the "single player only" camp of videogaming. These video impressions make it clear this isn't the game for me. If they go the ESO route and make it viable for single player, maybe at some point I pick it up.
This is me as well. What I keep coming back to is this isn't Fallout 5--this seems to be a transition game between 4 and 5, which we probably won't see until the next Gen consoles arrive.

I may check it out, but there are so many games I want to play now and I have so little gaming time available to me, that I will be hard pressed to give it much attention.

Played the Beta for about an hour today. Took me almost 30 mins to get out of the Vault because I am OCD about searching for loot and reading terminals and stuff. There are a few small things to find in the vault but I wouldn’t spend a ton of time there again.

Initial impression was this is the best looking fallout game by far, vibrant colors, lots of vegetation in the initial start area. Amazing change in setting and feel too, since this is set so much earlier in the timeline there are still intact vehicles, tires on cars, etc. While they definitely recycled some of the wrecked car models from Fallout 4, nice to see new variety. Also found some giant tank with two large turret barrels I can’t ever recall seeing in a game before. The map shows you where all the other players are so easy to avoid them if you want, one guy that had just started as well asked me to partner but I declined.

Definitely lots of new enemy variety, you encounter some new robots early on that are weak little eye beam shooting bucket things that can also jump on your head inflicting damage. I beat those to pieces with my fists to save ammo and then struck out blind for the nearest compass marking. Started picking flowers, looting suitcases and ran into another new enemy when I took some honey from beehives and got attacked by a swarm of bees that killed me. If you die you can respawn at certain mappoints, the map and compass mark your death spot do you can head back if you want to collect your loot. From what I can tell, the only penalty to dying is you lose all your junk.

if you hated the crafting aspect of any of the previous games then I don’t think you will like this. Not the camp/settlement part (I didn’t get that far) but like modifying weapons, making chems, etc. The gameplay reminded me a lot of a toned down version of hardcore mode from Vegas and F4. You will have to watch your thirst, rest, hunger, etc.

Would have played longer but the game started having Beta issues and bogging down on me badly so I dropped. Hopefully I will make it a lot farther next go.

Anyone in the BETA from the PC crowd?  I thought I had everything pre-loaded but now it looks like I'm loading another 40 GB file and my speed has mysteriously slowed to a crawl.  Not sure it will download in time for me to even get in.

Xbox had the same slow patch. Prevented me from playing last night.

Made it into the BETA yesterday.  It was basically Fallout 4 survival mode in a different location and no human NPCs.  Perk cards were interesting, I think I like the way they have it set up.  Getting everything from holo tapes and notes might get tedious.  I found myself waiting a few times because I was listening to one holo tape and stumbled across another so I didn't want to cut off the one I was listening to.  Because everyone was starting out together I saw quite a few people in the beginning areas but didn't really interact with them at all.  Later I helped someone during an event, but we weren't teamed up, we were just in the same area together when it happened.  Thirst and hunger are a bit of a PITA, but generally I like more realism so that didn't bother me much.  As usual I am constantly over encumbered because I pick up every piece of trash available to scrap.  I picked up a mutation when I got some higher rads.  From what I understood it is supposed to go away after you use Rad Away, but mine stayed behind so now I have marsupial traits.  -4 Int, + Carry Weight, and + Jump height.

I forgot about playing last night. Damn!

Wondering how the "camp" works. I think you can open it up, build, and leave it in place while you go out and adventure. I also believe that you can add vendors, just like FO4, that can sell your ####. That's my early-game goal.

However, I ran into a camp kit someone had dropped. it only showed the kit and not the entire base. So, I am not sure how the camp / base thing actually works in MP.

Spoiler question from the Rhodes gunsmith thing spoilered above:

How do you free the sailor in the basement? He says he's chained to the bed, but I didn't see anything and there was no option to unlock him in the dialogue. I shot near his feet, hoping I'd hit some sort of invisible chain. Apparently, I hit his foot. He died (wimp!).

Another question: Does anyone know how the random encounters work? I have missed a number of them because I was doing something else or didn't react quick enough. Example: near one of the farms outside of Rhoades two farmers (I think) we shooting at a third feller. I reckon I needed to talk to the third feller as he ran off, but I wasn't quick enough (talking to the two farmers got me two rifles pointed at my face).

Will this eventually respawn?

ETA: neat board, what happened to the spoiler tag?

I did not make my own CAMP yet.  Although I ran across other people's CAMPs, full buildings sometimes with crafting stations that I was allowed to use.

I didn't get home from work until really late last night, totally forgot about playing. I will try to jump in this weekend, most likely Saturday as going to the Bronco's & Texans on Sunday.

Reviews I've gotten from friends, watched and read online have all been underwhelming.  Right now, I'm leaning towards a pass on this game.  A discount may change my mind, but the best thing I've heard is that it'll probably be fun with friends, but boring solo and that doesn't bode well for me, considering my odd work/play schedule rarely gives me time to play with friends these days.

Do NPCs do that much for your gameplay?  I will say I would prefer them to not but it isn't really THAT different.  I've been enjoying it single player in the BETA.  I think if you go in with friends trying to do the story arc then it won't work as well, but if you go in with friends just to have some fun kill some sorched, super mutants, etc. then it will be pretty fun.

When the BETA is so underwhelming that you take someone who was excited for it and you turn them off with it, that sounds bad.  I wasn't on the fence of buying.  I was on the fence of whether I'd buy it Xbox or PC.  Now I'm firmly on the fence of buying it at all and will wait to hear if opinions change after full release.

Obviously, playing with friends was never a selling point of Fallout for me, since every other Fallout game has been a single player experience.  But when you're still forced in a server with other players, whether you play solo or not, you're still going to get grieved by other players, whether you want to engage with them or not.  Perhaps that actually helps me make my decision for the platform, since I'm sure PC will eventually have mods that will allow for an actual single player experience (if you actually want zero interaction in a world that's meant to have some) - and mods and private servers are reportedly still over a year out.  So we're looking 2020 before the game becomes playable for people who never wanted a MP Fallout?

But to answer your question, yes NPCs do make the world feel inhabited.  Substituting those NPCs for actual players may have been intended to make the world feel more alive, but in doing so, it may have made it empty.   I'm sure that there's some interesting lore to explore, but will you get the same sort of game play out of that as you do the other Fallout games?

Again, this is just the impression I've gotten from BETA impressions from others.  Since I hadn't decided what system I was buying on, I never pre-ordered, so I didn't get a chance to play it for myself.  We'll see what changes from the full release.  I will follow the thread, because I am interested in hearing what others think after they play it.

ETA  I find it amusing that the PC BETA was so bad that it literally uninstalled itself from PCs when it first went live.

Played some more tonight. Zero multiplayer, for better or worse.

level 7

learning curve seems a bit more steep than regular game. And everything (so far) seems a bit more desperate / urgent, which I like.

I guess this is the statement I don't get.  I would be curious to know what they felt was so underwhelming.  I've played two BETA sessions and enjoyed myself.  I even traded with another player last night.  There hasn't been any griefing yet that I have seen, but I'm sure some will try to do it.  It's hard to put that as a negative when I haven't seen any instances of it yet.  I don't know how well Bethesda's system will work yet, but I'm willing to find out.

If you don't want to get the game or don't like it, that's fine.  Everyone likes and dislikes different things, but from my perspective it has been pretty much like a regular Fallout game or at least not that different.  I have a feeling that Bethesda will add some NPCs at some point, not a lot, but I think it is ripe for bringing in a faction later like the BoS or the Enclave.

My son has had multiple encounters where higher level or multiples have tried to kill him and steal his stuff
