***Official*** Fallout 76 Thread (1 Viewer)

Play for a few hours today.

griefers get bounties in their heads

I collected one today. He didn’t realize I had a pretty decent scoped gun on me.

They might need to turn down the weapon degradation setting a bit. I am blowing through weapons and resources to fix said weapons.

Had some fun last night near the power plant that's south of the starting area. There's a work bench there that you can "claim." I really don't understand the ins and outs of it, but apparently someone can dispute the claim. It comes preloaded with a bunch of resources you can use to build defenses. Then, they send waves of bad guys against you.

Also, there is a pretty expansive mission related to the Power Plant. It was a bit overwhelming doing it solo (there's an hour time limit if that tells you anything). Briefly teaming up with people to clear missions is pretty cool, though I need to adjust my chat settings. Had a nerdy guy start randomly talking to me last night. He wasn't even on my team (apparently there's a proximity setting for team chat).

Got a chance to play the beta yesterday thanks to a friend who gave me a code on PC.  I almost did a write-up of my experience with the game, but it turned more into a rant than a review, so I decided to scrap it.  Long story short, I'm still underwhelmed.  My current status is that I'll likely wait until it's at least half price before I buy into the game.  And if the the beta reviews and Youtube videos I've watched are any indication, I don't think it's gonna take long for it to drop in price.

I really don't want to hate on the game.  I've always loved Fallout games and initially looked forward to it.  I'm still optimistic that it'll get better.  But I just won't be buying at launch.

I'll continue to monitor the thread to read your Fallout experiences.

I actually would be pretty interested in your thoughts.  They seem pretty different from my experience, or perhaps I'm not as bothered by some of the same stuff.  It is different, it is a bit more clunky in some ways, and I think better in others.

I am not happy that they haven't added buckskin armor and a coonskin cap to go with my blackpowder rifle. I was going to run around as a sniper version of the WVU Mountaineer mascot.

I haven't played but isn't all pvp voluntary? Videos I've seen show that you don't take any damage from people shooting at you unless you shoot back. Is that incorrect?

Also when can we pre download on Xbox? If anyone knows.

Nevermind. It's started already. My dumb Xbox kept trying to install on the main hard drive instead of the external. Loading now.

I hope the wiki pages get up to speed quickly. there's a bit of a learning curve imo.

I played most of Beta in 2 places: the airport and the Nuclear Plant down south. The latter has a workbench you can take over, then start building a base. They give you enough resources to get things going pretty quickly. Towards the end, I was harvesting my own lead which was pretty cool. Apparently, if you finish the lengthy quest that's attached to the Nuclear Plant that involves bringing it back online, you can really build some interesting stuff. For example, there's a VertiBot pad...

Overall, this feel like a much more desperate game of survival (I played survival mode on FO4 on the second run through). Resources are incredibly scarce. Death has consequences.

Yes, that's right.  You can block individual users from seeing you on the map and interacting with you as well.

Also, I noticed a quest called Hunter/Hunted.  I think it was basically you needed four players to accept the quest and then you needed to hunt a player and then another one of the four was hunting you.

I got zero BETA playing time.

What kind of builds are you guys going with?

I was thinking some kind of sniper/assassin.
Going to go sniper, that is generally my go to with Fallout games as an initial character.  I was using this site to help figure out what stats I need and some of the perk cards, that is the build I'm thinking of.  I don't think they have everything loaded yet, but it was a pretty good reference.

The perk system is a bit different. Not even sure how it works yet.

Melee seems to be a viable option in this version, at least so far. It's definitely helpful in the early stages.

I spent most of my points in things that gave me more XP, or lessened my carry weight, or made me less hungry / thirsty. I overspent on charisma because I didn't understand the cards / slot system (I have too many charisma cards / points and no where to spend them). Not sure how that's going to impact things.

Not one to play these games I actually enjoyed the last Fallout (4?)  for the most part. Building was stupid, and I'm not sure I actually finished the game. I think I had like 2 missions left.

I'm all in on Red Dead so this will make the rotation eventually

Do you get multiple card slots under each S.P.E.C.I.A.L. category? Right now I have like 7 points in Charisma but only can slot in one card (so the rest is somewhat wasted).

I wish I could finish Red Dead before this hit, but I am enjoying taking my time with that game.

Me too.  I'm 30 hours in and still in Chapter 3.  Sometimes I literally get nothing done in the game

My schedule just does not allow me to game as much as before so 2 BIG open world games at the same time just won't happen :)

I would not even have considered this if I didn't enjoy the last one.   Which was a surprise for me

each card is worth a certain amount of SPECIAL points.  You can load up as many that will be equal or less than your special amount.  If you get two of the same card you can merge them but it will up the point total necessary to equip.  So say you get the first Pack Rat card.  You need 1 in STR to use it.  That would be the only STR card you could use.  When you up your STR you could add an additional 1 point STR card, or if you got another Pack Rat you could merge them which would make it cost 2 STR.

This game is clearly not perfect and will have lots of flaws. It won't be a real successor to the Fallout throne for single players probably.

But my girlfriend and I played a ton of Fallout 4 and co-op'd a ton of 7 Days to Die, which was a horribly flawed survival action crafting zombie game--clunky controls, bad graphics--but it was fun multiplayer.

FO74 seems like a weird mixture of those two concepts so we're looking forward to it. Especially because we have some good friends to play with, a husband/wife duo we game with sometimes (Elder Scrolls Online dungeons). So that part should be a blast, with a consistent four person group playing.

No idea how the servers work. Is it a persistent world as long as you stick to the same server, with the same squad, over multiple play sessions?

Took 15-20 minutes for us to get onto the server, another half hour or so to mess with character creation, then we played for a couple hours. Love it so far, the multiplayer aspect is a blast and brings a whole new dynamic.

Maybe I'll notice it more as time goes by, but I gotta say the lack of NPC's hasn't bothered me yet. Partly it's the lore aspect--it makes sense as one of the first vaults to open on schedule that you'd be mostly alone. And partly it's having friends to play with--that social aspect might be enough to give the world the life it needs, which is clearly what Bethesda is hoping.

We didn't stray super far from the vault yet so not surprisingly we ran into a bunch of other people. Didn't hear anyone talking once we became a "team" with team chat, wondering if that's the case with anyone who teams up or if the people we saw were just really quiet or mic-less.

Not that I want to talk to randos necessarily, but I heard people chatting before I teleported to my teammate and joined up, and then dead silence besides us afterwards despite plenty of people around, so I think it's the chat settings. Would be cool to at least be able to say things like "hey there's a gun safe in that white house, guys" or give a warning, or whatever, idk. Or just exchange what's ups and inquire about trade needs.

I saw 8-10 different people around the same level near the vault getting their feet wet, no PvP that I witnessed. Might just be low level noobs feeling it out, but I think it's going to shape up to be much more of a cooperative experience than competitive, even between strangers. Some guy was getting mauled by two Scorched and a Mongrel while just flailing with his fists and we swooped in from over a hill raining lead from our crappy pipe guns to save the day, then I dropped him an extra hatchet I had and moved along. It was awesome.

My launcher is telling me I have to buy the game again.  The Bethesda Launcher blows.  This whole release/BETA has been a #### show.

Damn. I wish mine would just auto update like it is supposed to
My problem was that it placed the file on the Xbox hard drive instead of the external. So when it came time to install the game there was no space. I had to delete the placeholder and "reinstall" to get it to go to the external.

I have this in hand but I am going to wait to install it.  I'm knee deep in RDR2 right now, and once I leave a game, I rarely come back to it.

I know you guys were all just dying for my status here, sorry to keep you all waiting.

You’re the reason I ever even tried fallout so your lack of enthusiasm is telling. I have a sealed ps4 copy sitting on my kitchen counter and am similarly occupied with RDR2. Still. It sure I’ll enjoy this game as he BETA felt rather meh.

It's not lack of enthusiasm.  Just no time to multitask at videogames.  I am psyched for this.  Just pacing.

Really liking it so far. Only gripe is so much of the story lies in recordings that are a pain to pay attention to when you're grouped up with others.

Level 8 right now. Focusing on STR/PER/AGI so far but will need some intelligence for crafting too. So far focusing on two-handed melee, hunting rifles, and pistols. Have the low level melee and rifleman perks but other than that it's mostly quality of life perks reducing weight, hunger, and thirst. Plus lockpicking etc. Since big melee weapons are slow you can't really afford to miss up close so VATS has been coming in handy for that.

Wandered around for about 2 hours last night outside the vault. Didn't see a single person. Which is fine. A bunch of feral ghouls and some Commie Lazer bots around. Just exploring this new fallout landscape which was always my favorite part of the game.

Trying to get a feel for camps. I set one up accidentally. Is that permanently there now? The hunger and thirst aspect is a nice touch. Feels like the survivor portion of New Vegas.

I'm liking it. My friends will be on tonight and then I can figure out the multiplayer part of this.
