I've always heard a lot about Opeth and recently heard a really good song on Sirius. I decided to check them out and am listening to Damnation on youtube and the whole album is mellow. What should I listen to from them?

Blackwater Park, Still Life, Ghost Reveries.

:goodposting:

And I'd add "My Arms, Your Hearse" just for the songs "When" and "Demon of the Fall". "Damnation" is a pretty fine album though.

Thank you both. I did like Damnation and listened to the whole album.

Damnation was produced and heavily influenced by Steven Wilson, who is also very much worth listening to. Recommend poking around his extensive catalog and see if anything grabs you. Particularly the later Porcupine Tree releases.

The difference with the satanic bands is that they dont pretend its anything more than performance art and dont pretend its real to sell.

Outside of a nutcase here or there.

I think there is one question we really need to answer....

Is metal just a sound or the spirit of the musicians?

AC/DC is always the big question mark. In my opinion their sound is unequivocally hard rock but their spirit is totally metal. They transcend that boundary.

Same with GnR in many ways as well.

Good question.

I think AC/DC is 100% hard rock. They do have a punk rock / metal sensibility - there's no doubt. But metal has to be about the sound. AC/DC - much like Led Zeppelin - has a sound deeply rooted in blues chord progressions. The blues inform a lot of hard rock, but the blues don't really shape the sound of any major metal bands that I can think of off-hand.

Guns 'N' Roses is a little more difficult, because they have riffs that definitely feature a metal sound (Welcome to the Jungle comes to mind). However, almost every Roses song I hear makes me think of hard rock - not metal.

Blues to me is more dependent on the tone of the compositions rather than a specific sound. You can infuse a blues sensibility within many different musical genres. All rock is essentially based on the groundwork laid out by the old bluesmen. I hear a lot of blues in metal, but the heavier it is the more difficult it is to pick up as the heavy death/black bands are heavily influenced by classical as well. Some of the compositions are so mind bending there is no main genre inspiration.

Although personally metal to me is more about the spirit than it is the sound. That may just be be because im a musician in the more extreme genres.

I've played in large bands of all kinds of genres, but I'm not sure that's necessarily relevant here. Objectively, I believe the majority of critics would agree that AC/DC is a hard rock band without a moment's thought.

Its relevant to my personal opinion. I know the difference between the different soundsbut the metal attitude no matter the music does help attract me to it

Right. I'm not saying your opinion is invalid.
