***OFFICIAL*** FFA Heavy Music Thread - No banal, anodyne "Dad Rock" BS here.. (1 Viewer)

Yeah. Some bands NEED to evolve. Some don’t.
Slayer is a band that always stuck to its roots without a lot of change.

That said, I don't feel a burning urge to own the last few Slayer recordings. So it's a double-edged sword.

(By the way, double-edged swords are super metal)

Plus, when they did attempt to deviate and adapt to the times, the result (Diabolus in Musica) was received about as well as an album of Tom Araya burrito farts or note-perfect Lawrence Welk covers would have been.

I agree....slayer hasnt done anything great since seasons in the abyss

My 14 year old niece is a budding metalhead (she also listens to pop and other crap) and wanted to go see a live show.  Now that she's old enough, my brother decided to take her to see a show and asked if I wanted to come along.  As the niece and I are super close, I was all-in.  Now, typically when we got to non-GA shows, the Ox and his cohorts go for the cheapest available tickets.  If there's a seat in a neighboring county you can get and listen to the show via a drive-in movie speaker and watch through binoculars for $5, that's where they want to sit.  For this show, being his daughter's native journey, he shot the lock off the wallet and we invested in $85 (plus fees) seats in row 3 floor.

For Five Finger Death Punch.  I knew little to nothing about these guys and had always chalked them up as poser mall-rock BS.  So, last night, I looked at recent set lists and downloaded their most common concert songs off of Amazon Music.  Fired it up in the car on the way to work this morning and....

Dear God, these guys suck.  I hate them.  I mean REALLY hate them.  I don't know if it's just this cluster of songs (their hits?) or what, but one after another, they rolled out of the speakers and made me want to drive my car off the road.  Formulaic riffs/choruses, uninteresting melodies, meat-head HS-level lyrics.  There's literally nothing I liked about any of it, not even remotely.  They're worse than Avenged Sevenfold.  So happy I dropped $120 on a ticket to see these goons and Breaking Benjamin.  Someone shoot me now.

Also, I forgot to mention, the show is in Tampa, so I either have to drive 2h 15m each way or get a (crappy) hotel room and drop another $100+.  By the time all is said and done, this show is going to cost me probably $300-400 to see and an overnight trip followed by a long, hungover drive home on a Sunday morning.  #### me.

Sounds like you’re [under and] over it.

Blech. Yeah, to be fair, teens aren't always ready for the truly heavy ####.

I don't know that she ever will be.  She likes melodic metal, but there are several bands I would have loved to have seen with her that she digs - i.e. Volbeat (her favorite), or even Sevendust, Metallica, etc.  These guys lick balls.

Cool. Has she heard Rival Sons?

I never understood the love for 5 finger.   The songs are boring, boring, boring.   The only I like is the guitar sound.  The guitar sound is pretty awesome.   Unfortunately, the songs are so boring that I can't even enjoy that for long.

Your niece has good taste.  Volbeat is my favorite "newish" band.

I've heard the name, Five Finger Death Punch, but never their music. Gave a few tunes a listen and yeah, that's pretty bad. Very generic. The lyrics to the song Fake had me :lmao:

I've listened to 5 songs so far and none were good. "Remember Everything" made me want to throw up. I had to cut it off after that, still can't bring myself to listen to the other 6-7 songs I downloaded.

Just discovered a very cool band on Octane (Sirus/XM station with new metal/hard rock).

Ghost. And the song is called Rats......this is a killer ####### band man. Love the old school influence’s I hear throughout their stuff.

Have fun at the concert! :lmao:
I'm going to need to drink 100 beers to get through this.  Not only is that going to provide a terrible example for my HS-aged niece, but it's going to necessitate dropping a bundle on a hotel room (decent hotel nearby is $200/nt) and on $10 beers.  This is going to end up costing me $500 AND a 2+ hour hungover drive home on Sunday.  To see FFFDP (yes, I added an extra "F", I'm sure you guys can figure it out  )

They also have easily (IMO) the best shtick in rock music going right now with Papa/Cardinal Copia and the Nameless Ghouls.)  Youtube the #### out of them, there's a ton of stuff out there.

They’re on a mini-tour right now ahead of the new album dropping in June(?). Great band to see live...check ‘em out if you get the chance.

Ok so watching some Youtube live stuff. So are they serious? Or is this pure schtick? The whole satanic cult stuff is a ####### hoot.

Gotta read up on this. And what is this whole Papa stuff. Love the music though. Really great stuff.

And no Florida dates.....sigh.

I don't entirely know.  I assumed shtick, but Forge may have genuine Satanic ideals, who knows?  Those zany Scandinavians...

No one even knew their names (or at least Tobias Forge's name, nobody really knows who is behind the masks on any given night, Dave Grohl was reported to have been a Ghoul at one point) until fairly recently.

I mean, look at the lyrics to "He Is"...

We're standing here by the abyss
And the world
Is in flames

Two star-crossed lovers reaching out
To the beast
With many names

He is
He’s the shining and the light
Without whom I cannot see
And he is
Insurrection, he is spite
He’s the force that made me be
He is
Nostro dis pater
Nostr'alma mater
He is

We’re hiding here inside a dream
And all our doubts
Are now destroyed

The guidance of the morning star
Will lead the way
Into the void

He is
He’s the shining and the light
Without whom I cannot see
And he is
Insurrection, he is spite
He’s the force that made me be
He is
Nostro dis pater
Nostr'alma mater
He is

He is
He’s the shining and the light
Without whom I cannot see
And he is
Insurrection, he is spite
He’s the force that made me be
He is
He’s the shining and the light
Without whom I cannot see
And he is
The disobedience that holds us together
He is
Nostro dis pater
Nostr'alma mater
And we are falling
Over the precipice

And you listen to the song and it's one of the most perfectly written, painfully gorgeous compositions you've ever heard.  The music and melody themselves are soaring...uplifting; what hymns strive to be, and it's a love letter to Satan.

love the tongue in cheek approach by ghost. while the new image of the front man is kinda odd, I like the changing name/make up schtik. I like it when slipknot does it and I think Kiss should of maybe rotated some faces as well.

I just got into Ghost recently as well and am really liking them.

He Is is one of the catchiest metal songs I have heard in years, and the new song, Rats, is really good. Looking forward to the new record!

She might like this type of stuff.

Tremonti-Bringer Of War

Hated Creed but always didn't mind his playing. This is very clearly pop/melodic metal but it ain't half bad for what it is.

Tremonti always was the one guy in Creed who was actually "metal."
Ya know before creed hit the big time....a buddy of mine who would travel down to atlanta and work in the bars on weekends brought home their first disc...we played the #### out of it...then they hit the big time.....i probanly lost all board metal cred....but yes i listened to creed before it was cool....and before it was cool to say they,suck.........lol
