never got into them.....hook me up with the tasty tracks
Start with Davidian, Ten Ton Hammer, Old, and Locust. There are a TON of great MH songs, but these 4 will give you a little bit of a cross-section of their oeuvre while staying in the "hits." If you like these, there's a whole lot out there.

Gojira rules. Their new stuff isn't nearly as heavy, but somehow is just as good.
I agree that the new stuff isn't as heavy.

Although I do like Magma more than plenty of other CDs by other artists that are heavier.

They're f**king awesome live. Robb Flynn can work a crowd like few other front men in rock. You'll be ready to run through a wall by the end of the show.
I'm jacked. And The Fox Theater is my favorite venue to see metal.

Less heavy doesn't necessarily mean less than, if the band is talented and the songs are good.  Gojira checks both boxes (but Flying Whales is still probably my favorite song of theirs.)

Lost in Vegas guys liked Roots Bloody Roots but weren't enthusiastic about Max's vocals.

Has anyone seen a video of a song they really disliked?
Flat out dislike?  I don't think so, but they don't really dig the growl vocals, so I think that Meshuggah was one of their least favorite, and I don't think they loved the Dream Theater song much either.

Yeah, they're lack of enthusiasm for Max Cavalerras vocals got me thinking about it. It's cool. Even big metal fans have issues with growling vocals.

The opposite is true too.  I didn't know many people who could tolerate King Diamond either despite my pimping his bands constantly to other metal fans in HS and college.

Sure, but part of me feeling old is not connecting to the new stuff.  I try to branch out, but get sucked into albums from bands who have been around for 20-30 years.
I agree, my taste in "newer" bands gravitate to more hard rock style - like rival sons, royal blood, etc.... although I have been in love with mastodon since I heard blood mountain and this gojira band has "it"

Thought this song/album was pretty good. Purple Hill Witch - Celestial Cemetery. Sabbathian. And they’re from Norway (so you know it’s ####### good).

I really liked this too, and this is the stuff that I tend to gravitate to more now.  Usually what I do is look through the site I use by genres for the year and try to find some heavy psych, stoner metal, stuff like that more than the death metal that seems to populate the lists I see.

A couple others that I came across in the same vein (one had Purple Hill Witch as a 'similar artist' on Spotify too)

Devil's Witches - Black Cauldron

Psychedelic Witchcraft - Wicked Dream

I will look through my list later and see if there are others from this year that stood out to me.

I present - Fu Manchu - stoner rock, skateboards, doobies, el Caminos, long hair, tasty fuzzy riffs. Brant Bjork where are you?? (dude from Kyuss next project)

Evil Eye - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqYeedwEA4E

Mongoose  - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cf_OE9qgN48

Grendel, Snowman - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4G_0yQk_KUs

King of the Road - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qk4p97PFIFY

Hell on Wheels - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7k0aiI1_m14

Drive - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUyND1_cgJQ

Laserbl'ast - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_bsRuvybCQ

my personal favorite album is - the action is go!

I think this is my metal AotY.
SOU agrees... http://www.metalsucks.net/2017/12/11/the-wsou-staffs-top-fifteen-metal-albums-of-2017/

Thank God for the Internet so I can tune into that station every now and again.  I like Liquid Metal on SXM and everything, but growing up, SOU was the end-all, be-all.  I think it was the only station of its kind anywhere in the US (except on Sundays.)

At one point, I had all of my car's FM presets set to 89.5 just so if you hit a button by mistake, there'd be no interruption in the flow of sweet, sweet metal (although sometimes, I would keep #5 or #6 set to 92.3 so I could hear Stern without having to roll the dial.)

Best station ever. Someone told me they heard one of my band's songs on there once. I never did get to hear it though.

The worst is when they have a game on when you don't expect it.

It really was.  Sundays, you knew what to expect and just put a tape in right away.  On a random Wednesday when you're going to the bar or something and you'd turn the car on and hear...

"The 3-2 to Johnson.... is low and away - he walks, and now the Pirates have runners on the corners with one out here in the 4th..."

....and just literally groan aloud : "Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!......."  :lmao:

OK, a topic that needs to be discussed here, and this is really the only place for it.

Arch Enemy - "Nemesis" (my favorite AE tune.)  First link live in Tokyo with Angela on vocals, second link live at Wacken with Alissa on vocals.

Leaving aside for the moment how gorgeous the lead guitar melodies are on this song and how F#$%ING good Arch Enemy is live... two questions on the vocalists.

1) Who's hotter?

2) Who sings it better?
1) The second one - she stalks around all metal-like.

2) Both are as bad as anything can sound.  0-0 tie.

In a seven day period, I helped indoctrinate four youngsters into their first pits. At the Victim's Family / Jello Biafra / Les Claypool show we knocked around with my best friend's daughter, and then last Saturday I took my son and his two giant cousins to see three cover bands (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath). Fun stuff, and this 50 year old body is sore :)

Going through some of Stereogum’s metal albums of the year and I’m pretty late to the party on Demonic Death Judge’s (not fake) Seaweed. It rips.

I've never been a huge metal fan (apart from some Judas Priest tunes), but I revisited E5150 + The Mob Rules a few days ago, and really like it. Can you folks direct me to similar songs (doesn't have to be Sabbath/Dio)?

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Jesus, I've never understood the appeal of cookie-monster metal, even when it came out in the '90's. I see it hasn't changed much.

I wonder how self aware these people are, do they see the caricature nature of what they're doing?

Sounds like you might lean more towards Power Metal. Some great songs from Rainbow (with Dio) like Kill the King and Stargazer. Maybe even some Deep Purple songs too. Obviously, there's Iron Maiden. Old Scorpions songs like Steamrock Fever and Sails of Charon. Queensryche songs like Queen of the Reich and Warning Other bands that might fit the mold but I never really followed were Helloween and Manowar
