***OFFICIAL*** Guitar Guys Thread -- all axes, all the time (2 Viewers)

That's it, this thread has inspired me again to get off my butt. Got my "office/mancave" in the new house cleaned out last night; taking my Yammy over to Guitar Center today to get a setup. It just needs a truss rod adjustment and maybe some slight intonation tweaks. I hate GC and think they're a bunch of sleazy crooks who do shoddy work, but for something like this, it's just so much more convenient to my house than the "real" luthiers and guitar guys, and so I figure I can trust them with this.

How much do they charge for a basic set up?

Roy effing Buchanan. Such great tone.

Not sure if I told this in here before, but guy I worked with is a drummer and has played with tons of musicians, including very famous guys like Les Paul. He posted a picture on facebook of his brother playing a 50s looking blonde Tele in Ireland (he's Irish).

I ask him if it's authentic (probably not real cool to ask), and he says "Yeah it's a 56', he bought it in 1969 from Roy Buchanan".

OK...I a 44 years old, never ever played an instrument in my life, and can not read music....period.

One of my only regrets is not learning the guitar. Can a guy with no musical backround, but a MASSIVE appreciation of music be taught? I have short sausage fingers, but will have lots of time in the winter to practice. I would love to get one or both of my boys to do it with me.

Is there hope?

Oh yeah, I would need a guitar also, as I don't have one. I am not Chet....but would love for him to buy me something nice!

Of course there is! I picked up my first guitar when I was 44 (I just turned 50) and have learned much. My only regret was not learning the guitar when I was a teenager.

If you stick with it, there is much fun in store for you and your boys.

Good advice in this thread for finding a good starter guitar to learn on. I would recommend an acoustic, not too expensive, to get started. Your fingers will get sore from fretting the strings but stick with it and it will (I promise) get better as you develop calluses. This is probably the hardest obsticle to overcome and may be the chief reason why people give up.

And youtube is filled with lessons you could use, if you don't want to hire an instructor.

Amazon has lots of acoustic starter kits you could get for less than $100. You could always PM Chet... hopefully he will finance your venture and you can get something, ;) , really nice.

Awaiting Chets response.

Thanks Jayrok!

Hey Jayrok,

Just curious, you said you pick up the guitar at 44. Just wondering if you had a music backround? Could you read music?
Parm,

You definitely don't need to read music to pick up the guitar. I started playing with an instructor and in garage bands as a teenager; put it down for a decade or so and started playing again more recently. There is tons you can do without reading music -- you just need to learn chords, and "TAB" is a nice cheat way of "reading" guitar music. I never learned to read music, and yet with these basic tools it's enough for me to learn how to play jazz standards and some relatively complex stuff. So don't get hung up on not reading music -- just get a guitar, start with learning the chords and strumming, and the rest will come. GL!

Hey Jayrok,

Just curious, you said you pick up the guitar at 44. Just wondering if you had a music backround? Could you read music?
I don't have a musical background. Didn't take music in school or any type of lesson growing up. I now understand how to read music, though not quick or fluently. I have dabbled in piano but can't sit there and play while I read a sheet of music. But I recognize and understand notes on a staff and the chords they make up. And when a note on the staff is a sharp or flat in the song.

When I started to learn guitar I just learned a few basic chords and how to strum them. As time goes on you want to understand why a song goes from one chord to another and why the order, etc. And chord families, why G goes well with C and D in a progression, and so forth. Learning the circle of 5ths was a big help for me in understanding why songs contain the chords they do.

It's challenging, at first, to play through a song changing chords (let alone playing and singing together). The F chord was hard for me at first so I avoided songs that used it. Now it's one of my favorites (barre chords in general). But after awhile, it just comes to you and it fits. Muscle memory.

Then learn chord shapes up the neck, scales and all that. I like the blues so I learned all the pentatonic positions for major and minor pentatonics. I can get away with soloing on some songs, mostly 12 bar progressions and the like. But I'm not ready to take on the different modes (dorian, and all the 'lidians').

The big thing for me is time. I just don't have it to do what I would like when it comes to practising. Wife and all that.

I learned using a crappy little acoustic that couldn't stay in tune. I bought my first at GC in '09... was a Fender acoustic that has served me well.

Like Otis said, you don't need to worry about reading music in order to enjoy guitar. I prefer writing the lyrics to a song I want to learn on a piece of paper and just writing the chord at the top of the word in a line where it calls for it. Before long, you'll have dozens and dozens of songs you loved growing up that you can pull out and play.

Awesome.

Non playing dad looking for options for my 15 year old son's third electric guitar. He is pretty good and serious about the craft. His band is doing a few gigs as well as local band battles. His current guitar was only $300 new and has a couple frets buzzing from wear. He wants a floyd rose trem system. I am hesitant to purchase on this next guitar as he doesn't have funds to get the thing in tune if support is needed... I understand the learning curve is pretty steep and this would be his main axe. I also am not willing to pay someone $30-60 to change his strings. His ideal guitar is something like a Schecter C1 fr Hellraiser as it has the three-way pickups for added versatility. Is there a good option for moderate tremolo use other than a FR? Also, he likes humbuckers so Strats are pretty much out (and do not stay in tune with tremolo use from what I understand).

My first few guitars had Floyd Rose tremolos . . . I changed the strings myself just fine. They CAN go out of tune easily for heavy pickers, but the fine-tuning nobs on the bridge can get 'em back pretty quickly. Shouldn't require much more maintenance than non-trem'ed guitars . . .

What type of music does he play? Mainly metal?

Floyd Rose trems don't require any extra maintenance. Just change the strings one at a time and there shouldn't be any issues. Don't pull all the strings off at one time or the bridge will drop down into the trem cavity making it a pain to restring. Also, I'd highly recommend a used Ibanez JS1000 for your son. Most versatile guitar I've ever owned. Fits all your sons needs, sounds fantastic, and plays like a dream.

Sadly, I'm neither building nor buying a guitar, but thought I'd share what I was doing. This song is a near-final mix from my band's forthcoming album.

That is a freaking great tune! Huge hook on the chorus. And I really love your singers voice.
Thanks fellas. That's one of mine (we have two singer/guitarist/writers in the band).

Guns & Roses, Metallica, Green Day, Led Zep, Rush, etc. Nothing too heavy. Went to check out a used Schecter Hellraiser for $500. Great looking axe with the FR. Son thought the active EMGs sounded dead :(
My main guitar is a Schecter C-1. Love it. Very versatile. Great sound and plays well.

As others have pointed out, a FR does not make changing strings that difficult. Your son should be able to change them in about 15 minutes.

Fret noise can normally be corrected by taking the guitar for a set up by a pro. It will not be that expensive.

:thanks: , BB.

I think I sing just over half the songs on the record and play lead on 8 of the 9 songs (my buddy only solos at gunpoint).

Awesome on BB's guitar build pics and Kumerica's song. That really is a good song. There are lots of would-be power pop bands that couldn't come close to writing something as catchy or as riffy.

I love power pop. That was so cool. Such a surprise!

Wow, thanks, Rockaction.

I really appreciate everyone's feedback--and obviously, the cheers and encouragement. Album's done being mastered, and we're just waiting on me to finish the interior album art, but it'll be available soon . . . in the meantime, here're a few more for your listening pleasure.

Just listened to Knock Me Down. Wow, that is a freaking great song! If I didn't have so little faith in the American buying public, I'd say that was a surefire hit. I'm dead serious. That tune is as good as any new song I've heard this year. First of all, the song is just catchy as hell with another huge hook on the chorus. I so wish I could write hooks like that. And the guitar work is great. Not in your face, but enough complexity to create a really interesting background. And the solo is just perfect for the vibe the song has created. The bass guitar work really drives the tune as well. And the vocals are just so damn cool. Killer harmonies on the chorus as well. Just a kick ### tune. Seriously, wow.

Over the Moon - another really cool tune. Reminds me of Foo Fighters, which is one of my favorite bands. I am so buying this album once you release it. You should be so stoked about how it's turning out. And will you guys be playing live? I may just have to find a way to catch a show.

Thinking of buying a GS Mini as a small travel/practice guitar. Anyone played one?
Never played one but have read great reviews about them. I have a Taylor Baby which I love as the ultimate toss-around travel and couch guitar. That said something closer to standard scale (which I think the GS Mini is) makes more sense for a working musician.

Thanks O. Need something a little bit bigger than the Baby, but am glad to hear good things about the smaller Taylors. What wood is your Baby? The GS Mini comes in mahogany and spruce top versions.

Thanks for the input on the FR guys. Still looking. Here is a video of my kid's band this Halloween. They are sophomores:

Thanks a lot, BB!

Passed on your very generous praise to my buddy who wrote and sang lead on Knock Me Down, and he was most appreciative (after asking me why I was sharing our music instead of finishing the art work). RE: Gigs, we'll likely play live in Chicago in January/February for an album release party and, I think, a fundraiser at Lincoln Hall (my favorite venue in the city--really hope we get to play there). Don't know if we'll make it to Texas, as everyone in the band (other than me) is married with kids, and tend to ignore my pleas to play out-of-town shows.

Anyway, I had to shift my SoundCloud account to the band name, so all of the song links above have changed. That said, you can hear six of the album's nine tracks at the link below.

https://soundcloud.com/thehardstop

Had a three-plus hour drive today and listened to the three linked tunes several times each (it may have been more like five or six times). I have to say that if the rest of the tunes are half as good, this has the makings of a GREAT album. Over the Moon is like Foo Fighters with Elvis Costello on vocals, which is an AWESOME combo. Not saying that it's derivative or anything, as you guys definitely have a unique sound. The dual vocals really work, as your voices are distinctive, yet close enough stylistically that it doesn't break the flow from one tune to the next.

Looking forward to giving the other three tunes a listen.
Well, I just unlocked all nine of the tunes so you can listen at: https://soundcloud.com/thehardstop

In a few days, I'll have to switch 'em all to private and start a separate thread with individual song links so others can hear; we're getting prepped to share a song/week up until the album release (January/February). Also, I don't wanna take away from the Guitars & Gear talk in this thread more than I already have (and still am).

Song order for the album will be:

Again

Over The Moon

Depending On Your Misery

Damaged Goods

I Wanna Turn You On

Cash 4 Gold

Someday Soon

Knock Me Down

There Has To Be Another Way

Thanks, everyone, for the kind words, etc. Also feel free to throw in constructive criticism whenever you have it--creating this album's been a real learning experience and we're always looking to improve . . .

Gear-related talk: I wanna buy a looper. Any recomendations?

I used a loooper.

Guys, I ended up picking up a 2012 Fender Mexy Strat to give my son for Christmas. I know its not the same as a floyd rose but felt that $200 was too good to pass up for the excellent condition. At minimum, he'll have a decent instrument to add to his stable. Anyways, without adding a hotrail pickup, is there a pedal that I could get him that would help get some of the 80s/90s rock sound when he needs it? I know it will never sound like a Gibson but was hoping there is something that could get him close when the need arises. They don't do many covers so mimicking the sound of a Gibson is not required.

Without humbuckers, you'd probably need a decent EQ or a tone-shaping pedal. THIS thread has a few suggestions. If you find something that does the job and your son's happy with, please report back here. Actually, report back here regardless--I'd like to learn your findings.
