***OFFICIAL*** Guitar Guys Thread -- all axes, all the time (1 Viewer)

That's super cool.  And you even had all the sound effects!  These videos are putting me in such a good mood - just what the doctor ordered as we're all cooped up!  Also, I'm pretty sure I got a contact high watching that video.
We sampled the sheep sheep sounds from the album. All the other stuff- pigs, dogs, “the lord is my Shepard” part, all was done in our basement studio. The whole album is on YouTube, but it was when you could only post 10 min vids so its all broken up.

I think there was a good handful of people on acid for that show. Exhibit A, front left, floppy hair guy who never stops jumping.

Fun to relive what I refer to as “back when I was cool.” Definitely a nice distraction right now, thanks for posting. Gets me out of the PSF and out of all the corona threads. Thank god for free agency; please don’t postpone the draft.

I was posting early this AM because I kept getting kicked off the Michigan unemployment website. Finally got through and was able to file. Only took 2 days of trying, and waking up at 4:00 and being really persistent.

Clearing out a corner in my basement today for my amp and guitar arriving this week.

Buddy of mine gave me a challenge—I have to learn Slash’s solo from Nightrain note for note. It’s an amazing solo. The soloing in the outro is also outstanding. It has all those signature Slash runs that have always been amazing to my ears but I’ve never figured out how to play them myself. Will be a fun challenge but I imagine hard as hell. Tips welcomed....

My friend asked me to counter with a solo challenge. I really like Slash’s solo from You Could Be Mine. But probably should give him something else; thinking something from Journey or Dire Straits.

And you should post some video of you playing your new rig when you get it!

Google chrome can play 1/2 speed, utilize that. Excellent tool for learning.

I this was around when I was 16 I’d be an amazing guitar player. I can hold my own on guitar, but I was a lot more in demand as a bass player, back when I was cool...I think I could tackle this if I still had an electric, those techniques are reasonable, especially when laid out step by step.
Also had a short stint as a drummer in a creedence cover band when some friends found themselves in a pinch.
The last electric I played/used a lot was a friends backup that he built- he bought a ruined strat, took the body and carved room for the pickups/electronics he wanted, put on a new neck, it was a solid guitar but it flipped people out because it looked like a strat but sounded completely different. He worked at Elderly instruments here in Lansing.

That's pretty darn cool.  If you go back through this thread, you'll see a couple of us engaged in a guitar-building process.  I did my own relic'd Partscaster build.  It looks cool and sounds awesome.  But using old tuners makes keeping it in tune a challenge over the course of a gig.

And can we talk about Slash some more please?  I mean, the guy was 20, 21 years old when they recorded Appetite.  He was doing things that were so completely different from what everyone else was doing at the time.  It was dead middle of the 80s, the height of tapping and shredding, and here walks in this guy out of nowhere with such artistry, such a distinctive style and feel of playing, such distinctive tone and note choices, he was unlike anything the world had seen.  Yes of course he learned a lot and stole cues from Jimmy Page, from Joe Perry, etc.  But he was also 100% unique in what he did.  I remember being blown away by it then, but in retrospect, being more knowledgeable and well versed in music today than I was than, it's even more apparent to me how special this guy was.  Good gravy.  You sit through. appetite and listen to the tones and the solos and the riffs and it's just, I don't know where the note choices come from, but they're wonderful (hint: looking back, I know the note choices actually come from a bunch of different takes on minor scales, but still, even knowing that, it's just really hard to recreate well).

Here's some sick playing.  The outro solo in particular is awesome.

Divided sky

since there was a phish post bump, I figured I’d throw another link up. Full disclosure, there are some bass edits in this one, went back and threw a track over a part in the middle.

@Otis I didn’t know how young slash was then. Steve Vai was 20 when he played with Zappa- in 1980.

I saw Derek trucks back in 1998. I had tickets to see Dylan, and Phil Lesh and friends were the openers. I was more there to see Phil, and thought “this might be the only chance I get to see bob” (I saw him again in like 2013). Anyway, Warren Haynes was playing and apparently the other guy playing at the time (Steve kimock I think) got into a disagreement and kimock left. This was 2 days before the show. In walks a 19 yr old Derek trucks who proceeded to play circles around warren. There were periods where Haynes just stopped playing because Phil and trucks were just in a zone. One of my favorite shows, simply because it was so spontaneous.

BB King telling Derek Trucks it's about as good as he's ever heard it

You can't get any higher praise.

Totally agree.   I was the typical metal head when I heard Appetite and can’t say that I loved it at first listen.  It was just different.  After a couple of listens, I fell in love and have not stopped listening.  It’s a top 10 album of all time to me.   Slash’s guitar work is the biggest reason that Appetite is incredible.  He has the ability to play the perfect solo in every song.   Somehow he was born a guitar genius.

Just learn every riff and every solo on that album.   I learned a few solos and should have learned more.

Delivered today. Bought last week. Used. Didn’t disinfect.
Local?  Ebay?  Reverb?  Other?

Beautiful guitar.  I have almost the exact same guitar--PRS single cut with artist top and bird inlays.  Quilted top and almost a royal blue.

Reverb. So many great guitars there.  Knew I wanted a McCarty 594 Model based on all I read:

- I knew I liked shorter scale guitars

- Vintage neck shape, which is the kind of guitar I grew up on (a Gibson Epiphone SG) and just the feel I’m used to

- stoptail (I’ve always leaned my picking hand on the bridge while I play, and with a trem it gets all pitchy)

After just an hour of playing I can say the guitar is a more perfect “fit” for me than I had even hoped.  Just feels like being with an old friend when I play it. And it’s kind of corny, and this didn’t dawn on me until after my bid was accepted, but my old SG that I learned to play on was black with chrome hardware, and at one point in college I stripped the paint and refinished it in a blue color with gold hardware—this guitar is blue with a black back and neck, and it has a mix of chrome and zinc (gold ish) hardware. Thought that was kind of cool, a little fate.

But way better than an old friend, like a superhero upgraded version. The pickups and combination of tones I can get just mixing them in regular and split coil mode, just wow.  I’ve found my perfect setup.

PRS makes so many gorgeous guitars, it’s hard to choose. I basically just lowball bid on a bunch of different ones on Reverb, negotiated pretty hard with this guy and got the guitar for $500 less than his already low asking price. It wasn’t the fanciest (some of those Artist series and wood library guitars are just stunning), but it’s still the nicest electric guitar I’ve ever owned.  Stoked to hopefully be back into playing like I did many moons ago.

I should. Great idea. I tried in high school and just gave up, it was too hard to play or get tone like Slash. But I’m learning Nightrain now after a friend challenged me. It isn’t that bad really. The outro solo is tougher, but I’ll get there. YouTube makes it so much easier — as a kid I would sit there with often inaccurate tab books trying to learn and it was just impossible. It’s so much easier now.

I can’t tell you enough how much google chromes ability to play 1/2 speed helped me learn a lot of really difficult songs really quickly. Developing muscle memory and using proper technique instead of hurriedly rushing thru.

So awesome when you meet “The One.”

I use the Tab Pro app in a similar manner.  I can slow tabs/songs down by 50% and as I learn the songs, I up the speed a bit until I’m at 100 %.

VR amp headphones.  I'm trying to get away from complicated gadgets, but I thought this was interesting.
Whoa. Watched the whole video from start to finish. Amazing technology.
Could be a combination of popularity and their production being slowed down by the COVID, but the Boss Waza Air Headphones are still hard to find.  Musicians Friend currently showing a ship date of 5-11-2020.  That date changes every week.

I'd rank my myself as a pretty good rhythm player, but never had the patience to practice speed, and scales. So my lead, riff, and fill skilz are less than zero. Besides I hardly play with anyone else so just strumming, and muting chords has served me well over the years.

Well I've decided to put my "work from home" time to good use. Three or fours years ago on a drunken saturday night when all the best online purchasing decisions are made.  I bought the Charlie Wallace "Master the Fretboard" 10 week course.

On Monday my journey began. Week one seems to be learning the C G D pentatonic patterns of the "CAGED systems. I've seen and read about this system many times over the years, but it always looked complicated to me. So wish me well as use several of my 10/15 minute brakes on my "Series 10" by Bentley Tele instead of hanging at the coffee pot talking about the "Tiger King" with people I don't even really like.

Can’t wait to hear how this goes.  My lead work is ok at best and could use improvement.  Not sure I could devote enough time towards my playing to focus on a program but if you have success, I may have to find that time.

Also want to hear about the above, keep us posted.  Looking for a new system to get out of the very basic lead rut I have been in my whole life.  There's so much I need to learn, and I know I can at some point.

BTW, took video of myself playing the Nightrain solos last night, and while not perfect, it's serviceable.  I'm practically there.  Soon I'll be on to the outro...

My fingers are struggling.  Blisters and the like.  With no callouses, and especially given the crazy slash bends that beat up on your fingers, it's been tough.  So the past couple days I haven't been able to practice more than a few minutes.  I figure it'll pass in another week.  ouchie.

I'm buying an acoustic guitar to use this quarantine time for something useful. Never really played. Do I need an acoustic-electric guitar, or just acoustic?

What do you think of this guy?
