***OFFICIAL*** Guitar Guys Thread -- all axes, all the time (1 Viewer)

Can't wait to see it.
The charitable event where our video was broadcast happened yesterday, so we are now free to share the tunes ourselves. This is not my regular band - it’s a side project of lawyers that play for a charity called Law Rocks. All 80s tunes for the set, and I decided to play synth in a couple of them.  Other than me sporting my “quarantine 15”, the video turned out pretty good for a single take live recording shot with four iPhones. As with most music videos, they sound better through computer or Bluetooth speakers or headphones, but you can get the gist from the external speakers on your phone. Hope you guys like them!

need a ruthless personal injury guy?  see the big cat drums

in some hot water, need a criminal defense?  da bass player got ya covered

negotiating a rough divorce? that silvered-haired devil is your guy

need to worm your way through an IP dispute? the nerd on lead, of course

looking for some dodgy off-shore asset protection? the dark shades white tie front man, obviously

I loved them all BB! I think you stole the show. Vocals are outstanding. Not sure I would have liked them so much otherwise. Great job and looks like too much fun.

Thanks!  As for the band, none of us are pro musicians. Though the drummer is in multiple bands and could be pro if he wanted to. He’s a human metronome - incredibly talented. Anyway, I really appreciate you giving them a watch! And yes, it was indeed a blast!

Great song choices. You guys sounded tight. The lead singer especially has a great voice. I'm seriously impressed.

Why the hell not?  Life is short. Buy more gear.
:lmao:  I appreciate the validation. That money would be far better spent on an amp, where the Fender Mustang GTX 100 is the clubhouse leader. Of course, the best use for the money would be lessons.

Thank you for the kind feedback! Doing a live recording is tricky and we’re happy with how the mix turned out.

My relationship with amps has definitely changed over the years. I used to serially marry and divorce tube amp after tube amp after tube amp. Fender, Orange, Marshall, Blackstar, etc.  These days, I (and the other guys in my main band) have completely switched over to modeling solutions and no longer use amps. At practice and at shows, we plug direct to the PA.  For home practice, I use a simple powered PA speaker.

HNGD to me! No, I didn't buy the Rhoads, but I got the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster. Very different from my Slick Tele (also made in China) and PRS SE Standard 245 (Indonesia). Surf music on deck!

Metallica and Megadeth have determined my 14 year old son needs a 24 fret electric. His birthday is coming up so Dad is going to treat him to a new axe. Any suggestions in the $300-400 range? I looked into the Schecter C-6 last night which seems to have good reviews. I'll dive into the Ibanez options as well, but was hoping to get other suggestions.

How'd that Fender work out? I'm in a similar position with my kid but the smaller versions of the same guitars (yamaha FS-800, fender CC-60s). She wants the Fender because it comes in black  .
Worked out fine.  She still messes around with it on occasion, but has moved on to electric.  We bought her that acoustic for her birthday, and she jumped right in.  We then bought her an electric Fender Jazzmaster and amp for Xmas of 2020.  Just a few weeks ago she treated herself to a 3rd guitar...not sure what it is...another Jazzmaster made in Mexico or something.  It seems to be another tier up in the food chain and she was excited about it.  Anyway, she has taken lessons for nearly 2 years now.  She played in the high school jazz band, and she joined the Songwriter's Club.  She spends a lot of her spare time playing her guitars, but more the electric's now.  The acoustic is still in great shape at 2 years old and is what fueled her interest at the start, so I guess it worked out well.

I was hoping a more experienced guitar nerd would address this. My daughter wanted a strat at 14. She'd played piano and keys since early childhood lessons. I didn't think spending 7-800 on a strat was a good idea, so I bought a $99 Chinese clone, Fender tuners, bridge and pups. She was disappointed despite me explaining she could have the real deal if she took it seriously. Meh, I should have just bought the Fender. The knockoff is mine now. If your boy asked for a Schecter, get him one. If he didn't specify I still defer to others around here.

Good to see you, CC. I bought him a used MiM Strat a couple years ago that he loves. NGL, I love the neck on that thing too. It wasn't until he started learning the metal solos that he asked for another electric. He mentioned wanting a 24 fret Ibanez which sent me down the road of seeing what's out there in the $300-400 range. When I first mentioned the Schecter C6 he wasn't thrilled, likely because he wasn't familiar with the brand. Then I showed him some pictures and he got excited. Of course, it's all for not if there are better options I could sell him on.

ETA - Eventually I'll take him down to Guitar Center and let him see what he likes but wouldn't mind narrowing it down a bit.

Apologies - metal guitars are not in my wheelhouse and what little knowledge I might possibly have will be 30 years old.

@jdoggydogg is likely the right guy for this question.

I'm no expert. But if you're on a strict budget, I'd look at a used instrument on Craigslist. You'll probably get more for your dollar that way. As for brands, all the manufacturers make an affordable version of their pro guitars. The factory means everything, so it's hard to know the best value unless you try a lot of them out first.

Well, it’s been a long time since I could say this, but HNGD to me!  I don’t have it in my hands yet, but just made the purchase. It’s a used Tom Anderson Crowdster Plus 2.  I regularly gig with a couple Crowdster Plus models which has a single electric pickup at the bridge. I’ll sell one of those to help pay for the Plus 2 which also includes a neck pick-up.

This is a pretty niche guitar admittedly, but it’s perfect for me because I switch back and forth between acoustic and electric (rhythm) constantly during a show and this saves me from having to switch guitars.  It is an acoustic guitar with a piezo pickup that also includes electric pickups designed specifically to work with acoustic strings.  Although this video doesn’t do the incredible tone justice, it gives you a sense of the guitar’s versatility.  Also, you can actually activate the acoustic and electric pickups simultaneously to give you a layered sound. I never use that function because I’m playing an overdriven rock patch on the electric tunes, but the dual electric/acoustic signal is often used with clean/wet tones in pop or Christian music settings.

Anyway, I know I posted about the Crowdster years ago, but thought some of the newer readers might be interested to learn about this unique and somewhat weird creation from Tom Anderson.  By the way, Fender has a similar guitar, the Acoustasonic, which is better for non-amplified applications, but for my ears pales in comparison in a live setting, particularly for the electric tones.  I also think it’s ugly as heck.

That thing is gorgeous. I loved the acoustic and acoustic+electric sections of the video. I almost bought the Fender when I first heard about it. Seemed so cool. But this Anderson is another level for sure.

HNAGD!

a is for awesome.

Here I am once again bumping the guitar thread looking for some advice from the experienced. I am looking at a few accessories as Christmas gifts for my guitar playing college kid. She has expressed an interest in tinkering around with recording stuff. I am looking at this PreSonus AudioBox interface. To my inexperienced eye, it looks like good value and seems to have decent reviews. Any thoughts about this or other recommendations would be welcomed.

Secondly, being in the dorm, she is pretty limited on her use of the amp. She has some old crappy headphones, so usually just ends up playing without the amp. So, I was looking at this Fender Mustang Micro headphone amp. In addition to being able to play quietly, I figure something like this has some added portability. Either way, she will need some new headphones. If I get this amp, I could probably spring for some modestly priced headphones...or would it be better to invest in some higher quality headphones and just let her keep using her current amp (Fender Champion 20). Are there any such headphone amps that communicate through Bluetooth to earbuds? She really prefers ear buds to over the ear headphones.

I bought the Mustang GTX100 in June, so now I have 34 amps, 39 cabinets and almost five dozen classic pedals. I will be nerding out on this thing for as long as Fender supports it. Lol.

On Cyber Monday I pulled the trigger on a Yamaha Pacifica 612 that was irrationally priced on Reverb. A lot of folks build their own Partscasters, but I discovered that Yamaha is selling them to people with warranties and everything :headbang:

Umm, wow. Just wow. Do you have a storage unit for all your gear?

I use that same PreSonus for home recording and it works just fine.

Also, I wouldn't think she'd need an amp in a dorm when she can just play through her AudioBox/computer/headphones setup. That's what I use to practice at home; I leave my amp at the rehearsal space.

eta: I do use over the ear headphones with his setup, so that might be a dealbreaker...

I use a Scarlett Focusrite Solo for recording, and it works well. I'm not sure how it compares to the PreSonus,

Personally, if I was the gift receiver. I think I'd want the extra money to be spent on better over the head earphones.
But I'm not a college aged girl worried about messing up my hair.

I use a Scarlett interface ($150) along with the PreSonus Studio One Artist DAW ($100 - $150 depending if there's a deal) and it sounds great.

Multi-effects built into the amp.

In case it wasn't clear to everyone, the Mustang is a $500 modeler

Oh geez, I completely misread the post. I’d love to claim my response was a witty quip, but no. Anyway, big fan of today’s modeling solutions. The technology has come so far. Great tone is finally within reach of players on a budget. I no longer play live with an amp and have gotten rid of most of the amps in my collection.

At long last, after nearly 40 years playing music, I have finally purchased the piece of gear I have been waiting all my life to purchase.

THERE IS NO STOPPING ME NOW!!!
New used stolen? Give us the scoop!

Brand new! To be clear, it’s a midi controller in a keytar body, rather than an actual legit keytar. When I do perform synth parts, I use midi controllers that trigger patches through Logic Pro (on my Mac) and a Roland subscription that lets me access all the vintage synths from yesteryear. I’m already working on Loverboy’s Working for the Weekend. I am going to slay all the womenfolk with my KEYTAR!!!

I've never been able to really figure out MIDI.

I've never been able to really figure out MIDI.

“Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) is a standard to transmit and store music, originally designed for digital music synthesizers. MIDI does not transmit recorded sounds. Instead, it includes musical notes, timings and pitch information, which the receiving device uses to play music from its own sound library.”

I have a couple midi controllers that look like keyboards. They don’t actually make any sound though. Instead, they trigger sounds that I have stored on my computer. So I can play a piano piece using my midi controller, but the keys are just triggering the piano patch I have on my MacBook.

Not too much traffic on this thread these days, but for my fellow FBG musician hobbyists, I thought I’d share a couple tracks that might give you a laugh. The cover band I play with tries to weave in some fun crowd favorites for later in the set when the dance floor is hopping and the crowd is sufficiently lubricated (we do a rock version of Outkast's Hey Ya and a pop punk version of Melt With You that are very successful live). Because these tunes are often out of left field, I sometimes mock up the track and then record all vocals to better present the idea. Sometimes I use instrumental tracks I find on line and sometimes I work with my guitar player to lay down the instrumental tracks. Fingers crossed but I think both of these ideas may make the set for our next show. Tongue is planted firmly in cheek with these - one is a cross-generational mash-up and the other is a pop punk boy band interpretation - enjoy!

Those are awesome, BB.

Update: I am still taking lessons from Fender, but I am also buying more gear, lol. Got an Epiphone Firebird last week. The neck pickup is sweet and versatile in ways I'm not yet good enough to explore. The bridge pickup is a Tasmanian devil on bath salts. Gonna look at lowering that one this weekend.

MOER GEER!!! I'm definitely a fan of building a collection.

I've never played a Firebird before, but love the description of your bridge pickup!

I have been able to dial the bath salts out the bridge pickup and leave Taz unharmed. Regrettably, Guitar Center is hurting and running unadvertised sales. Got the last Epiphone Sheraton Pro II in Central Texas after they discounted a guitar that never goes on sale from $749 to $469. My collection has a queen.

Ebony with gold hardware. I know the 'gold' will look like crap in two years, don't care. The guitar was apparently set up in a funhouse, or a ship in a heavy sea. Tailpiece and bridge and pickups tilted this way and that. Took the high side down in each case and it's great now, just needs a little tweaking on the intonation.

Okay, for the first time in my life, my wife bought me a piece of gear. and it’s a stunner. She’s a gorgeous Gretsch Billy Duffy Signature White Falcon. I am so blown away. Even better, the guitar was paired with a video my buddy procured for the occasion. Links below!

WHITE FALCON

Happy Birthday Video (sound up!)

Oh Dear word!

:jawdrop:

That is beautiful! I think Jim Heath (The Reverend Horton Heat) plays a Gretsch, as have other glam/metal guys of yore. Billy Duffy of The Cult, huh? Cool.
