Kendrick lands on the disabled list

Angels second baseman hit by pitch, breaks bone in finger

By Lyle Spencer / MLB.com

OAKLAND -- Second baseman Howie Kendrick, among the Angels' top hitters this season, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken bone in his finger.

Kendrick suffered a non-displaced fracture at the base of the third metacarpal at the bottom of his left middle finger after he was hit by a pitch thrown by Oakland's Chad Gaudin on Tuesday night at McAfee Coliseum.

He will be placed in a soft support, with no cast necessary, the Angels said. But they offered no timetable for his return.

Kendrick, batting .327, was examined and given an MRI and CAT scan along with right fielder Vladimir Guerrero on Wednesday at the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles. Guerrero's MRI and CAT scan confirmed the earlier diagnosis of a contusion of his right hand. He is day-to-day.

Kendrick, 23, reported discomfort and swelling in the hand after the game on Tuesday night and was treated with ice. On Wednesday morning, the hand hadn't improved, and he flew to Los Angeles to be evaluated. Kendrick batted .285 as a rookie last season in 72 games.

The Angels will make a roster move Thursday or Friday. They open a seven-game homestand against Seattle on Friday night.

Among the candidates to be recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake are first baseman/DH Kendry Morales and young third baseman Brandon Wood, generally considered the organization's premier position prospect.

Wood, who played alongside Kendrick coming up through the Minor Leagues, had three hits and three RBIs on Wednesday against Tucson, raising his average to .293. Wood has three homers and 11 RBIs.

Do the halos bring up Wood, who is a converted SS in his first year playing third, or the 1B/DH? I think this decision will be as much based on how soon Figgins can come back from his injury.

Morales called up today. See Brandon Wood thread for link. Article also states that Figgins could be back by next weekend.

Fantastic game by Escobar today............103 PC, 9 INN, 7 HA, 9 K, W, CG, SO

This is why I take this guy every year, he can be great when he is healthy.....is it possible for him to stay of the DL the rest of the year ???

Figgins goes 6 for 6 with a game winning triple.

45-26 Most wins in the majors.

Juan Rivera should be taking BP soon.

I'm liking the Angels chances this year.
