What is your all's background prior to getting into the IT line of work?  Comp Science degrees?  Technical school certifications?  Being good at google?  Knew somebody?

I've always thought it'd be a good trade to get into but never really knew the inroads.

Can this be the "***OFFICIAL IT Guys Thread***"??? Do we have enough FBG IT folks to justify one?  I'm currently an IT of one at my place of employment, but looking to move on in the near future to work for an MSP or some larger company with interesting, complex infrastructures.

Obligatory ECPI warning: I went there, and luckily it didn't hurt me too much. The 'degree' helped me land a good job in another field, and eventually I did get an IT job. I definitely do not recommend it for people really wanting to learn, but it might be OK if you're already in the field, need schooling for promotions, etc., and your employer is helping foot the bill. Other than that, their programs are giant, expensive, basic crash courses in everything. Job placement is a farce. It was a long time ago though. It might have changed since or be different at different locations, but I can't imagine it really is.

EE degree.

There is a more boring topic than the lawyer guys.  Who knew?
Yeah, when I saw this thread I thought "you've got to be fricken kidding me".   I got into IT in 1976 and have been a CIO for almost 20 years.  I don't think I've ever even talked about what I do with friends or family.  It would bore them to tears.

I tell folks I sell insurance.  They never have a follow up question.

Systems Analysis degree.

First job out of college was mostly an Oracle Forms developer --> added PowerBuilder & Ingres Win 4GL ---> SQL and stored procedure development.

Did software development for about 15 years in the areas listed above and gradually morphed into full time Project Management (PMI certified).

Miami, OH?

"IT" ended up being the Segway.  Still waiting for the full retooling of our infrastructure to accomodate them.  Assuming this thread has updates on that?
