Didn't listen to the Ticket today, but saw a little news blurb about a Dallas musician being shot to death. I did a little Google search and it turns out it was Danny's roommate and Sorta member, Carter Albrecht. Did they mention this at all today?

Link to story.
I didn't listen much today, but Danny didn't seem to be there when I did.
At 5:10 I tuned in and Rhyner made mention that "we know the events of the day, but do not feel right discussing them out here at SMU. We will discuss them tommorow."I was wondering what it was, and now that makes sense. They went right into Entertainment News For You, but no Danny was heard from.

Sad day.
That sucks.
Can't blame the dude. Someone steps to your house at 4:10 and you're packing what are you gonna do? Now with the castle law in effect he won't do any time at all.

It will be interesting to see if more details come out regarding exactly why he was pounding on the door at that hour.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say drugs were involved.

I'm reading domestic disturbances in all the online papers right now, but I agree, if someone is banging and kicking your door at that hour, you protect your house.

Why would he be banging on his neighbor's door because of a domestic disturbance, though? Unless he stabbed him and he needed someone to call 911, I'm not sure why he would be banging on his neighbor's door.

Totally off the current topic, but I have spent the last 30 mins on the Ticket website, and did someone give Greggo some more Vigorfit, because that Husky Hugger is freakin' skinny!!

More info on Carter Albrecht:

Carter Albrecht, musician with Sorta, New Bohemians, dies in shooting

12:28 AM CDT on Tuesday, September 4, 2007

By TANYA EISERER / The Dallas Morning News

teiserer@dallasnews.com

The local music community was left stunned Monday by the fatal shooting of a well-known musician who authorities say beat up his girlfriend and then tried to kick in a neighbor's door in an apparent drunken rage.

Jeffrey Carter Albrecht, 34, died early Monday after being shot in the head by the neighbor, who thought he was a burglar. Police said the girlfriend had bruises on her face but did not suffer serious injuries. The couple did not have a history of domestic violence, police said.

Mr. Albrecht, who went by his middle name, was a guitarist and keyboardist best known for his work with the Dallas rock band Sorta as well as with Edie Brickell & New Bohemians.

"It's a sad day for Dallas music," local concert promoter Mike Snider said. "He was a musical genius, a real prodigy — everything came to him naturally. He was an incredible instrumentalist — when he played, you could really see the joy he got out of playing."

According to police, Mr. Albrecht and his girlfriend had been partying at a Greenville Avenue bar. He had gotten drunk, and she had driven them to her home in the 9000 block of Santa Clara Drive, just east of White Rock Lake, police said.

The girlfriend told police that Mr. Albrecht slammed a drinking glass on a table, cutting his hand. He then struck the girlfriend in the face several times with his fist, knocking her to the floor at about 4 a.m. Monday, the report said.

He hit her in the back while she was on the floor, the report said. She broke away from Mr. Albrecht and ran outside. He followed her, according to the report. She then went around to the back yard and through the back door, locking Mr. Albrecht out, the report said.

Mr. Albrecht "attempted a few times to gain access to the … residence by knocking and banging on the door," but could not get in, the report said. Police believe Mr. Albrecht then went to the back of nearby neighbor's home.

The neighbor told police "he was awakened when he heard his wife screaming that someone was breaking into the house." The man was kicking and banging at the door, and the homeowner yelled at him to stop.

When the man, identified as Mr. Albrecht, didn't stop, the homeowner who was armed with a handgun "shot one time at the top of the door," the report said.

"He was trying to shoot over his head to scare him away," but Mr. Albrecht "is rather tall," said Sgt. Larry Lewis, a homicide supervisor, estimating the musician's height to be 6-foot-5.

Mr. Albrecht was shot once time in the head and died at the scene.

Police did not release the name of the homeowner who shot Mr. Albrecht. Investigators said the case will be referred to the grand jury to determine whether any charges will be filed.

A new law, nicknamed the "Castle doctrine," eliminates the requirement that someone has to retreat before using deadly force to defend themselves. The law already allows a person to use deadly force to prevent someone from committing a break-in at night.

Mr. Albrecht's parents declined to comment on the events surrounding his death but did say that they had spoken to his girlfriend.

"She's a dear person," the musician's mother, Judith Albrecht, said. "We've hugged and cried. I know they cared for each other a lot."

Mrs. Albrecht and her husband, Kenneth, who live in Plano, said their son's friends had been in and out of their house all day, paying their respects. An informal gathering of local musicians and friends was scheduled for Monday night at The Barley House in Dallas.

Mr. and Mrs. Albrecht said they knew from an early age that their son had the makings of a gifted musician. Mrs. Albrecht began teaching him piano as a small child, and he later took lessons from a college professor while the family lived in Kansas.

"He had a wonderful ear," Mrs. Albrecht said. "It just came natural to him. He had a way of making what was on the page come to life."

Their son attended Southern Methodist University on a music scholarship. He received a degree in piano performance in 1995. Several years ago, Mr. Albrecht was named best songwriter and musician of the year by the Dallas Observer.

"He always wanted to have a band," his father said. "Music was how he was going to make his living."

His parents said his career was taking off, and he was nearly done with a solo album. He was also working on an album with Sorta.

"Anybody that's been in this city that's been a performing musician has been touched by him in some way or another," said Sorta singer Trey Johnson. "He was that respected."

You gotta just feel horrible for Danny. He looses his best friend, roommate, and the driving force behind Sorta. While each guy in the band is excellent in their own right, they were only going as far as Carter got them. This definitely shatters that Rock Star Dream for those guys. Life changing day for Danny. I just hope he doesn't decide to do something stupid like bailing on The Ticket.
Danny doesn't seem like the stablest of characters, either. I'll be thinking about him ...

Hearing the details of what went on, I can't help but think he was so ####ed up, he went to the wrong back door. It seems like the only logical explanation. culdy might be right about drugs, though, too.

That's what it sounds like. He was definitely not of sound mind at the time.

 I finally saw Sorta for the first time a few weeks ago. They had something. Wonder if they'll try to regroup.

From Danny's MySpace page:

there is no question; were he here right now, he would think this is totally ####### gay, and i would never hear the end of it.i found out this morning at 7:00 that my best friend was probably dead. i got the call from his girlfriend as she was being taken to the police station to be interviewed, as she saw the coroner’s van and a stretcher with a covered body being loaded into it as the cops drove her from the neighborhood. about an hour and a half later, she confirmed it. my brother, bandmate, roommate, and the closest friend i have ever known had been shot to death earlier at 4:07 a.m.we’ve all read the updated story in the dallas morning news, and it seems pretty accurate, according to the play-by-play of events she gave me throughout the night. what we don’t know is why he ended up at the next door neighbor’s back door, banging and kicking it at 4:06. nor do we know why carter acted out with his girlfriend in a manner that i have never seen in my near-ten years of friendship with him.this was not the carter albrecht i knew. the police report failed to mention that for the previous week, he and his girlfriend were trying quit smoking with the prescription drug, “chantix”. they had both started the program at the same time, and had been on it for a week. monday was supposed to be their quit day. carter had not slept much the night before, and had consumed approximately five cocktails in a two hour period on sunday eve. this was not unusual, as carter had a very good tolerance for the drink. chantix does clearly state on the box that it’s drowsy effects could be intensified by alcohol. the two also complained of having crazy, insane, almost horrific dreams that week. they jokingly referred to them as “chantix dreams” when comparing them. i later learned through a close friend that he had firsthand knowledge of two separate couples who had tried to quit smoking using chantix, and in each case, one spouse had tried to kill the other with no previous domestic conflct. one was successful, and many refer to this drug as a psychotic.was it a combination of sleep deprivation, booze, and the stop-smoking pills that sent him off? it’s the only explanation i can even think of. what was described to me sounded like a walking black out. in my years of knowing him, and all the girls he dated, i have never once heard of him getting abusive or physical with them. it was not his character. especially with the woman that i know for a fact he loved dearly. unfortunately, the morning news story paints him as a batterer to the casual reader that did not know him. this, he was undeniably not.so why banging on the next door neighbor’s back door? who knows. same waking black out state? confusion thinking he was knocking on his girlfriend’s door? this we will never know. any other explanation just doesn’t add up.what i can tell you about carter is that he was the best musician i have ever played with. it may sound trite, but it was an honor to play music with him, create and record with him, laugh and joke with him, for the better part of the last ten years. he was a unique musician. i don’t think enough people got to hear him. not only was he the backbone of sorta, playing keys and innovative guitar, he was my favorite solo artist/bandleader i’ve seen closely. if you got him, you got him. he was one of a kind. a dylan. an elliott smith. he had “it”. that extra something that set him apart from basically everyone else. i often joked with him that no one would really appreciate him until he died. his soulful, yet punk voice…his genius lyrics that were probably above the heads of most. and his playing. wow. today, when dozens of musicians gathered at our house, trying to make sense of this mess, i said more than once that “the thing that’s so wasteful about him being gone, is that he was better than all of us.” if anyone was going to save music in the dallas scene, it was him.he had many opportunities to go to new york, LA, and could have played sideman to anyone. but he chose to stay in dallas, where his family lived, his friends played, and his loyalty was rooted. he was a character-driven slave to honesty. and i learned alot about being truthful and up-front from him. you could hear it in his voice, his words, in the general way he carried himself. he was the real deal. most of the rest of us were just poseurs next to him.he meant the world to me. i will never see him again on this earth, and i am heartbroken from it. i can’t think about tomorrow because he is supposed to be there. he is supposed to be playing his piano in the dining room, or watching the rangers while eating some crap from a greenville fast-food place. we are supposed to talk about the goofy stuff that happened on the hardline that day. we are supposed to talk about books (usually a one-sided conversation with me on the short side) and the mavs and girls and music.but my best friend isn’t here anymore. and i honestly don’t know what to do.i guess the only thing left to do, is let everyone in on something you may not have known. carter was a very intelligent guy. smart as hell. borderline genius. so my final dig on my buddy is this…the last movie he watched was “snakes on a plane”. well, to his credit, he didn’t watch all of it. love you, buddy.

I'd like to think that the boys in the Hardline and all of Danny's musician freinds will be keeping a watchful eye on him and help him through this time

bad radio today ran a liner that mentioned donovan and dan supporting bob, after the recording, dan (i think) said something to the effect of "are we going to have to change that now?...oh...i cant talk about that..., to which his partner replied "you've said to much. is this an indication that donovan may be leaving? is this why he is on "vacation"?

also, this morning during the e-brake spot, the musers mentioned they had 4 months left to gather e-brakes from barb smith, she was a jock in the past so i wonder if she may be leaving at the end of the year (shame).

sorry this is my first post but its the weekend so obviously i wont find anything else out.

i'm so happy today....i emailed the musers what turned out to be the e-brake nominee of joe trahan's quote about hansen wanting to give delkus a "facial"

no return email though

also, heard the america's got talent guy on the musers thursday talking about how great a musician carter was...seems that guy was dallas music.

I thought I heard Danny say that Carter was drinking and on some anti-smoking prescription that clearly says, "Do not mix with alcohol."Sad day all around.

Chantix. There have been numerous reports of dark side effects when mixed with alcohol. The guy that pulled the trigger sounds like a real idiot. I assume he will never forget what he did.

I have a question. The other morning Gordo was talking about outing line 4 guy and also said that he is an employee of some type. Might not be a ticket guy, possibly another station within the Cumulus family.

Anyone know the true identity??

I dunno, it seems like he knew Corby from somewhere and just has a normal 9-5 job. If you have listened for a long time you can hear background noise from his end that sounds like generic office noise. They like to make you think that none of them have any idea who it is, but that's not the case. He came on the rant a few times IIRC for one reason or another.

Randomness, my wife and I were out walking the squid and just happened upon Gordon his wife and older kid. Real random encounter and I didn't say anything. He said "hey" to the mrs. who spotted him first.

 Have you every heard McDowell so apologetic or helpless sounding? I can't remember exactly what he says but it's like "Joan, this is so unfortunate" and I'm rolling every time.

And did anyone hear the Musers when Gordo did the story about black tar heroin a couple of weeks ago? Gordo was reading the story and crystal clear with no background noise Jub-Jub said "what is black tar heroin?". The inflection was perfect as if he was answering a Jeopardy question. I knew at that moment Gordo would have a "Jeopardy" bit and use that drop as a Jub question to the "What is your favorite way to unwind" category. I am disappointed it's taken this long.

He has a 6 month old baby. We stopped by one of my wife's friend's house while we were out and he comes over there some (had no idea). The dude apparently sucks at cornhole and monkey balls.

It's crazy how private he is.
