Official Lacrosse Discussion Thread (1 Viewer)

My niece's boyfriend had a bit of a breakthrough year in the NLL with Panther City. 35 points in 9 games after joining them midseason.

I live in Peterborough, so everyone here is crazy about the sport but I don't particularly care about it.

Maryland isn't even playing their best and they are just too good.  Their defense is giving Cornell nothing to work with.  :(

I have interest in Lacrosse. It seems like a fun sport to play. The nearest I ever got to play would be messing around with field hockey in junior high gym class. Growing up in SoCal it just did not really exist except for Ivy League college. It is too late for me to play but I would like to get my sons exposed and they have expressed interest as well. I was hoping to get them into a camp this summer to try it out.... I am not sure if that will work out or not.

However, today I felt like watching sports and after watching some swim... some baseball... then searching, I saw there was a Johns Hopkins vs ND game mens quarterfinal so I turned it on.

I am totally ignorant so excuse the dumb questions but I have a few....

1. They showed the end of a womens game. I noticed that the girls only wore goggles and no helmets and the boys wear helmets. Why do the girls not wear helmets?
2. My youngest asked me "why do they call it lacross?" Uh... I dunno.... it sounds French.... maybe the French stole it from the American Indians and it means stick or something? (Yes, I said something along these lines to him :lmao:) what is the real answer?
3. I picked up on that the circle around the goal is a no go area for the offense.... but I see them pull up and pass a lot before a defender is really on them or a defender is close enough to knock them but they just shadow them... assuming you were big/strong enough, what stops you from barreling in right up the the limit of that line to try to score?

1. girls don’t have contact, guys game is just as violent as football.

2. indians didn’t have a name for it, the french named it because they thought the sticks looked like bishop’s crosses.

3. if you step over the line then it’s no goal, speed and agility >>> speed and strength because if you try and bully up to the line then the goalie is just gonna step out as the pass comes in and wipe you out.

my kids got into lacrosse around 9/10 to play when not in football to stay in football shape but the physicality of it made them love the sport. I played baseball my whole life but was so glad as a parent that my kids played lacrosse as it’s fast paced the entire time.

I’m lacrossed out this year; it was quite the emotional dump when my kids team went out in their college semi’s

@Chadstroma if your kid likes football it wouldn’t be a stretch to think he’d like lacrosse

Football is his favorite. Soccer is his second. I don't think it would be unfair to say that Lacrosse is kind of a mix between the two. Soccer season is pretty light (we don't do club, just school and the season was ridiculously short this year) and there is a break between swim seasons that I think it might work. I just looked up the local Lacrosse team and it looks like their games are April through May which is pretty close to being right in that break time for swim. It might be a good add. My wife would kill me if she thinks it is me doing it but if it is him driving it then it would work.

The other sport he has been asking about is baseball but there is just too much conflict with swim and I really don't want him to give that up as he is really doing so well plus it is the best conditioning he can get for the other sports. And then Baseball is so skill specific it would be hard for him to catch up while Lacrosse would be a natural fit for his well above average mix of height, size, strength, speed and athleticism that he has over kids his age.

Maybe next season.

Chad, I think game flow is most like basketball and hockey. Soccer for endurance. Summer and fall clubs might help get their feet wet to see if they like it.
Our high school season was March through early may (with playoffs).

Get a ball & stick and find a good wall.. 20-30 min throwing and catching (and cradling) with both hands.

Also, there are a lot of good programs in socal. Maybe a short term camp from a college (Whittier, ucla, etc), or strong hs program
chads not in so cal anymore, at least I don’t think. And ***LA… mods that is a shout out to the old poster but also f ucla the only team my kids team lost to during the regular season this year

I grew up in SoCal... we are in the burbs of Chicago now. Sadly.

I looked for Lacrosse camps for him. The city rec has one but it conflicts with a basketball camp he and his brother and sister are in which I am not going to give up for as it is a high quality camp that I am getting them in for free.

The local HS seems to have consolidated the team into a district one between the three HS's in the system. They have a camp and I could make it work BUT you have to bring your own equipment and I am not going to buy him all the gear for him to test it out to see if he likes it or not.

The local club team seemingly does not have any intro camps (or even any summer camps) which to me seems extremely short sighted and foolish for a sport like Lacrosse that is lesser in numbers, though growing. It seems to me that that would be a high priority of mine if I was running a Lacrosse club as a way to grow the club and sport.

My sons are signed up for football, basketball and soccer camps and they are in swim through to about when school starts (and football starts). My daughter is in basketball and volleyball camps and has a short summer basketball league she is in as well. I really need a local camp that doesn't conflict with their other stuff and does not require me to spend money on equipment. I am not seeing it.

👍

I was inches from going to usc. 30 yrs ago we did well vs both of them. At the time Whittier and UoA seems a step or two above the rest.

Well.... it would work still as basketball is his third favorite sport. Then swim. Then baseball though he has never played organized baseball.

Though he has natural ability, it is hard to get him to do any practice on his own for any of his current sports. It is the thing that I think will end up limiting him from success... he has somewhat of an attitude of he is so good so he doesn't need to work hard. Though he does generally work hard at practices.... he just doesn't work on his own skill development on his own very much.

my nephew started this year after watching my kid, you can get the stuff cheap on craigslist/offerup and the best part is the stuff doesn’t lose its value. my sister dropped $160 for pads/helmet and stick and they can all be resold for the same. My nephew actually liked it and is going to stick with it but just know that it does hold its value.

Wait... how can I get it for cheap if it holds it's value?

there’s a depreciation level, if you buy a new helmet you’re looking at $300 bucks but used 50-75 bucks and that’s about what you can resell it at. check out a site like sidelineswap.com

championship game time, @Jaysus I hope Duke loses
It was an entertaining game today. Duke made it interesting for a while with a 3rd quarter explosion. The only bad thing about Duke losing is that Notre Dame won. I am not a fan of either, but I dislike Notre Dame more than Duke.

Very proud of my old hs team:

“Let’s work backwards, starting with that result. Two weeks ago, St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) beat St. Paul’s (Md.) 16-12. That result pushed the Wildcats way up to No. 16 this week after St. Paul’s, which already had a tight win over Landon (Md.), knocked off previously unbeaten Bullis (Md.) to join the rankings at No. 17. St. Ignatius will face two top-20 teams this week with Lawrenceville (N.J.) and Chaminade (N.Y.).”

nice, also :pokey: my kids team played them back in like 2013 and obviously lost but damn what a view of the Pacific from the stands

ah yes.... senior year: i was already accepted into my desired schools. several friends and i would cut and hibachi down at Ocean beach :suds:

Edit: also, i believe about 10-15 years ago they finished the season at 3rd or 4th in the nation. unheard of for a west coast team

I noticed John's Hopkins didn't make the tournament. I guess they had a down year.

JaxBill, it's been a minute. I've thought about you, buddy. I hope things are going well for you. Peace.

eta* sorry, but I have nothing lax-related to talk about. Just saw a poster's name and it immediately brought up memories of talking with him when his family member was suffering from cancer.
