Which races constitute the 50cc Retro races? I thought it was the first 2 of each row. I starred all those expecting to unlock the cheep charger, but no go. Do I need to star all the 50cc races to get it?
Bottom row is retro. They all have initials in front of their names.SNES - Super NintendoN64 - Nintendo 64GCN - Game Cube NintendoGBA - Game Boy AdvanceDS - Game Boy DS

So far, nobody in the thread has mentioned the phenomenon that happens when you're following a car or cars and you sort of get caught up in their jetstream - little blue wind lines appear and if you maintain your position behind them they will grow in number and intensity until you get a power boost that seems even longer and faster than the normal boosts (I could be wrong about that, but it does seem that way).

What is this called and is anyone using it strategically?

TIA. I'll hang up and listen...

I have heard of that. I don't know exactly what it's called but I think it's what you said. If you are behind someone long enough, you get a little boost.

Seriously, none of you have drafted a kart in front of you and got a speed boost? I have not drafted one kart and jump behind another kart looking to get a draft boost x 2 though... that may be something to try. Next time you guys race, start a cup, and do not get the fast start... just jump behind one of the other karts and follow him.

Also, too, I think A LOT of people don't take advantage of the speed boost while you are jumping things. While in the air, shake the controller and your character will do a little motion in the air and you'll hear a noise. When you hit the ground, you'll get a nice speed boost.

Its called drafting and they do it in NASCAR all the time. Pretty cool addition to the game.

I thought the drafting technique was Mario Kart: 101. I want to Kart it up now but have to go to work. Argh!!

I played online for a bit a few nights ago. I got taken to the woodshed time and again by Mic. I told my wife "Hey, I know that guy" and she called
:P whats your Kart name? you must have caught me when i was on a roll, because i usually dont do so well with the online races, i spend most of my time working to improve my Time Trials (or trying to beat you guys who top my times...Mr Shoo! :hophead: )

I love the mach bike with Peach.

The tight handling and great drifting allows me to charge up my mini-boost while riding almost straight.

I thought FunkyKong would be good but I can't get used to how the heavy bikes handle.

What are you guys' go-to driver/bike combo?

I was checking out your times and was befuddled at some of them. Than I just kept trying to unlock the expert ghosts to get the last Mii clothes or something. I plan on getting more of your times just so you know.

I don't like the heavy guys either... yet. I have to race with them a little bit more but what I have learned in this Mario Kart is that each racer is pretty much equal... small, medium, large. Where the separation takes place is how you use them and how well you drive with them. You can win most races with a small racer if you make all of the right turns and boosts the right way and stay on the inside like the small racers are geared for. The big racers gain ground on the straight awaya but if you don't control them right you are behind the 8-ball... same with the small ones. You cannot race the same way with a small racer that you do with a big racer. I tend to race with Daisy on the Dolphin Dasher or whatever the bottom bike is.

Thanks for that. I starred the top row except for the special cup. The special cup puzzled me, because I finished first in every race and there was only one race where my margin of victory was less than 5 seconds. On the rainbow road, I won by 15 seconds, and yet I was given a rank of A instead of star. Does anyone know why that is? I thought my times were pretty decent in all those races, but maybe I was slow in one of them. Also, how do you check times of friends? Another also, has anyone added my code, I see no friends when I get online. Here's my user ID again: 5155-3899-8190 Michael

I always figured the star rating had to do something with how many boosts you had, weapons you used, how much time overall you spent in first place and stuff like that. Not a simple cut and dry win the races and get the star rating.

I read somewhere that you had to finish first in all the races and have good times (no definition of a good time). That's why I was shocked because I really thought I ran 4 clean races. I spent most of my time in first and didn't use many weapons because I was holding shells and bananas behind me defensively. I'll try throwing more stuff around.

Finishing first is not a requirement. I ended one cup with 54 points and earned a 1-star rating. I have a couple of 3-star ratings but I am not going to go back and 3-star every cup. Turning boosts and more advanced driving techniques do the trick in my mind.

Just got all the retro cups, 2 starred 2 of them but I don't have any three stars thus far. Will try more tricks.

I've noticed that in online races, I can knock someone off the course and just as fast as they drop off, they pop back up slightly ahead of me!

Anyone know how to do this???
If you hit the #2 button right as you hit the ground after you reset, you will get a boost. Maybe that's the reason?
It's not that. Literally, as I knock them off the track, they pop back up .... less than a half second and they're driving normal speed just a little in front of me.

As I waited to join a race last night, I saw someone do this. I have no idea how, but they did.

This is a HUGE advantage and would make smaller karts/bikes more appealing to me, if we could figure it out.

BTW: I updated the front page with 3 more friend codes (Sand, Corporation and uconnalum)

I was using Sam (my son's license) becuase we've used it to unlock all the characters/karts. I'm working on building up my license (Brian) and will use that online from now on.

I've done well with Rosalina and the heavy bike but I like Donkey Kong and the heavy kart the best (haven't unlocked Funky Kong yet). I like the control of the heavy kart and knocking other players around. Also, I like it when Donkey Kong yells.....SHAMPOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Not sure I have ever seen another game cheat more than this one on 150cc. I'm trying to Star out and they are making it impossible. :tinfoilhat:

Ironically, I felt the same way when attempting them the first times... before even passing them. When I finally starred them, it took one time for the first and third cups... the other cups took a few tries because of Wario's Gold Mine and Rainbow Road. The first and third cups were pretty easy to get starred though.

Horribly dumb question - how do you know if you have starred a series?

Maybe I just suck enough I haven't starred any.

Your rank will have a star by the track. If you don't star it, you'll get a grade of A - E. You can triple star a track, but so far I've only managed a few double stars.

LOL - ok, I officially suck. No stars at all. Lots of As, but no stars.Correction - I tried one Grand Prix out on automatic instead of manual. Easy two stars.. I guess I just suck at manual.

I'm also using auto right now. I'm racing online for the next hour if anyone wants some easy wins.

Just got this yesterday. Has anyone bought that $20 game guide and is it worth it? I figured anything in that book could be found online for free.

How do you "unlock expert staff ghost data"? I haven't played much time trials.. so is it just doing really well in them or does it have to be online?

Add me too! I added everyone on the list and only Rocko has added me as a friend. I will be on tonight, someone should organize a race.

Its amazing how much easier this game is using Automatic than Manual. I really wish they hadnt included that in the game. I was having problems with 150cc. Finally I switched to Automatic and flew through it in a breeze starring 2 course on the way.

Woo Hoo! Got my first race time with an FBG in, mrcoolbeans himself. I now have a 2-1 record head to head against Steve, but mainly due to luck. coolbeans is sporting a 7500 ranking. Lots of fun, I'll be back later.

I was Michael in those races btw, driving as Mii in a Piranha Prowler.
