 The part of this recruiting class thing that gets me every year is the changing of stars depending on where the kid goes.
Rankings are meaningless, but I think the update is based on how the players looked in the All Star games. However, it doesn't matter to me as a certain player may not have fit in the coaches' defense/offense at the all star game.

 The part of this recruiting class thing that gets me every year is the changing of stars depending on where the kid goes.
A big part of the changes is how they looked in the All-Star events against major competition and in front of important people. Dee Hart for example ran for 100 yards in one of those national games.

Rivals has the Vols ahead of the Gators. Amazing. First time we've been ahead of the gators in anything football related in years.

Yea...UF is feeling the coaching change...and Dooley is doing a great job. As he did last year, considering the circumstances. The Kiffin move was a godsend.

Rivals started their Team Ranking in 2002. Since then, only 1 school who finished #1 did not play for a BCS Championship within 4 years...USC in '06:

2002 - Texas - won 2005 NC

2003 - LSU - won 2003 NC, and won 2007 NC

2004 - USC - won 2004 NC, lost 2005 NC

2005 - USC - lost 2005 NC

2006 - USC - no NC game, but the #2 ranked team in that year's recruiting rankigns was Florida, who would win two NC

2007 - Florida - won 2008 NC

2008 - Alabama - won 2009 NC

2009 - Alabama - won 2009 NC

2010 - USC - tbd

2011 - tbd

Hart is the one I am talking about actually....he did run for 100 yards. 79 of those were on one play with botched assignment and he was chased down from behind. I expected him to stay 4, maybe drop to 3.5 after seeing him in that game...never expected him to go UP. He was named MVP of that game too for some reason.

I'm no expert...but the game isn't the only aspect of those events studied. They work out, run, go thru 1-on-1 drills, other drills, have contests, etc. I've been reading for weeks that he'd get his 5th star, back when he was still up in the air on his commit.

I don't think they are meaningless, what they are is meaningful to a degree. OU was 8th last year at rivals, there is no way any team had more freshman make an impact than OU did. So if you are in the top 20 or so, I think you can often throw all those rankings in a hat and throw them on the floor for an order in many years. Also looking at those updated rankings, OU has the third highest score in average score per recruit.

I don't question his ability at all. Need to make that clear. I was responding to your comment about the all star games being a big part of it....if that was the case, the folks looked at the box score only and didn't watch the game.

That's why I said "all star event" instead of game...I think there is some other activities that influence rankings.

C'mon...his other 2 were Michigan and Florida. Committing to Alabama got him a bump over committing to one of the other two?

They aren't completely meaningless. But I view them more like a baseball player's batting average than a basketball player's free throw percentage. While the best in basketball are going to sink it 9/10 times, the best baseball player is going to be out 2/3 times.

Anyone know anything about Brandon Wegher. Apparently, he's transferring from Iowa to OU.
He was a 4* recruit out of Sioux City, IA. Signed with Iowa as a rb. Other schools, like Nebraska, were recruiting him as a db.He had a nice bowl game against GTech last year. Left school to deal with personal issues. Iowa fans I know said it had to do with a girlfriend (I have no idea how accurate that is).He has good speed and vision from what I've seen of him, although he's no where near as explosive as a guy like Demarco Murray.

Yup. Scout gave Brett Hundley (QB, now enrolled at UCLA), a 5th star as a result of his performance in practice and in the skills competition (he won). Strangely, he didn't play much in the UA game, the practices for which he earned his 5th star and #3 QB ranking.

Does that mean he'll become a 5* retroactively since he's transferring to OU?

So the REALLY big names left are:Jadeveon Clowney - SoCar, Alabama...FSU could be a late longshotCurtis Grant - UF, UNC, OSU....drops Pitt after coaching change....OSU the favorite?Tony Seward - Clemson, FSU, Auburn, UCLACyrus Kouandjio - Alabama, USC, Miami, Iowa...Alabama has the inside track after signing his brother last yearClowney looks unblockable at the UA game.
Steward sounds like he's FSU all the way. Hope I'm wrong, though.
The latest now is Steward had a great Clemson visit and they could be the new favorite.
With UCLA apparently hiring Randy Shannon as DC, there is speculation UCLA might have improved their chances with Steward. He didn't have Miami as one of his finalists, but he apparently had a good relationship with Shannon.

If FSU lands this guy I think they finish #1. Speaking of Miami, man they are terrible. Miss out on a good coach and have a pathetic recruiting class.

Sounds like FSU is going to finish #1 this year.
They could...but a lot can still happen with some programs near the top. For example, if Alabama lands Kouandjio (expected) and by some miracle Clowney, that'll be too much to catch.Still some big names committed who are possible flips too.As an Alabama fan, despite us having more commits in years prior to NSD...I'll still be on the edge of my seat.

Some announcement times on Wednesday:

Cyrus Kouandjio - 9:05 AM

Tony Steward - 10:00 AM

Stephone Anthony - 11:30 AM

Isaiah Crowell - 1:30 PM

Curtis Grant - 1:30 PM

Clowney will announce his plans on his birthday, February 14th.

Pretty cool retrospective up as the main article on ESPN right now. Looking at the top 150 for 2007 and judging how they panned out. Just goes to show you how difficult this can be.

yes....espnu has all day coverage
UM after 6 guys for 5ish spots should be interesting. Normally, UM is wrapped up completely before signing. Hoke's done a good job saving this class for Michigan...anything else is icing imo.

difficult? you mean predicting the future? yeah...
I thought about putting pointless but thought better of it.
 You'd be right....though I have to say it's been fun watching this year from a Michigan perspective. I don't think I've ever paid as close attention to the process has I have this year. What will it all mean? No idea.

Interesting what's going on in the state of Mississippi.

State having all the success on the the field, led by a hot young coach.

Yet of the top 7 in-state kids, Ole Miss has signed 5...and looks like a lock for this sig tomorrow from the #2 player in the state.

Seems pretty obvious why Florida didn't want Dan Mullen.

Here are some ranges from someone who understands the Rivals formula:
Alabama - 2535 to 2613 points. With Cyrus 2535. Add Pagan or another 4 star 2613. Lose Collins, points actually go up 2616.FSU - 2395 to 2560 points. If they get 5 star Tony Steward and 4 star Tim Jernigan they max out at 2560 points.Texas - 2322 - 2395 points. If Texas adds another 4 star to replace Westerman they would have 2395 points.Georgia - 2055 - 2375 points. If Georgia adds 5 Star I Crowell, J Pagan and J. Jenkins they would have 2375 points.LSU - 2224 - 2290 points. LSU adds J. Rasco, moves up to 2290 points.Auburn - 2147 - 2288 points. Auburn adds E. Florence and G. Wright. That would give Auburn 2288 points good for #6 in the country.
A big 5 or 4 star surprise or flip...like Kouandjio to Auburn...could shake it up.

Rumor has Oregon stealing a 5* from USC. De'Anthony Thomas is an athlete who is thought to be either the #1 or #2 player in the state of California. :kicksrock:

Guys on the UM radar that will be announcing tomorrow:

Possible Commits

8AM - MI OL Jake Fisher picks between Michigan and Oregon.

Noon - MD DT Darian Cooper signs on ESPNU with Michigan, Georgia Tech, or Iowa.

7PM - CO LB Leilon Willingham announces from a top 5 of Michigan, Arizona State, Central Florida, Colorado, and Washington.

OH TE/LB Frank Clark announces between Michigan and North Carolina at some point in the day.

Oh....and when are they going to do something about this over signing crap? Do they really think these universities are going to go with the "honor system" on this?

The SEC has a limit of 28. But if a kid enrolls early, he counts back to the previous year total. Plus I guess if a kid doesn't qualify or greyshirts, he won't count. Thats why South Carolina currently has 32 committed.

I just want to add that Clowney is probably 90% going to CAROLINA. @ 2 of his good friends committed to Carolina in the last 2 days, TE Jerell Adams and four-star defensive tackle Phillip Dukes. All 3 stated that they wanted to play together in college. Add to that his good friend Stephon Gilmore is a Gamecock and his high school teammate and good friend Gerald Dixon is a Gamecock commit. Also, he has strong family support who would only have a 45 minute to an hour drive to see him play his home games. If he signed with Carolina his first college game would be 10 miles from his house in Charlotte.

He won't go to FSU. He canceled an official visit there saturday a week ago to go to the SC/Kentucky game in Columbia.

Here's a link that list 5 reasons why he should go to CAROLINA.

Clowney

This class is shaping up to be pretty good with added help all over the place.

Yea...I'd be pretty surprised if he chose Alabama. Most UA fans have accepted it and moved on...with a one eye still on it looking for a miracle. He's going to be a great one....any danger of him not qualifying?
