Columbia is down by one against #2 Sparty in East Lansing at the under-4 timeout as 23-point underdogs.
Happening again tonight against mighty Portland.

Worst #1 team ever?
No doubt they are going to have their struggles, they always do early in the year. They are no worse than any of the other in the Top 5 right now. I'd rather they weren't ranked so high right now, but I don't think it matters in the big picture one way or the other to Izzo. They have a lot of work to do.

CU forcing students to attend women's BKB game to get tickets for KU's visit to Boulder

  • Students will enter through the southeast entrance of the Coors Events Center beginning at 7:30 p.m.
  • You will swipe your Buff OneCard and receive a wristband, which you will need to keep on. Your wristband guarantees you your ticket to the Kansas game. If you leave the Events Center prior to the conclusion of the game, your wristband will be removed.
  • At the conclusion of the women's basketball game, you will be asked to go onto the court to the ticket office representatives where you will be handed your ticket and your wristband will be removed.
  • At the Kansas game on December 7, you will be asked to present your ticket with your Buff OneCard for admittance. Only those students with tickets will be able to attend the Kansas game on December 7.
  • Lost or stolen tickets will not be replaced.
  • There will also be an on-line claim process for a limited number of student tickets who are unable to attend this event (minimum of 500, final number dependent on the number of students who attend this event). The on-line process will start on Dec. 2 for those who have a CU Sports Pass.

I can't think of any worse fate for my son than being one of those dorks in the Duke student section. Outside of maybe child pornographer, I suppose.

Iona made a bunch of threes in the first half to keep it close in the Phog, then came back to earth in the second half and got blown out.

Since all of Iona's talent was on the perimeter, KU pounded it inside. Ellis and Embiid were a combined 16-for-18 from the floor. The second half was an alley-oop fest; Wiggins nearly hit his chin on the rim once, and 5'11" backup PG Frank Mason threw down his first collegiate dunk.

Wiggins played great defense, hit the boards, stayed within the framework of the offense, and had a few eye-popping plays... so tomorrow Jeff Goodman will probably drop Wiggins down to like the 15th pick.

You're going to hear a bit about JoJo Embiid in the next few days. At this time last year, he wasn't even on some scouting services' Top 100 lists. He will be in the 1.04-1.07 range in the next iteration of the 2014 mock drafts. Embiid is an astonishing physical specimen, but if you programmed his skills into a video game, his Awareness rating would be like a 35. Didn't stop him from dominating some mid-major big men tonight, though. Hopefully SportsCenter will include a shot of Embiid's dad in the highlights tonight - he wore a suit to the game and pretty much looked like a pimp who never has trouble getting his money from his #####es. ETA: apparently tonight was the first time Embiid's dad had seen him play in person. Wow.

Brannen Greene didn't play. No official reason was given, but speculation is he's in Self's doghouse for a mix of practice-related and off-court issues. Conner Frankamp got Greene's spot in the rotation tonight; he hit a three-pointer and showed a little more defensive acumen than expected. He's not fast end-to-end, but he's quick across small spaces and has great hands.

I wish Frankamp would have gone to a mid-major. That would have been so much fun.

Marcus Smart could have beat Memphis tonight with a mix of walk-ons and intramural all-stars from campus. Hopeful the Jayhawks will have the conference regular season put away before the visit to Stillwater on March 1.

Needs more Frankamp.
Hit a three tonight. Glad to have him, but if he stayed a little closer to home and signed with the Shockers, he'd be starting with Wiggins's older brother and Cleanthony Early.

I know we have a thread for the top pick discussion, but everyone who says anyone other than Wiggins will be the top pick is just flat-out wrong. He's going to be a Pippen-caliber defender in the Association and can score without dominating the ball.

Curious to see if Perry Ellis can keep his scoring barrage up against major conference bigs. So far he's putting up great numbers, but it's been against midmajors and Jabari Parker, so it's hard to put much stock in it yet.

KU/Towson wasn't televised nationally, but it might get some run on SportsCenter. Jayhawks had 19 assists tonight, and about 17 of them were alley-oops. It was some Globetrotters #### out there. Hope they can keep it up against some real competition in the Bahamas.

Our Gophers are undefeated, if you'd like to ditch those filthy Jayhawks and come back to your roots we'll allow it.

Strong senior class for Twin Cities hoops, too. De La Salle is a powerhouse, Osseo has a couple of guys who will go D-I, and that Xavier commit from Lakeville has great form on his jumper and can bomb it.

I know of zero Osseo people, and none of anyone is going to be a Gopher. Why you be so mean?

Keep an eye on Nik Stauskas at Michigan. I know last year most people just saw him as a 3 point specialist. He has added 15 pounds and 6 inches to his vertical. He is going to be scoring 20+ points a night and doing it from all over the court. In the final minutes last night, FSU had no answer (except to keep fouling) Stauskas as he drove to the basket over and over.

He is much more explosive than people think.

DeLaSalle vs Apple Valley on Dec. 7 is going to be the game of the year for MN High School Basketball. They are ranked #26 and #23 in the nation, respectively.

Florida plays great defense on the final possession only to have the ball roll back to Napier after a miss for the game-winner at the buzzer.

Did not want to start another thread, but the UK v. Baylor women's game was a great finish. 4-ot, with a game tying three rimming out at the buzzer.

Harrisons sucking it up again...bad decisions, bad shots, bad body language.
Cal has his work cut out for him. Randle is good enough to be the centerpiece of a Final Four team, and last night Young seemed to be an improved player from what I saw against Michigan State. But like you said, the Harrisons kinda drift in and out of the game. Poythress has bizarrely shown negative improvement from last season. Cauley-Stein's defense last night was abysmal, and a lot of Baylor's rebounding edge is on him, too.

Baylor has a ton of talent, and hybrid zones can cause a bit of a learning curve against teams that don't face them much. But that game was winnable for UK - Rico Gathers shouldn't he able to come off Baylor's bench and dominate the hustle stats against a team with UK's talent.

No Reid Travis tonight for DeLaSalle. Stress fracture. Still should be a good game, but gotta lean Eagles with no Travis in the lineup. Probably going to miss the Osseo game next week, too.

PG is going to be another problem all year. Harrison may not be an improvement from Harrow. That's terrible.

Colorado beat KU in Boulder on a 30-footer at the buzzer. Frustrating loss, but the atmosphere was great preparation for the freshmen, who got a taste of what conference road games will be like.

IIRC KU missed 11 3PAs in a row. It was at least 10. Most of them were good looks that just didn't drop. Ton of foul trouble, too - between fouls and pacing for altitude, 12 guys played in the first half.

KU debuted a 3-2 zone in the second half with Wiggins engaging the PG, the guards on the wings, and the bigs on the blocks. It was effective at getting the ball out of the PG's hands, not so great at preventing open corner threes.

Curious to see how the team responds when playing Florida on Tuesday.
