Madden Gras is freakin awesome! Music. Food. Girls. Free stuff everywhere.

There's a massive stage set up at Jackson square. Music from cool jazz to Big Boi.

A madden gras parade down Bourbon street with free throws (madden gras beads, t shirts, cups, hurricane and grenade glasses). Free monster and red bulls.

There's a big screen PS3 with the Madden2011 game for competition. The line is pretty long.

Ricky Jackson is autographing and tossing stuff. Awesome. Wish you were here.

Figured I'd bump this up as it's been a while...

Heading down Halloween weekend. Saturday night we're doing dinner at Tipsy's place but we're looking for a spot to get some brunch on Sunday. Nothing too over the top expensive and we will have one guy with us who is deathly allergic to peanuts so we'll need a place that will be accommodating about food prep.

IDeally it will be something within a half dozen blocks or so of canal/bourbon as we're staying at the Mariott and will likely be in somewhat rough shape that morning/early afternoon. I figure we'll be looking to eat around 11am or Noon.

Also, we will be with a ground of at least 10 folks... so they'll need to be able to accommodate a group as well.

I know... tons of restrictions.... Let me know what you guys have got. :X

what's over the top expensive?...better yet, give me a price range.

Would love to keep it under $20/head for food. I don't mind throwing more but some of our group will ##### after dropping some coin at Dante's the night before. If there's a great place a little out of that range that's fine... jus throwing that number out there. Bonus points for having a good bloody mary.

Whenever we hit up brunch, it's never downtown (for convenience), so I don't have any experience with these (only lunch/dinner) but here ya go:Luke is one of my favorite restaurants....however it's toeing the $20 line...check out the menu and roll with it if you think it'll work. A few block walk from your hotel.

Palace Cafe is another very soild well known NOLA restaurant. A little less expensive then Luke....I've never had brunch there, but lunch/dinner is always good. Also a little closer to your hotel then Luke. If it's nice weather, you can eat outside as well.

Ole Coffee Pot is more casual/inexpensive then the two above, and it's definitely more breakfast then brunch...but I figured I'd throw it out there. I'm not positive they take reservations though, so with a big group you might have to wait...but I would call just to make sure. Also, it's right down from Pat O's so it's a little more of a walk then the other two.

Never had the bloody mary's at any of them...but any good new orleans brunch should have a good bloody.

Also, if you're willing to cab it...this place is great...it's in the bywater (probably a 3 mile drive from your hotel)...but it's less expensive...and you get a more laid back atmosphere - http://www.elizabeths-restaurant.com

Excellent. Thanks TF :excited:

Was downtown over the weekend, stayed at the Hilton near the Riverwalk. The restaurant in the hotel (Drago's) was ok but nowhere near worth the price.

Watched the game at "Time Out" on the River, good sized burgers and some nice tall Abitas helped take that Saints loss a little easier. There were about 8 damn Browns fans in that place, and they were psyched. Totally cool though, I would have been the same way.

Woke to see my Drew Brees thread in the SP had been deleted overnight, which made me chuckle. Thought I had successfully phrased that thread to keep it viable. Oh well.

Given the proximity and the fact that we will likely be in rough shape that morning, I think we're going to go with Palace Cafe (just about next door to the Mariott). Elizabeths looks great but nobody seems to want to mess with coordinating multiple cabs with a group of 10-12 while hung over. Best to just have a place to stumble over to.

The menu at Palace Cafe looks spectacular so I think it will work just fine. :moneybag:

What did you get at Drago's? I've been a bunch and have never been disappointed. I can understand how it's a tad pricy (I wonder if they markup the hotel location above their Metairie one)

Talked myself out of the charbroiled oysters which looked good and went with a shrimp pasta dish. I had just gotten into town and didn't want to attack my stomach with charbroiled oysters that early. Compared to the spicy cajun pasta I got a stones throw away at Gordon Biersch, Drago's paled. On a good note, it was a Friday night and we were seated right away. Staff at Dragos was excellent.

Gotcha....gotta go with the oysters though when you're at Dragos. For a chain, Gordon Biersch is very good

A swing and a miss x2.

Random Question.

I absolutely LOVED the Cochon De Lait PoBoy that Wanda Walker serves up at Jazzfest. Amazing sammich. I see they have a Walkers Southern Style BBQ locations up off Haynes in lakefront area... but is there anywhere i the quarter who might serve a comparable version?

TIA

Don't know about that. But I do know that the most underrated shrimp po-boy in the quarter is served up at Oceana.

Went to Couchon, then DBA last night. Feel like hell today, but it was worth it.
:hey: Nice combo there
Ended up in a very cool conversation with Marlon Jordan. I asked him about his horn, which seemed weathered and unique. Learned that he lost his horn in Katrina, but was one of the few musicians who made it a point to restore the jazz scene. Wyton Marsalis gave him the horn, which was customized. Loved that place.Edited: Tipsy, see you in the thread. I'll be coming by your joint this week. Can't wait.
I will be there every night this week. FYI...Wednesday we are part of the monthly tapas crawl here in the neighborhood. An article came out in the Times Pic on Friday, so this on should be really busy. See ya.

Was in town last week for some sales calls and stayed at the Hampton Inn off of Carondolet, just east of Canal. Nice location in an renovated, old building.

Ate at a place I found on Rue Dauphine (one block north of Bourbon, b/w Bienville and Conti) that was excellent, Louisiana Bistro. It was a small place, maybe fifteen 4-tops total. The food was great and I loved his BP (##### please) additions to the menu, see menu link.

To poke fun at the BP oil spill, here are a few of the items on the menu (actual things you can order):

bpQ Shrimp

Jumbo gulf shrimp in a black pepper sauce

Boudin Booms

Roast boudin sausage links protecting a "beach" from caramelized onion pork glace

Dirty Bird

Crisp broiled oil poached duck leg confit with dirty rice covered by a mysterious, delicious dark goo :stirspot:

I was eating by myself that night but apparently the chef also offers a "Feed Me" menu that he will make uniquely for your table after coming out of the kitchen and asking your table a few questions about likes/dislikes.

I'll definitely head back there again next time I'm in town.

Went to Dante's Kitchen last night.Tipsy is a wonderful guy and the restaurant is thoroughly enjoyable. Great atmosphere. They were participating in a tapas crawl so there was a ton of good energy and foot traffic around the neighborhood. Now that I'm getting old and had a serious bender Monday night, I was still feeling a little rough so went for a smaller meal. Had the duck two ways, which was great... But prior to that I had the homemade Boudin Rouge, which was honest-to-goodness one of the best plates of anything I've ever eaten. Besides the sausage itself being perfect, it's a very creative and extremely well balanced plate of food. There's a perfect cajun kick that gets enhanced by roasted peppers and the acid from black peppercorn mustard, then offset by the sweet of preserved peaches. Heaven.Everything I thought it would be and more. It may not be Tipsy's restaurant on paper, but he's clearly the heart and soul of the place. Very interesting menu with many things yet to try. Can't wait to go back. Thanks Tipsy!
I would argue the soul of the place is Chefs food. I may be the heart though since I do wear mine on my sleeve.

Did mr ham go on any doomsday rants in the restaurant or hand out any literature to your patrons? :( (playin with ya MrHam...)

finally i get to come back to NOLA for work! cant wait to visit Dante's!!!
Meh....its overrated. The guy at the desk is a real jerk.
Tipsy - where did your restaurant experience come from again? I know you told me once, but I forgot......
I started working private diner parties for my moms friends when I was 12. She opened a restaurant in Pensacola when I was 13 and I've basically been doing this crap since then. Dante's is my 12th restaurant, but only my 3rd one since turning 19. 7 years here, 5 at a place in oregon, and 5 at Figaro's on maple when it first opened.
Tipsy--you and I probably know each other from Maple Street back in the day. I worked many years in a Maple St establishment (TJ"s brah) and was very happy when Figaro's opened.

Spent quite a few night at TJ's in high school. Underage drinking and fights...can't beat it

Currently in New Orleans with the wife....will do a full write-up later of what we've done since Friday. Going to Dante's tonite....

Tipsy, will you be there? Sent ya a PM...Looking forward to it based on comments from the thread.

Yeah you right. Spent a week down in NO over the holidays--cafe du mond, felix's, Dr John at Tips uptown, Messinas, Camelia Grill, Tracey's on Magazine, R & O's in Bucktown, etc.....

do yourself a favor and get the shrimp and grits and the chicken under a brick!

IconI heartily recommend Bayona for this

Smoked Duck, Cashew-Peanut Butter and Pepper Jelly Sandwich 12.00

and just about everything else there. One of my favorite places in town. Susan Spicer home restaurant.

Headed back right now.....maybe I will see ya after all.

Wish I would have seen this thread before we went to the sugar bowl. Took me a little bit to get used to the whole drink all day then drink all night but what a fun town to visit. Lafittes Blacksmith bar was pretty sweet at night. We did a ghost tour which was pretty cool and spent a fair amount of time at a hole in the wall irish bar. 2 and 3 for 1 specials basically the whole time we were there. Ate at emerils, cafe du monde, mulattes, deanies, and riverside cafe. I will definetly be back if the Buckeyes are playing in the sugar or the BCS title game.

Wife and I flew into NO around 12pm on Friday. Hotel room at the Windsor Court wasn't ready, so we spent the afternoon wandering the French Quarter. Had beignets at Cafe Du Monde. Went out that nite to eat at GW Fins. Her oyster appetizer was the best oysters she's ever had, and she loved the wood-grilled Butterfish as her entree. My filet was good, but forgettable. Desserts were decent. Went on Bourbon St. After that and hit a few bars for some live music.

Saturday morning, based on Tripadvisor reviews, took a 3 hour bicycle tour from Confederacy of Cruisers. Saw the Bywater, Marigny, and Treme sections. Highly recommend this trip for the history as well as opening up a section of New Orleans you'd probably never go see on your own. Very entertaining guide named Cassidy, too, that took us to a dive bar while on the trip that had a good $3 bloody mary.

Had lunch at the hotel, then rested for an hour. Walked over to the French Quarter to watch the Steelers-Ravens game. That night went to eat at Coquette in the Garden District. Amazing food. Wife had the chicken breast and I had the Wagyu sirloin that was probably one if the best steaks I've ever had. Then we took a cab over to Frenchman street where we went to see John Boutte play at DBA. Really liked that bar. Had a seat where we could simultaneously watch/listen to the band while keeping an eye on the Falcons-Packers game. No smoking either, which was a big big plus for the allergies. The Spotted Cat is right across the street. Next time I come back to NO I'm going to try to find a small boutique hotel or B&B near Frenchman St. as we preferred that area over any other section of NO.

Sunday morning my wife, a Catholic, went to mass at St.Augustine's in the Treme. It's the oldest fully integrated church in America, and they do a "jazz service" at 10 am. If any of you are interested in that sort if thing, she said it was one of the best parts of our trip. We had a very good brunch at Muriel's, then we went to the WW II museum. It was pretty good, but the highlight is clearly the 4D "Beyond all Boundaries" movie narrated by Tom Hanks in the building across the street.

Sunday night we finally made it to Dante's, and it was well worth the wait. I had the Chicken under the Brick, and my wife had the Redfish, and both were amazingly good. Had the cauliflower and gruyere Mac and cheese for sides, and tried a couple of their signature cocktails. Big thanks to Tipsy for the delicious desserts. He was gracious enough to stop by and talk to us at the table for a bit, and we relished in our FBG nerd status as my wife just shook her head...everything was great, and well worth the cab ride, where we saw all the swanky houses on St. Charles.

Thanks also to Tiger Fan for his suggestions. We had an awesome trip!

I'll be going in 2 weeks to see my nephew (he's been going to through some lousy family stuff on top of moving around a lot). Any ideas for something good for an 11 year old?

I'll be perfectly honest, that I can't think of any...not because there aren't any, but b/c none of my friends have kids in that age range, and I'm not sure what you're in to when you're 11. We have a good zoo and acquarium, but is that too "cheesy" for an 11 year old? I don't know? I guess a swamp tour would probably be pretty cool, he's be able to see some aligators :blackdot:

The Insectarium is another possibility along those same lines depending on his interests.

Heading down to NO this weekend and looking for some reasonably priced places. Dante's brunch is on the itinerary for Sat or Sun if we have the time. Here's a list of places I came across:

Johnny's Po-Boy

Cochon Butcher

Stanley

The Joint

Casamento's

These are my thoughts too for our next visit. Looking at staying at the Le Richelieu for close proximity to Frenchman St. We live about a 4.5 hour drive away and like to go over and live it up for a weekend in the quarter- always a great time. We also have Jacque Imos on our list to hit for dinner one night, our friends swear by it.

I must be the only one who doesn't care for Cafe du Monde- that place is nasty as your feet will stick to the floor with powdered sugar everywhere and chickery should not be in coffee.

Going to be here March 25-30 with my gf. We are staying at the St. James hotel, don't know much about it but it came recommended by a friend and I got a good package deal with airfare.

Looking for some "can't miss" stuff, food, entertainment etc. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Also looking for a 5 star dinner for the 28th.

The Joint is probably the best BBQ in New Orleans (there's a few places in some suburbs that compare). Cool little atmosphere too.Johnny's is my favorite po boy place. I think I got the roast beef debris/cheese fry po-boy last time I was there  - Cash only IIRCCochon Butcher - I've been once, and I thought it was ok. Warning, it's pretty small; so during a busy lunch it might be tough to get a seat. All of these are reasonably priced though. Haven't been to Stanley or Casamento's though, perhaps some others can chime in.
