Damn you are planning on packing an awful lot into a few days. Will you have a car or will you be taking a cab everywhere?

It's Cafe du Monde (Du Monde c'est Francais pour "World"). It's a neat experience but I would try it on monday or tuesday before leaving town. It's a good ways from where you're at and for me, honestly, it was nothing special. The coffee is alright but nothing special (chickory coffee is a unique flavor), and the beignet are tasty but, again, nothing amazing. The lines for this place can be ABSURD on the weekends. Very much a tourist hotspot.

NOLA is rife with all sorts of tours but I can't speak to any of them. Honestly I enjoy just wandering around the quarter (off bourbon) when there. Tons of great little art galleries and shops. I won't lie when I say 80% of what I do in NOLA is eat amazing food and drink booze though
You might be the only person ever that doesn't love a beignet :boxing:

Agree the lines can be very long though. Monday/Tuesday morning suggestion is solid

I'm going this weekend and I have a good list of places to eat. Like [icon] said above, my goal is to eat awesome food and drink a lot. So, in my early stages of drinking each day I am going to care a lot more about quality than later on. Where is a good place to find a nice selection of quality beers, preferably on tap?
If you're uptown, the bulldog on Magazine or Cooter Browns on St. Charles has a great selection.

In the quarter itselft, I can't think of a place that has an overwhelming quality beer selection

I will be going to New Orleans for Wrestlemania weekend and just had a general question about the French Quarter area. Do people usually take a cab over there or a public transportation to get there? I got a hotel at Metairie (hopefully it isn't too far away) and haven't seen the transportation set up to the heart of new Orleans. I have a feeling that there is parking space but I am pretty sure driving to and from won't be a good idea for a newbie :suds: :hangover:
Public transportation from Metairie sucks. A cab should only be $20 (which is what parking would cost)...that's the way to go. There are plenty of cabs to be had

Metarie... I'd cab it if you're going to be drinking.
Wow - Metarie is a bit away - and a cab will run some dough. Can you cancel that? Maybe see about a Priceline/Hotwire - check the French Quarter or Central Business District/Warehouse District/Convention Center - and you'll be in a lot better shape.

But around the Arena/Superdome there are a lot of surface parking lots - and then you can walk or catch trolley over to the Quarter if that is where you want to go - heading back late at night - keep your eyes and ears open as you walk back to the car if you are out late.
It's not that far away - 15 minute cab ride with no traffic

from the looks of it Metarie is about 6 miles away from the action.

Looking at hotels in the area for that weekend, they are about 50 a night more unless I want to stay at some of these inns/bed and breakfast places. Kind of prefer the name brands for places I am not familiar with. Also have to take into account that the money I save in cabs will probably have to go to valet parking. Maybe when I get my tax refund I will look for closer/more expensive places

How close is the Harrah's casino to the Quarter?
5 minute walk. For a difference of $50/night, I'd definitely pick something in the FQ or CBD. You won't regret it.
Agree. Hotel parking can be expensive, so if you want to save some dough; park in Lakeside Mall in Metairie for free (google it) and get a cab to take you to your hotel. A tad inconvenient, but staying downtown will make for a much better experience.

How close is the Harrah's casino next to the Quarter?
A 10-15 minute walk or so to the Superdome - or jump on street car on Canal up to Rampart and walk over - you could get a pedicab as well.

Casino is ok - a bit smoky for me. Casinos in Colorado are non smoking so when you hit Harrahs it really overwhelms you.

Metarie is out near the airport - and if your Hotel is out there - you might want to find out the cost of a cab direct from hotel to FQ. The fixed price from the airport is around $33 for 2 people - so figure out if it's possible to have the hotel van drop you off at airport and get a fixed cab rate into the city - it might be cheaper. I've never paid attention to the surface parking rates during a event at Superdome because I never have car - but up close I bet it's a pretty steep price. If you want to drive maybe park at Harrahs - go to Wrestlemania - come back to casino and drop some money - (get a Total Rewards card before if you don't have one and give to pit crew) and maybe the parking rate goes down.
FYI - Metairie is not near the airport, that's Kenner. Metairie shouldn't be more than 20 minutes to get to the Superdome

I'm a bit surprised at the consensus on Port of Call, but I'm open to Company Burger or wherever else. My wife is going to take some convincing though. The monsoon always sneaks up on her too so that's a bonus.

The atmosphere and drinks at port of call are cool; but I guess I don't view NOLA as a burger town, so why not eat what you can't really get somewhere else

I can't argue with that logic. It's definitely not somewhere we'd go if only there for a weekend.

Thanks GB... I've never lived in NOLA but am a huge fan of the cuisine and have been taking several trips down there every year for the last 2 decades  Doesn't hurt that an old college roommate lives down there, and I've got several other friends who know the city well. Have picked a lot of brains ;) I love the Crecent City... no doubt.

I will add this though;

We will have a party of 11-12. Coming in around 3pm Friday and looking for best bang for the buck oysters within a reasonable walk from the head of Bourbon? Must have Chargrilled Options?

My experiences:

Acme / Felix's ; Interchangeable.. very convenient... perhaps a little pricy? Cheaper comparable options nearby?

Luke: Close but pricy

Dragos : A little farther of a walk... haven't been. Price/Quality?

Royal House / Desire : I avoid. Overpriced and have had subpar oysters at each. Thoughts?

Other ideas/suggestions?

I know there are a ton of Jacques-Imo's fans here... but that's a pretty big ride across town for a big group when we're only in town for 48 hours.

Saturday plan is Wake up, St Charles Streetcar over to near Tipsys. (Do they enforce no drinks on the car?) Lunch at McClures, drinks across the street... then we're hoofing it / pub crawling down Magazine to Louisiana. A buddy who lives in that area says there is a fun cluster of bars there and a couple bars along Magazine to reload at on the way. Skip out of that area around 3-4pm and head back to the hotels to shower up and get ready for dinner.

Still hammering out dinner plans... unsure. Something solid in the quarter area but not too pricey. Talking to the Birthday Boy. Going out that night in the quarter most likely. May make our way over to Frenchmen Street or around the area depending on what my local buddy Daren has in store for us.

Sunday, we board the train at 2 so the goal is to grab a bite for brunch somewhere before cabbing over to Amtrak to board up. Cafe Amelie and Palace Cafe are on the radar currently.

this seems like something my wife and I would enjoy. Do you remember how long it was and how much money. Couldn't find either on the web site.
Probably should call them. It's been a couple of years. If memory serves, the tour is between 2.5-3 hours long, and runs about $40 per person?Edit: just looked at website. $49 per person. Look at the bottom of the "creole bike tour" page.

My perfect 3 days in NOLA if I were a visitor unfamiliar with the city.

Coffee & Beignets at Cafe Du Monde....although I'd get mine to go and go to river behind it and enjoy the view while you munch.

A stroll down Decatur to the French Market at the end

Turn around and walk back to Molly's and get a drink...preferably a bloody

Split a muffuletta with your friend at Central Grocery

Have a walk down royal street.

Get a lucky dog at some point....preferably if you are drunk.

Take the canal street car out to the cemetaries and walk around.

Take a nap under a tree at city park....or at least take a bike ride through it.

Grab a shrimp poboy at Parkway tavern

A dozen raw oysters at casementos....then a dozen chargrilled at dragos or acme

Fancy brunch at Commanders

Fancy dinner at Bayona

Roast beef poboy at Domelises or Parasols

Fried Chicken at Mchardys, Willie Mae's Scotch house, or Dooky Chase.

Red Beans & Rice @ Rivershack on Mondays

Take a streetcar up st. charles.

Brunch @ Dante's Kitchen.

with the kids....zoo, aquarium, and insectarium (sp) maybe a swamp tour

See the Saints play in the dome

Take a river cruise on the paddlewheel

Drink a sazerac at the Napoleon house.

Get an old fashioned at Lafites Blacksmith shop

Get a fancy drink at Cure

Get some gumbo by your momma and dems

See the rebirth at the Maple leaf or Walter Wolfman Washington

Find where Kermit Ruffins is playing or Trombone shorty

Go to a show at Tipitinas but not the House of Blues

and duh...barbecue at McClure's

Not a bad list. I'm gonna take a stab at my ideal 3 days as well...let me give it some thought.

Just confirmed plans to hit the Sugar Bowl!! Arrive on NYE and stay until Friday. It's our 3rd trip in 2 years, so may try to do a few different things this time.

Definitely will hit McClures for lunch one day...you open on 1/1 or 1/2, Tipsy?

Would like to hit the D-Day museum...maybe while wife shops the french markets.

Want to check band list for Tipitina's, etc. Meters or Neville's around?

I think we are going to dinner at Luke on Wed night.

Otherwise not sure what 'different' I can do...probably a lot of the usual stumbling around the qtr...I'm sure an afternoon at Razoo's courtyard.

I know this thread helped me, so here is a recap of my few days there

Arrived at the hotel Saturday around 4:30. We stayed at the Maison St Charles. We were upgraded to a suite and the room kicked ###. For the local guys, the hotel is directly across from Emerils Delmonico restaurant. It wasnt in the greatest of neighborhoods, but far from the worst. The only "problem" was the large number of homeless who lived under the bridge that is right there. But they didnt bother you once you walked by. We gave our change to one guy and he was visibly pissed that was all we gave him. When did homeless people become prim a donnas. Anyway, we hopped on the St Charles street car and headed down to the French Quarter.

We walked around a bit and had a 6:00 K Paul reservation. We started with the buffalo frog legs and onion rings which were really good. I went with the surf and turf of blacked filet and blackened Drum fish. It was very good. My wife got the chicken jambalaya which she enjoyed.

We then walked around Bourbon street a little taking in the action. I dont drink and she got a pina colada. I actually was a little sad as we walked down because of all the beggers there were. Add the people performing and you couldnt walk 10 feet without seeing someone asking for money in some way. And it also seemed like all of the gutter punx (what we call them in NYC) had dogs with them as well. That made me mad since they couldnt feed them seleves and now they werent feeding the dogs either. We dont stay out late so we headed back to the hotel around 10:00 on the street car which stopped right outside our hotel.

Before heading back, we stopped at Cafe Beignet to grab some. Apparently they ran out and had to make more since we waited a half hour for them. What I am about to write has been termed as blasphemy, but we loved them. They were 100 times better than Du mond. My wife and I both agreed. They were big and doughey and hot and delicious. I could only eat one. Same with my wife and we had one leftover for breakfast/snack for the next day. At Dumond, we easily ate 3 each and could have probably had more.

The next morning we woke up and walked to the WWII museum. It is really a D Day museum but was fantastic anyway. We also paid the extra to see the 4D movie that Ron Howard created. Very good experience. It was then time to go to McClures BBQ for lunch. I posted my thoughts in that thread. We took the street car all the way up to where it stopped due to construction (Louisiana street I think) and then just walked the rest of the way. Lunch was great and after we headed back to the hotel for a little.

We headed back down to the Quarter Sunday night to do some shopping. We ate at Pier 424 which I was expecting some crappy meal. I wasnt hungry since I had a huge lunch so I went with a half dozen char-grilled oysters. They were very good so that was a nice surprise. After hanging out for a bit we went back to the hotel.

Monday morning we had the bike tour with confederacy of cruisers for 10:00. We hopped on the streetcar and headed down Decauter for Cafe Dumond. As I said, we were not impressed and prefered Beignet much more. We got to Washington Square park at 9:30 and waited in the park for our tour guide. A huge thanks to whoever it was that reccomended these guys. The tour and tour guide was awesome. That lasted until 1:15. We then headed over to Coops Place for a po boy. I had the shrimp and oyster po boy and my wife had the sampler which had gumbo, rabbit jambalaya and red beans and rice. Coops was a great place to eat. The po boy was great.

Monday night we had dinner at Dantes Kitchen. Holy #### is all I can say. Best meal we had there and maybe anywhere. The chicken under a brick was the best chicken we had both ever eaten. The shrimp and grits appetizer was great as well. So happy we took the street car all the way up here. I was concerned it would take a long time but only took about a half hour from hotel to stop. We walked up Maple to the restaurant. If you go to New Orleans, you have to eat here. Bottom line

Tuesday we headed out to Mardi Gras world. We caught a free shuttle from the Crown Plaza. Was fun and cool, although a little over priced. There was a coupon in a map we used. We then headed into Acme Oyster for lunch. Just as we sat down, our flight to NY was cancelled. I spent the better part of 20 minutes getting us a new flight for Wednesday. The lady that worked there was so concerned that I missed the hot chargrilled oysters that she brought over an additional half dozen on the house. And thankfully she did. They were amazing. Had a po boy here as well but it wasnt as good as Coops.

I started to not feel great and we didnt do anything on Tuesday night which was fine with both of us. I was a little upset I didnt get to go to Popeye's which was 50 feet away from the hotel but it is what it is. We got a cab at 5:30am on Wednesday and headed home.

All in all, it was a great trip. Probably should not have had the po boy at Acme so I could have a better dinner but you live and learn.

I was curious how far is the walking distance from French quarter to Harrah's Casino. I was planning on going down to the House of Blues on a Thursday night for a show and then spend the rest of the night walking about the Quarter and finishing at the casino. figure getting a taxi back to hotel would be easier at the casino then downtown.

It is about a 2-5 minute walk from the HOB to Harrahs depending on the light crossing Canal - good idea on getting a cab at Harrahs they really line up there and it's less of a fight in traffic then the FQ

the quarter js pretty big but harrahs is very close to the main part of bourbon and such.

Royal House / Desire : I avoid. Overpriced and have had subpar oysters at each. Thoughts?

Agree on the similarities between Acme/Felix's. I never went "oyster hunting" down there as a specialty, I do know that Drago's is a can't miss on the grilled oysters. Just go there and have a dozen a piece and move on. You will want to eat more, but they are so rich its not a good idea if you plan to eat/or do much else for the night. I did find this link for oyster houses:

http://www.thrillist.com/eat/new-orleans/best-oysters-in-new-orleans-how-to-do-oysters-in-nola

My favorite restaurants and recommendations are in general order of preference - but all are great. These are not mid-range, but not a lot down there is going to be cheap unless its fried, sandwiches, or not so hot. Which would be a shame in such a great food location for a few more bucks.

Solid list. Been to all of these except for Bayona. Revolution is extremely tough to get a reservation on a weekend, so plan ahead. Personally, I think Herbsaint is overrated, but have only been there for lunch. But it's still good...just live in a city that has that many good restaurants where I do t need to give it another shot.

rent the little beach cruiser go cart things...great way to see the city. and definitely skip port of call for burgers....it was good 15 years ago but things changed for the worse. Company Burger or Cowbell for a burger if you must
Wife and I did an awesome bike tour of the Creole/Treme/Bywater section of New Orleans with Confederacy of Cruisers Bike Tours. And before you say you don't want to excercise on vacation, it's very leisurely paced, and my fata## self had no problem keeping up with the others.

TF > Want to give credit to Stubby for this one. Here is the link. We did the Creole tour as well, although I am sure the food and drink tours are great also. Was worth every penny. See if you can get a tour with Laura. I thought she was great

Glad you had a good time, Acer!

Locals - the wifey wants to go to Commanders for our anniversary. She is a N.O. Gal and has never been. I am from BR and never been. Personally I would rather August, etc., but long story short how far out to make reservations for 2 and dinner, lunch, or brunch?

Tipsy great list....

TF - wifey and I have the Zoo annual membership thing. It pays for itself after 2 trips. Covers the zoo, aquarium, and insectarium.

I have done the ghost tour in the quarter and it was interesting from a historical perspective. I really like to learn about the history of our home.

Not sure, it's been a while since I've been. I'd book it as soon as possible just to be safe.

Here are some tourist notes from New Orleans after my trip to Wrestlemania last week in no order of importance:

1. I went to Bourbon Street twice on Thursday night and Saturday night. While both nights are crazy fun but what day was better depends on your age bracket I think. As a 41 year old I think you get the true NO experience on Thursday night. I went to bars that had incredible jazz and R&B music on Thursday that turned in a hip hop club with the same 4 songs on Saturday night. Also many things I could do freely on Thursday night cost about $5 to $10 on a Saturday night like walking into bars with other drinks and going up to the balcony area.

2. If you have a weak bladder then bring extra money because they are not fans of people using their places to take a piss. and nothing helps a bad situation then ordering another beer ;)

3. I didn't really get to enjoy the traditional NO begniets (badly misspelled I know) but there was a place called District Donuts and Sliders that have donuts the size of your head in so many great flavor. Oh and try the duck sliders as well :excited:

4. Apparently people in NO when ordering a slice of pizza just have to drink a margarita or daiquiri with it. Must have been about 8 of those places in French Quarter

5. I went to Willie Mae's Scotch House and while I agree that their fried chicken is top notch those butter beans are just  . I don't know if butter beans are always this good or it was the sauce but that was better than the chicken.

6. I wanted to bring home alligators to DC area just so I can enjoy their fine meat. I had an alligator sausage Po Boy at Daisy Dukes and my god was it good. After that I couldn't help but eat anything with gator in it. Speaking of Po Boy I thought those were something that you really only get at restaurants but they were selling those at gas stations and liquor stores like they were slices of pizza. God bless you

7. If you ever go to New Orleans you have to see the World War 2 Museum. There is so much awesome stuff to see that I felt guilty only spending 3 hours there. i went to see the tom Hanks 4D "Beyond all Boundaries" show and it was incredible.

Probably missing a bunch of stuff but yeah I think everyone has to enjoy new Orleans at least once. Great attitude, great food, great music.

Found this thread courtesy of the NO bachelor party thread. While I wasn't the OP there, I'm going to one in a month and the best man needs some help planning. I've seen tons of good dinner recommendations in here, but can anyone help narrow down the list a bit with those that are good for a large group (figure 12-14 guys)? Figure $100-$150 a man with food and drinks.

These are all good restaurants...but some are probably geared more towards dates vs. bachelor parties IMO. Out of all of those I would say that Cochon is the best fit.

I think the 2 best are Dante's Kitchen and Jacques Imo's...although you'll need to cab it from downtown to go there.

If you want another good option for downtown, try Emeril's NOLA. Whatever you do, book now for a group that large

i second Dante's and Jacques Imos. And of couse you want to go over to McClures. I did a bachelor party in NOLA two years ago with a bit of a rawkus group. Jacques Imos and Dantes were two places i didnt worry about us being way too loud. Also, just as a tip, make reservations early since you have a large group. And also, maybe just let folks do what they want for food except for one or two big dinners out. i know for us, once folks hit bourbon st during the day, getting folks to come together for a dinner was challenging.

ETA: Cochon Butcher for lunch as also worth a visit.

Agreed, though I thought Revolution was kinda loud. Do they have a small banquet room?

can't remember off hand...only went once, but I would assume they do. FWIW, that's literally the hardest restaurant to get into in town right now (we had to wait 3 weeks for a Friday night opening)...so getting 12 in could be a chore

Good point, this is essentially a list of best or most liked NO restaurants. You could also add in Gautreau's, Galatoire's (yes, it's a party in there some days/nights, and the location is perfect for rolling into Bourbon), Irene's (if you're including Tommy's...), Luke, and Stella. Maybe not all are great for a bachelor party - I also am not sure why some think Dante's is great for such an event (food's great but the atmosphere is not that), if you're that far Uptown already I'd say Jacque Imo's is perfect for that kind of party though. You can also hit Maple Leaf next door right after.

I would also add a new entry - Peche. It's starting to outstrip Emeril's in terms of the crowd and the food IMO, and it does have a vibe where a bachelor party type crew could have a plenty good time, eat and drink well and be in the middle of the action where they can land from anywhere and go in any direction.

Yeah - we had a party of 4 and got in that night - but had to eat at a table in the bar area. Really good food though - and eclectic menu which I like.

Just spent a great week in NO. Lots of family and friend events but ate at some old standbys and a couple new places:

Mothers for lunch--great as usual. Roast Beef po boy with extra debris.

Cochon Butcher--unbelievable. Best meal of the trip. Pork Belly sandwich and all of the sides were great. We had eaten at Cochon before but never at Butcher and it didnt let us down.

Superior Seafood for oysters and such. Pretty good as usual.

Ignatius Cafe on Magazine was better than I expected. Cochon du lait po boy was great and they had $2 martinis.

McClure's Barbecue was excellent. All meat all sides was pretty overwhelming and delicious and we took some with us when we left. No tshirts! Sold out.

Another old standby: Joey K's for a dinner with friends. Good solid comfort food, every time.

The oldest old standby: Original Camelia Grill for breakfast. The whole restaurant sang happy birthday to my four year old daughter.

Cafe du Mond and Morning Call at City Park for beignets for the kids. And Robears snoballs almost every day.

Not as many nice dinners out, but lots of great great food and drink. The wife hit Mandina's one day for lunch with her friends and we made it to Haydel's bakery twice and Angelo Brocato's for cannolis.

Still my favorite city to visit in the world. My wife is from NO and is seriously trying to talk me into moving back.

Ok, so my wife and I decided we wanted to go back to NOLA after the awesome time we had last fall (thanks to everyone for the tips btw). So we just an email to friends and family saying we were going to be there over new years (12/29-1/2). All of a sudden there are 30 people joining us! That is awesome, but impossible to plan around. Anyway, I decided I just wanted to get everyone together for my wife's birthday on 12/30. Does anyone have a suggestion on a place in the FQ preferably that would be good for 30 people? 2/3 about 30 years old and 1/3 around 60. TIA

you talking about a sit down dinner, or just a place for all to gather? Where will everyone be staying?

People are staying throughout the FQ at different hotels. For the wife's birthday dinner, I'm looking for sit down, but if there are good options to gather for other nights, those places are needed as well.

If your looking for something super nice, when my company had an event down there they rented out a room at Commanders Palace for about 30 people. It was really nice and they did a pre fix tasting menu. Also gave us a tour of the kitchen which was kind of cool. That might be pricey though.

Whatever the case, book well in advance. When i have done bachelor parties for like 10-15 people it was tricky getting large reservations.

Offhand, I know Commanders, Mr. Bs, Emeril's NOLA, Red Fish Grill, and Palace Cafe all have rooms that can accommodate you (if they're available that night). All of these are quality places, and you shouldn't be disappointed.

ETA: Commanders isn't in the FQ

Sunday, we board the train at 2 so the goal is to grab a bite for brunch somewhere before cabbing over to Amtrak to board up. Cafe Amelie and Palace Cafe are on the radar currently.
NEver updated this...

We hit Dragos and got a glassed in private dining room next to the escalator that was perfect. The oysters were excellent and the meal itself was fantastic.

McClures was a huge hit with the group again as always. Then we made our way down magazine and hit a big sports bar for the saints game... I think it was called the bulldog? Someone in our group knew the owner well so we had a whole corner of the bar blocked off in front of a big projection screen and a covered pool table as a table. Next thing I know the owner dropped a ton of Popeyes and Gatorade on our table for our group because "that's what the saints eat pre-game". Good times.

MOVING FORWARD:

Coming in town in 2 weeks Wed 5th thru Sun 9th for a convention. Hitting NOLA Saturday Night.

Hitting McClures at some point during the week for dinner. Going to hit Dante's, Atchafaya or Cafe Amelie for brunch before heading out Sunday.

Anyone with some guidance for an area to target to rent a place for 4 nights via VRBO...outside the FQ? But close enough to easily get back and forth via trolley or on foot?

Garden District?

Garden District or Marigny. Marigny will be closer, but fewer availabilities

If you're planning on taking the streetcar and getting around, stay in GD. If you mainly want to walk to and back from the Quarter stay in Marigny.
