***Official New Orleans Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Great thread. Will have to give it a full read next time we're scheduled to head out that way.

Wife is from about 45 minutes west of New Orleans, closer to Baton Rouge.

We were married in the Garden District in 2007 and go back from time to time.

I'll be in Nola again on the weekend of 12/7 for the Saints/Panthers game. looking forward to some Tipsy BBQ. anybody in the area want to grab a drink that weekend let me know.

In NOLA today and may now be free this evening and there's a chance I get stuck here with nothing to do tomorrow eve. Gotta get to McClures somehow though I think it's closed Mon. Have to check.

I'm heading down to New Orleans in a couple weeks for a long weekend. Any locals who might be willing to help out a fellow FBG and his college buddies with some non-tobacco smoking product? If so shoot me a PM. Staying in the CBD but I'm happy to cab somewhere for pickup or meet at a bar or whatever.

I'll be in NOLA Mon-Fri of next week with a large group. For new years eve, is there anything we need to do? We were planning on bar hopping in the FQ. Any place that would be a good meeting point earlier in the night, maybe somewhere that won't be mobbed at 8pm in the FQ?

It's gonna be crazy everywhere b/c of regular NYE crowd + Sugar Bowl. I would probably suggest a hotel lobby bar as the meeting point b/c that will be the most flexible, largest space, etc...and then go from there.

Hotel Monteleone/Carousel Bar on Royal is generally a good meetup spot.

Man, went there during our trip in October. So jealous of those who had a kung fu like death grip on their seat the Carousel Bar. Very cool.

New Orleans. Where to stay/eat? Going with a pregnant person.
there's a whole new orleans thread. take a quick look, post your details and ask questions in there. i'll answer
 Headed back down there with the family in April for FQ Fest. You ever go to that? It lines up with the beginning of our spring break and works out great for us. I can take or leave most of the music, but getting to try so many different local dishes is the highlight of the week. Saturdays somehow keep getting more packed, but Sunday is a lot more chill.
FQF is great for this. How old are the kids?

I enjoy FQF more than Jazz Fest now, it's cheap, food's great, plenty of good beer at normal prices, seating for acts, lots of room to roam, very walkable, great stuff.

9 and 6. The youngest one is small for her age so she still rides in an umbrella stroller which works out well. They're not very adventurous eaters yet so they stick to pizza, snoballs, etc. so we all get what we want out of the deal. This will actually be our 4th year in a row of FQF & spring break in NOLA. LMK if you are out there this year on the weekend.

I see that Uber is in town now but not UberX. I also read that a local cab company was coming out with their own app - TaxiCabApp. Has anybody tried this yet?

Uber is generally taxi and black car in NOLA in my experience, and their coverage has been spotty at BEST (frequently NO cars on the road, even during peak times). This was 4-6 months ago, however.

it's horrible. waiting for the approval of "regular uber (whatever that is)"

Man - this thread was buried deep (and the search function sucks)

Anyway, making arrangements to go solo to NOLA Aug 14-15-16 and only agenda items are McClure's and NOLA Tap Room - although having read the first six pages of the thread, Cooter Browns looks like a winner too.

Would happily meet fellow FBGs over either bbq or cold beverages or both.

Thread was started awhile ago. When I get a chance I will update the first post. While cooters is good, it's probably not worth a specific trip in that direction unless you're in the area. What appealed to you about it, I might be able to point you in a better direction

It got good reviews from FBGs in general and seemingly has a large selection of craft beers. Looking at a map it is a bit further out than I had planned to go.

I'm likely going to stay at either Prince Conti Hotel, Prytania Oaks or Queen Anne (latter two in Garden District I believe), TBD next week. Not fussy, just need a shower, a/c and a bed in a convenient location

Not planning on a car, will use public transport/street car/cabs and potentially walking if it doesn't rain too much.

ETA: And thanks !

Coming in next weekend for w bachelor party. Hitting NOLA Taphouse to see Tipsy on Friday night.

Chartering a couple redfish boats Saturday morning, then leaning toward throwing some dice at Harrahs and getting some oysters over at dragos for dinner (open to other suggestions for solid spot in that area that's not TOO formal/pricy.

Sunday will be brunch (not sure on where yet) then rolling back to town.

Forget Cooter Brown's. If craft beer is your thing, the only stop you need to make is the Avenue Pub, which is just a block away from Prytania Oaks. And within walking distance from there is Stein's, a deli/bottle shop that's also the best in the city. Solid, solid area right there.

Just came here to say this.

It's also right by those hotels you mentioned. And note there is an upstairs with a balcony and its own selection, which you may not realize when you get there, it's actually open after 5 though.

Good info here. Avenue pub is tops in the city for beer

No oysters at Cochon unless I'm missing something. That's on the outskirts of what range we are wanting to walk in that direction. But biggest miss there are the chargrilled oysters (which the bachelor wants for certain).

No, Cochon isnt for oysters or seafood. You are good at Dragos there, or Acme or Felix's in the Quarter for oysters.

I will say that Casamentos is my all time favorite for oysters in NO. But they close for the summer so you will have to hit them up after Sept 15.

Can't believe I'm missing you in NO by two weeks...

Oh, well. I'll have to go to Memphis in May then ;)

There is a place I like for Charbroiled oysters at Grand Isle in harrahs complex across from Manning's. They have a superb one with havarti and jalapeño. I loved it. It is not the iconic well known ones but they were as good as I've had elsewhere in town

Grand Isle. Only been once, but it was pretty good

Bummer! Definitely should plan on MIM!

Uber is in NOLA now. Not sure if they are allowed to pick up at the airport. If so, they will be much cheaper than a cab

Just a few updates on my visit so far.

Staying at the Quality Inn Maison St. Charles and it is pretty nice. It's a budget option to be sure and not exactly in the center of things. But at the same time the St. Charles streetcar stops right outside the door so access to the French qtr is easy and my room at leat is very nice. WIFI works like a charm, a/c running fine, king bed and a shower. Who could ask for more?

I received the suggestion of going to the Avenue Pub on St. Charles and it is very nice, The beer selection (if you are in to craft beer) is excellent and the food options are very decently priced, I only tried the Hummus so far (and I'll have that again before I try anything else) but that is top notch. Sitting on the balcony smoking a New Orleans Cigar factory panatela was just icing on the cake.

On Tipsy's recommendation earlier in this thread I went to Parkway bakery for a fried shrimp Po-boy (also on obligation from a friend that is a former resident) but I'll have to say while it was nice it's not going to be a highlight of my trip. Cochon Butcher's chicken and andouille gumbo on the other hand is (and I recognize it is not a fair comparison).

I may never get the appeal of Bourbin street, but I am more than willing to give it another couple of gos on future visits. I may be too old for the whole drunk scene, but we'll see next time I visit

So far I have enjoyed my visit tremendously and I will definitely recommend others to come to this beautiful city

See if they have any Ghost in the Machine left on tap at Avenue Pub. It's a double IPA from a Brewery a few hours away that is excellent....it's getting all sorts of national love

Thanks, I'll take a look tonight. Off hand I think not, I've perused the list pretty hard the past couple of days ;)

yep, wouldn't be surprised if they sold out
That stuff sells out fast fast. Stein's will usually get the bottles. Both Bulldogs usually have it on tap too.

Yeah, me and some buddies were able to snag a bunch. Very good stuff

Awesome advice in here! Heading into town on Wed, game on Thurs against the Flacons and then on to Nashvillie for the Titans / Dolphins matchup. Apparently there is a Blues and BBq festival on in NO, so I will be getting my fix of BBQ.

Are Drago's and ACME still top spots for oysters? My wife is dying to try crawfish so any tips on the best places for that would be appreciated.
