You know what might be a good idea? For all of us (and some of us displaced) Saints fan to attempt to pick a game next year and attend that game. It would be great to attend a Saints game with a bunch of FBG bretheren(& SOs).

Dude. It is what it is. Your Sunday brunch is needed, my man. You are doing for the greater good.

Slave to my Sunday Brunch here. :hot:
What about a Sunday night game then? We start by attending Dante's, then tipsy gets to join us???

Timely bump--I'm heading down there today. :excited:
What are your plans while in town?
Well originally, they included a trip to Dante's on Saturday night, but we had to cancel that because of the timing of some other things we're doing (couldn't make it up there and back in time to enjoy our meal). :own3d: I don't feel quite as bad since I unknowingly went there the last time I visited--my favorite meal when I was here and every bit as good as everyone says! :thumbup:Last night we got in and had to go to some god-awful show that a friend of my boyfriend is associated with. Then we went over to Frenchmen Street--d.b.a. and now I'm forgetting the name of the other place. Today my mom and stepfather arrive--we're going to Johnny's for po' boys and then wandering around the French Quarter until we go on this cocktail tour at 4 pm. That's over at 6:30, then dinner, then going to Preservation Hall--I happened to catch those guys at Bonnaroo a few years ago and know my mom will love it. Probably stop by the Carousel Bar for a drink before letting my mom head back. Bf and I will stay out later. :)Tomorrow we're doing Cafe du Monde in the morning, Commander's Palace for lunch, St. Charles streetcar, Garden District, Magazine Street...then finding a place to watch the Super Bowl based on some recommendations people gave me earlier in this thread. Monday we'll have breakfast at Cafe Adelaide and then head home. :(Believe it or not, my 65-year-old mom has never been to New Orleans, so I'm trying to fit in a bit of the touristy stuff for her.

Freaking phenomenal dinner at Dante's tonight. Will post a better update in the morning....but exceeded expectations on all levels

Some of my more favorite restaurants:

August - pricy and very good, my favorite from a bunch a great restaurants (close to Harrah's)

Bayona - Susan Spicer deal, if you really want a great Quarter eating experience forget Two Sisters and that kind of yuk, this place feels like another country with fantastic food, maybe my 2nd favorite (very cool take on pb&j - has cashew butter, thinly sliced red onions with sherry, smoked duck, jalapeno jelly, and apple-celery minced) (in the middle of the Quarter)

Bacco - Brennan italian place in the Quarter, get the lobster ravioli (Quarter)

K Paul's - best blackened fish in town - huge and melt in your mouth, great jalapeno martinis too (Quarter)

NOLA - another one of Emeril's, great creative combos (Quarter)

Commanders Palace - classic classy dining, you gotta go and do the tasting menu - some think too prententious, they are probably right, but its still pretty cool and great food (Uptown)

GW Fins - love the sea bass in spicy asian broth, get them to pan sear it crunchy on the top side before putting into the broth (Quarter)

Clancys - great place populated by mostly townies - old time understated class my boss who lives there loves it (Garden District)

Starts with a B - can't remember the name!!! (and it doesn't seem to be listed in the yellow pages). New tapas place where Lemongrass used to be close to the JW Marriott - great place, I could eat the whole menu - fantastic serrano ham, tuna carpaccio, and my favorite - bacon wrapped dates stuffed with almond and blue cheese

Rambla? Theyopened up not to long ago (from the Cuvee folks). Do you eat out every night or something and have we met?

Wow, I don't think of Commander's as pretentious at all. In my massive experience (OK, I've only been there three times) I thought the service was friendly and the servers as well as the musicians were perfectly down-to-earth. Being attentive and good at your job shouldn't equal pretentiousness.A place we went in my recent trip that I had never been before was Louisiana Bistro (in the Quarter). Only complaint is that their wine list leaves a whole lot to be desired.

By the way, also highly recommend the Cocktail tour. We had a great time on that and learned about a lot of new cocktails we hadn't had before.

Didn't get around to writing this morning....but just polished off my leftovers :excited: So Mrs. TF and I have been for brunch before, but never for dinner. As I've written before, I've never heard a bad thing abut the place, but obviously needed to experience it first hand.....so we waited for a special occasion (sold our house) to splurge.

Appetizers

Grilled Gulf Shrimp and Stone Ground Grits with an andouille red eye gravy

Prince Edward Island Mussles in a beer and stilton cheese broth

Going into it, the only thing I knew I was getting was the Grits, everything else was up for grabs. 3 very large shrimp...and the entire app was great. As for the mussles, I don't think I've ever ordered mussles at a restaurant before, and I've never really been a fan, but I was feeling adventurous. They were great and very plentiful. I think Typsy mentioned that they changed the sauce up a bit, but whatever it was...was good!

Entree

Bell & Evan’s Chicken Roasted Under a Brick maple glazed, with a potato and bacon hash cake, topped with a fried farm egg

Trois Mignons three petite beef tenderloin filets served on caramelized onion mashed potatoes and topped with pork debris, Stilton cheese sauce and marchand du vin

We had a hard time deciding on the 2nd entree (we were splitting everything). The Mignons were pretty much a slam dunk....and finally decided on the chicken, which was different for us b/c we typically never order chicken in a restaurant b/c we eat it alot at home. Well they were both excellent. I am not a steak person at all (I like it, but I don't think it's amazing like many) but this steak was very good. And the maple glaze on the chicken was solid

Sides

barq’s root beer candied sweet potatoes

We were both way to full to really give these a fair shot yesterday, but I just had them cold as a leftover and they didn't disappoint.

Dessert

Stawberry Shortcake

Wow - could tell that the cake was fresh....extremely moist and was delicious

All in all - like I said, exceeded expectations. Waitress was hot and Tipsy had the Pearl Jam station on Pandora going til the Chef said he had enough :banned:

Chef hates Pearl Jam. His former partner listened to them daily at Dante's. I knew as soon as he heard it he would 86 it. I still cannot believe you were drinking Metropolitans all night. :limpwrist: How did you score that wife again?

A place we went in my recent trip that I had never been before was Louisiana Bistro (in the Quarter). It was the top-rated restaurant on tripadvisor so we tried it. They have a "Feed Me" menu you can do for 3, 4, or 5 courses in which the chef will come out and ask about your preferences/allergies, etc. (one of his questions was, "Are you scared of anything?" which I thought was funny), then prepare the meal on that basis. It was fantastic and about a million times better than Jacques-Imo, which everyone had been raving about. Just a small place in the Quarter, nothing too fancy, but incredible food and great service. Krista, thanks for this as I hope to try this out the next time I am in New Orleans.I am unfamiliar with the bolded portions. Would you please share any info you have?

Tripadvisor is just tripadvisor.com--it's kind of a bible for me when traveling. Hotel and restaurant ratings, and especially the forums are very active and helpful. Here's a link to the cocktail tour.

Best breakfast in town -- Elizabeth's

http://www.elizabeths-restaurant.com/
That is a strong statement for a city filled with good breakfast/brunch spots.
Yes, it is a strong statement. After living there for a few years and having been to just about all of them, Elizabeth's was the place that was at the top of our list any time we wanted a weekend breakfast. Saturday mornings are the best with their brunch menu. For some reason, it's not even a place known by a lot of locals but the food is amazing, the prices are reasonable, and the portions are generous. The praline bacon is a must try. If you get there around 9 on a Saturday morning, usually little to no wait at all. Once ~10am hits, you could be waiting 30-45 minutes to sit.

I must get out there for brunch then....i love what praline bacon sounds like. Speaking of...one of my favorite snacks is going to Camilla Grill and getting a slice of pecan pie and side of bacon. They think i am a weirdo, but bacon and pie is like heaven.

I agree. Tipsy, are you familiar with this place?
Sure...I have heard of it, but seldom do I ever get to go to brunch (ask the 450 people i fed brunch last weekend) as a leisure thing. Plus if I am going to the bywater side of town, it is usually on a mission of BBQ.

Whenever we had people come and visit from out of town, that was the place we always took them and we were NEVER disappointed. They vary the menu from time to time so some things come and go periodically. I will say that I've actually only been there for brunch so I don't know what regular breakfast and lunch/dinner menus are like. From the current brunch menu they have listed here, I recommend:Appetizers:

Praline bacon

Callas

Drunken Bananas

Breakfast:

Eggs Elizabeth

Shrimp and Grits

Strawberries and cream french toast (probably my favorite. If going with a group of like 3-4, I recommend getting an order to split with everyone)

Redneck Eggs

Currently not on the menu but the dish I always ordered when they had it was an Oyster and Eggs Florentine. It was a mixture of homestyle potatoes with onions, eggs, fried oysters, and spinach all mixed together. Absolutely amazing.

I will say that it seems the prices have gone up some as in the past most of these dishes were around $8-10. But, at those previous prices, the food was a steal. Even at the listed prices, it's still very reasonable for what you get.

Since leaving New Orleans almost a year ago, Elizabeth's is easily one of the places I miss the most.

Oh, another good little lunch place that is newer.

Ignatius Cafe on Magazine St. Delicious roast beef po-boys and shrimp remoulade (both warm and cold). Classic New Orleans fare.

I've heard very good things about Elizabeth's. Wife has been for lunch, but neither of us have hit up brunch yet....it's on our short list

It should be #1 on that list. Let me know what you think when you go (shoot me a PM). I guarantee you'll be hooked

Heading down for the Jets game Oct. 4. Will be going with about 7 other guys (most of them Jet fans) and will be there from the 2nd to the 5th. Trying to set up accommodations and best price seems to be at Best Western St. Christopher. Any advice one way or another on this hotel?

It's no frills, but still in a good location. You're a 5 minute walk from the french quarter and Harrah's. You're about a 15 minute walk to the Dome, which shouldn't be an issue, b/c you can walk anywhere with an open container in NOLA. If you're just going for a guys trip and looking to max your $ on booze, gambling, etc....it'll do what you're looking for.

:coffee: Thanks for the reply. Still checking out all options, but max $ on other things will probably be priority for 2/3 of the group. ETA: They had a townhouse reserved on the corner of North Rampart and St. Philip St., but I didn't think it was such a great location.

You're closer to the French Quarter at that location, but it's not safer. Not that it's "not safe" b/c with 8 dudes, you'll be fine. But one guy goes for a drunken wander across rampart and you'll run into some serious sketchiness. The St. Christopher will be fine. Also, with that many people (assuming you all arrive on the same flight), you might want to look into a private car service. If you look at the first post in the thread, you're located in the CBD, so you're in walking distance from some great lunch spots.

Thanks again for the quick reply. I'll probably ask for more advice when it gets closer. Knowing this group, probably half of them will only be looking for boozing/gambling/etc. The other half of us are going to be more about getting the flavor of the city food/entertainment/sights.

Happy Jazz Fest everyone!

:(

Tonight is the first official night of jazz fest crowds coming in. My reservations sheets look....well....full. I can tell by the advance bookings this will be our busiest two weeks ever. And based on the amount of cucumber gin I have infused I should be....well....tipsy.

One of the best areas of town to live imho. I spent my college and beyond years in that general area. You are close to all the bars & restaurants in all of uptown honestly. Magazine is loaded with stuff from Louisiana to Henry Clay. Milan lounge on Milan & Prytania was my favorite dive in that immediate area. Delachaise for late night bevs & apps.Up the street on Prytania...... Kyoto is one of my favorite sushi places uptown. St. James cheese company is a great spot for a cheese/pate lunch. Don't forget about my boy at the Kingpin bar right there. Le Crepe Nanou is also in that block....get the mussels. Go down to magazine from their for Le Bon Temp Rouler which has great music from time to time.

Cool deal.Never really spent much time in that area. Either I was roaming about the Quarter or somewhere uptown. My place is actually on Prytania, which rocks because initally I won't have a vehicle and will be working nights on Bourbon. Figured it was time to have a little more excitement in my life.

What bar on bourbon?

FYI, if you are north of the lake, there is a restaurant in Slidell that is awesome. Not quite, Dante's Kitchen, but let's face it, what is?

The name of the restaurant is Nathan's. The chef worked a long time at Galatoire's restaurant, a well-known old line New Orleans restaurant.

Gonna be helping out at the bar at several different clubs, all having nudity as the common denominator.

Since we play kickball at Audobon every Thursday, we've been eating at Cooter Browns recently and I've had two things there that I've never seen on any menu in New Orleans before:

1 - Meat Pie po boy - cajun meat pies on french bread with some gravy and provolone cheese

2 - Grilled shrimp po boy - huge grilled shrimp with red/green peppers and pepper jack cheese

Both were excellent

These're absolute dynamite. If somebody would find a way to make a crawfish pie po-boy happen...
