***Official New Orleans Thread*** (1 Viewer)

I've heard otherwise from my friends at work. Stories of gunshots going off and the ensuing stampedes everywhere. I'm not really liking the idea of every low-life thug in a 100-mile radius coming out for the weekend.
This festival is generally sporting a Peace theme or Stop the Violence. Gunshots are heard in the quarter all the time (sadly) and that weekend is no different. But it is probably safer down there for huge events like this than most "parties" in the country. The police in this city can control a crowd better than anyone. Now tipping....that is another story next weekend.
Yeah, I wasn't speaking of the festival itself, but of the aftermath out in the quarter. Wonder if Rick's Cabaret is gonna be closed for "renovations" again. That seems to be a popular theme around this time. And I'm not expecting much tips, which is pathetic for what should be a good weekend (4th of July and all).

I'll be honest with you, Tiger: you are dealing with someone who has zero experience in "renting balconies" (or New Orleans) but is more than a little open to the idea. We're not millionaires, but we'll have a few dollars to spend. It's gonna be me plus 5 buddies. We're all in our mid-to-late 20s. Our primary interest is in seeing naked girls and/or having relations with naked girls.Guide me, please.
man now you got me thinking about new years in NOLA!

Taken from the first post, here's my nola nightlife summary....first and foremost, your drunkest, easiest targets are gonna be at the places on bourbon street...if you want to increase the quality, and try to nab a local, see what I bolded below: where you can pretty much guarantee good quality trimETA: Been married 6 years (I'm 30), but the wife and I still go out alot, and the bolded is definitely a fair assessment.

Nightlife

• Obviously, you can walk up and down Bourbon St. until you find the bar/club that suits you’re needs…but that may get old depending on how long you’re staying…..so I’ll throw out a few suggestions

• Gold Mine – this is a few blocks off of Bourbon and is where a lot of locals go late night (after weddings, etc). You want good looking young chicks that have been drinking all night; this is a good place to start. Very collegey atmosphere (cheap drinks and booty music)

• Red Eye – this is in the Warehouse District, but again a lot of locals hang out here. Typically a little younger crowd (21-26) average IMO and again collegy

• FnM’s – for the ultra late night crowd. You’ll find those who are 21-40 here for late night dancing/drinking. Typically there isn’t a sober person in the bar. Definitely take a cab here, as you wouldn’t want to be driving down there unless you know exactly where you’re going. Get the cheese fries

• Tipatina’s – good live music here…need to take a cab from downtown….right across the st. from **** and Jenny’s (above)

• House of Blues – in the quarter – can view they’re schedule online

• Tons of other holes in the wall where you can just walk in and grab a drink and listen to some jazz or whatever

• Piano Bar – Pat O’Briens. Fun time with a big group

I need to get to FnM's also some year I need to party with Tiger Fan one night

The FnM's late night college crowd isn't typically the hottest group, but they're not bad and damn, they're down to ####.

If you're even mildly make the effort, you'll get some. I've gone there stoned as a mother, barely able to move and still had some prospects.

I can't hang like I used to...lucky if i make it there once a year......i'm typically hungover for 2 days after a bender like those

Anniversary weekend, and we typically stay in the quarter/uptown to celebrate.....ate our asses off:

Friday: Lunch @ Cafe Rani on Mag, Dinner @ Stella

Saturday: Lunch @ Nola, dinner @ Ugly Dog (was there for a private party)

Sunday: Brunch @ Ruby Slipper

Cafe Rani

Solid place as always, had the sushimi (sp?) tuna as app, and then the oriental salad

Stella

Good food, though I thought it was a tad pricey.....got the Lobster Risotta app, and had the Duck 5 ways....wife had the beef tenderloin.....dessert was excellent - Bananas Foster French Toast with vanilla ice cream.

NOLA

Very solid lunch, possibly the best (nice) lunch I've ever had. The stuffed fried chicken wings were increadible, and we split 2 entrees - pulled pork panini and garlic crusted redfish

Ruby Slipper

Very cool little brunch place in mid-city that everyone had been talking about. I was hungover, so I wasn't that into it, but it was tasty....Shrimp and Grits were good, but they were a little too creamy.

I'm going to sleep for 3 days now

My last time at F&M's ended when a friend got shot 7 times.....because he gave them directions.

NOTE: It was extremely random, but kind of left a bad taste in my mouth and have never wanted to go there again. Luckily my friend survived.

Had a friend pistol whipped there on the way back to the car

that sounds delicious! what were they stuffed with? i will definitely have to check this place out.

finally i get to come back to NOLA for work! cant wait to visit Dante's!!!
Meh....its overrated. The guy at the desk is a real jerk.
Tipsy - where did your restaurant experience come from again? I know you told me once, but I forgot......
I started working private diner parties for my moms friends when I was 12. She opened a restaurant in Pensacola when I was 13 and I've basically been doing this crap since then. Dante's is my 12th restaurant, but only my 3rd one since turning 19. 7 years here, 5 at a place in oregon, and 5 at Figaro's on maple when it first opened.

ground shrimp, onions, peppers and celery (i think)

By the way...I have a new mojito. Blackberry infused rum, with fresh blueberries in the muddling. We call it the black & blue mojito, or the Ike Turner.

Gotcha

For ultra late night....try snake & jakes on Oak & Hillary. And by late night, I mean like 5 am.
The bartenders' bar....only made it there once, and suffice to say, I don't remember it
It is where the "bar straw incident" happened with my ex-partner. Sweet poker action on Sunday nights too.
:jawdrop:
Watch out for your #### there. I always get so hammered there I pass out on one of the couches. Usually to find out that there are strangers sitting beside me on both sides.$1 Schlitz hurts in the morning, but damn I can put those suckers away.

Still never managed to make it out to that place. Everybody I know seems to have an awesome story about a night or two out there.

So were you part of that big gang that walks around fanning their faces with the spooky cardboard monster on a stick?

Just stumbled into Kingpin to beat the rain. To my surprise, there's a full-sized, proper shuffleboard table up innis place.

I may have found my new hangout.

I've read your restaurant list, and you left out Liuzza's on Bienville. Everyone forgets about Liuzza's. Frosty mugs and really great sanwhiches.

Didn't we meet up randomly/unexpectedly here one night? I'm just now reading this and seeing it was posted in 2007, I might have asked this question already in this very thread.Goldmine was THE bar I spent '94/'95 in when I visited New Orleans. Being 18 at the time, Flaming Dr. Peppers became my love. We were probably here, driving over from Mobile, 2 weekends out of ever month considering the drinking age was 18 still at that time. The drinking age went up over the summer, but by then, we knew enough bar owners and bouncers in New Orleans, it really didn't matter.

Friend of mine owns that place. How did I not steer you down that way considering where you live?

I think we concluded in chat that we were both there at the same time the previous weekend, but didn't realize it

You did mention that in the neighborhood bar listing you gave me, I believe. But with Ms. Mae's being so close, I usually don't have a reason to venture on out too far. Been looking for a shuffleboard table around these parts, and I'll be visiting Kingpin a lot more often.

Just took 5 minutes to figure out 'buhhwire' = Budweiser.

Any specific stories, gadabout? Sounds like the old Freaknik days in Atlanta.

We had to shut our doors to the club about five times last night due to stampedes from either fireworks, gunfire, and brandished weapons. I'm talkin bout not even having enough time to lock the door, a bunch of us having to push people out, punching the hell outta their arms and all that stuff. My favorite moment:I was going to relieve one of our bartenders for a break out in one of the alleys he sets up shop in. As I was making my way towards him, a loud, piercing CRACK went off right in front of the beer stand. Followed by another one. To me, it sounded like a low caliber pistol being fired. Anyways. That set it off. Keep in mind that at this time (maybe 1:30am or so) the streets are packed with lotsa shady looking folks, posting up along walls and the curb. Once I heard the bangs I ducked behind a wall of kegs in the alley, and I could see the bartender get up and try to stop the oncoming stampede from running down our alley. Next thing I know, he's spraying some FOX pepper spray (fogger) in left-to-right, long sweeping motions. That stops every single person in their tracks. People are gagging, choking, falling to their knees right in front of the bar. One dood is even throwing that nasty, glowing gutter water into his eyes. After realizing what the hell just went down, retaliation towards the bartender crossed my mind. I booked it back up the alley and went inside. Nasty, nasty crowd out there this weekend.
