Just took 5 minutes to figure out 'buhhwire' = Budweiser. :X

Any specific stories, gadabout? Sounds like the old Freaknik days in Atlanta.
We had to shut our doors to the club about five times last night due to stampedes from either fireworks, gunfire, and brandished weapons. I'm talkin bout not even having enough time to lock the door, a bunch of us having to push people out, punching the hell outta their arms and all that stuff. My favorite moment:

I was going to relieve one of our bartenders for a break out in one of the alleys he sets up shop in. As I was making my way towards him, a loud, piercing CRACK went off right in front of the beer stand. Followed by another one. To me, it sounded like a low caliber pistol being fired. Anyways. That set it off. Keep in mind that at this time (maybe 1:30am or so) the streets are packed with lotsa shady looking folks, posting up along walls and the curb. Once I heard the bangs I ducked behind a wall of kegs in the alley, and I could see the bartender get up and try to stop the oncoming stampede from running down our alley. Next thing I know, he's spraying some FOX pepper spray (fogger) in left-to-right, long sweeping motions. That stops every single person in their tracks. People are gagging, choking, falling to their knees right in front of the bar. One dood is even throwing that nasty, glowing gutter water into his eyes. After realizing what the hell just went down, retaliation towards the bartender crossed my mind. I booked it back up the alley and went inside.

Nasty, nasty crowd out there this weekend.
I think I'd rather get shot

:lmao: at the overreaction to people most likely lighting fireworks!

I can't think of a more disgusting liquid on this planet than that stuff. Just stepping in it is enough to ruin your whole weekend.

The only reported shootings and stabbings reported this weekend where no where near the French Quarter fwiw.
Good stuff. Though I can't really imagine the benefit of "reporting" a shooting in the Quarter during Essence Fest.Double murder (again) in Iberville last night. What're they gonna do with that place???

Since we play kickball at Audobon every Thursday
Saw an ad about a kickball league the other day that plays at Audobon. Y'all season starting next week?

You may be right. I've found my new stalking grounds.

So the Gold Mine is a good place to find hot trim? Staying at Bourbon Orleans tomorrow night before going over to the Sheraton with the rest of the wedding party on Friday. Where is this place from Bourbon Orleans?

Thanks,

Mud

Thursday night probably not....Friday/Saturday, definitely.....but only go after midnight. If you want to stay going out in the Quarter on Thursday nights, I would just walk around and find the crowd that suits you. Pat Obriens is typically a good place to start. Magazine St (uptown, you'll need to cab it from the quarter) should be a pretty solid Thursday night.....any one of Rendevoux, Bulldog, Balcony, St. Joe's should all be good crowds.Never really go to the Marigny during the week, so I can't comment on that...maybe someone else/

Anybody know the most bicycle-friendly route from uptown to the Saints' facility on Airline?

Ain't got a car and I seem to be coming down with a case of Saints fever.

From uptown? St. Charles to Leake....and just ride the levee until you hit Hickory, then take that up to Airline.11miles each way

Whatcha think about this one?Punched in "walking" instead of "by car."

This one here.

No short with long arms I figured.

FYI: On my way to the coffee shop today, I noticed that Judyth Vary Baker's old house on Marengo is for rent.

Also, found an apartment a block or so away from Kingpin's. Shuffleboard domination on the horizon.

Staying at Hilton New Orleans Riverside for the next week, buddy of mine told me to go to Roddy Maravich's place for sure. I was told I'm staying next door to Harrah's in the French Quarter.

I'll read through this thread, but any do's/don'ts about this area?

Never heard of Roddy Maravich's.....google turns up nothing relevant (unless I completely whiffed).I wouldn't eat at Mulate's (tourist trap near the convention center). You'll find the rest of the info in the thread

Thanks--Roddy is just a bartender at one of the local bars I think.

Sort of NOLA info.

The best fried catfish on the planet is about 45 minutes away from here on the western side of the lake.

MIDDENDORF'S in Manchac.

Years and years of hearing the hype. Finally made the drive out. Un-freaking-real how good their stuff was. Best catfish and even the fried shrimp we had were at the top of my list. I will figure out how the hell they do that. Super thin filets. Golden yellow crispy crust. Not over seasoned.

Totally worth the drive for lunch. Bring your big boy pants.

I live in the Baton Rouge area, but grew up in St. Bernard. I love catfish and can not find a place that is anything like crispy catfish in da parish before the storm. Where is this place? West side of lake pontchartrain? Is it a hole in the wall or a nicer place?

Manchac is about 10 miles south of Ponchatoula. Come down I-12 to Hammond, go south on I-55. Not a hole in the wall, but not fancy either.I've eaten catfish from Violet to Natchitoches and trust me....nobody does it better.

#1 Go to a place called Herb Import on St. Peter Street between Bourbon/Royal. Buy some stuff called Mojo.

Heading to Hammond tonight, so I will be eating there. Besides the catfish, anything I must have?

Iron bars are going up and lotsa businesses have signs hanging on the door saying they'll be closed till Sunday.

Must be Bayou Classic weekend.

Hogwash. Name 3 that are shuttered.
One of the clubs I work at is having iron bars put over the windows. Cruise by the entrance to the Sonesta and check out the iron gates that have out there. The Alibi is closed till Sunday. Pretty sure it's the same for Rick's.

Going in January for first time; anniversary trip with the wifey. Saints will likely be hosting a game that weekend too (possibly Cards?), so I want to book hotel now.

Trying to decide between:

Le Richelieu

Place D'Armes

Prince Conti

Omni Royal Orleans

Royal Sonesta looks good, but it's about double the rate of the others.

If they're all the same price range....I'd go with the Omni...it's right smack dab in the middle of everything.

Alrighty,

Comin down next weekend with a buddy (who's never been to NOLA) for a couple days. We're arriving 3pm Saturday via the City of New Orleans train (for kicks) and departing Monday at 1pm via the train as well. Staying at the Crowne Plaza Astor at the head of Bourbon (@ Canal).

1) BOURBON NIGHTLIFE:

What's the nightlife like in the quarter these days. It's been a year since i've been down and last year around this time (late dec) you really had to hunt around for bars that had a decent crowd. Looking for suggestions for decent spots on bourbon these days. My buddy is single so looking for best 20-30 something crowds. Not huge into clubs but will hit that scene if needed. We'll be hitting the Dungeon just because my buddy's a meathead and loves metal so that place will be entertaining for an hour or so (unless people are ####### in cages in the skull room again). Shot Gadabout a PM about where he's working these days.

2) OFF BOURBON NIGHTLIFE:

I'm aware of the Goldmine but open to other "off bourbon" suggestions of that type. Always have a blast in there. Basically fun bars with good pickup/social scenes. I'll be flying as wingman only but everyone loves eyecandy.

3) SAINTS GAME

We're not going to the game but are considering heading over to the stadium before hand (noon kickoff vs TB) and was wondering how the tailgating is around the stadium. Is the quarter the place to be pregame or should we head over there? Where's the best bars to watch the games (looking for jam packed rowdy/fun scene). Suggestions for postgame festivities? I was going to talk to TigerFan and Tipsy about any pregame festivities they had going on as well (I know Tipsy went to the last game).

4) FOOD

Looking for good/cheap oysters around the quarter. Also suggestions about proper reasonable eats. I know of the standbys (Mothers) but hoping for other suggestions.

Thanks in advance guys.

1. With Bourbon, there's pretty much a little bit of everything......I can't really make a suggestion, b/c typically when we're down there, we just walk and see what happens...since it's your buddy's first time, just let him make a few decisions, and you can always move along if nothing is happening.2. If you've never been to Frenchman street before, I would suggest that...basically, you just walk straight down Bourbon and pass Esplanade....for the past few years, people have been referring to it as the "local's bourbon street" since Bourbon has become pretty commercialized. There's a good mix of people/bars there, so you can walk along and see if anything is your cup of tea, and if not, always head back to the quarter area. Gold mine is still the place where all the locals go late night to dance.

3. Tailgating for a noon game is decent, but not really a college atomosphere, typically just people in parking lots...plus, since it's a noon kickoff, you may want to stay around where the bars are (not too many directly by the dome). Usually, we tailgate at Handsome Willy's, which is a cool little dive bar that makes good drinks. Not much seating, but b/w that place and a pizza place next door, you'll at least be able to watch teh saints game. Many places in the quarter have 3 for 1 drinks all day (Razoos, BBC, Bourbon Rocks) and they will be showing the game IIRC. But they aren't sports bars per say (if you wanted to watch other games). To be honest, I'm not sure of any around there that wouldn't have the Saints game on every TV. Only two that might would be Checkered Parrot (typical sports bar) and Gordon Biersch (brew pub type place)

4. www.lukeneworleans.com - this is one of my favorite restaurants. From 4-6 they have $.25 oysters and 1/2 price drinks. I've never had teh oysters from there, but my buddy has, and he said they were good. Here's a recent review:

They now have an excellent happy hour from 4 to 6 where oysters are a quarter and most drinks are half-price. This brings them down to what I would consider a normal price, i.e., I had a glass of beer that was normally $7.50 for $3.25. So if you're in the neighborhood you could definitely pop in just for beer and oysters. Or if you were with someone you could split the 3-course express menu ($23), which is good and more than enough to feed two people.
Other place in the quarter I recommend is Johnny's po boys - much better than Mother's IMO.

Man, I have no idea what it's like the day after Christmas. I know the postgame show with Bobby Hebert is at Deanie's Seafood. One of my favorite places to eat. Acme Oyster house menu

Drago's has famous charbroiled oysters if you are not into the raw stuff. Very good.

My favorite is Oyster's Rockefeller, but Rockefeller's is in Ponchatoula. I think Brennan's does them as well, but you'll pay a lot. Don't know where else to find them.

Thanks.

Have been to Acme, Felix's, Royal and a couple others. Seems $10/dozen raw (how I like em) is the standard. Not a problem just wondering if there are any hidden "deals".

Thanks for the heads up on the Halbert show at deanie's. :pics:
